METHODS: Participants were 82 children ranging from 8 to 10 years of age, in their third and fourth year of four public Primary Schools in the city of Santa Maria (RS), Brazil. The sample was divided into two groups - exposed and not exposed to sound levels over 80 dB(A). Visual inspection of the external auditory canal, tonal audiometry thresholds, speech recognition tests and acoustic immittance measures were used to select the sample. A Likert scale model questionnaire was applied in order to research the level of acoustic comfort. We also performed acoustic measurements in the classrooms using a dosimeter. Statistical analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The mean acoustic level in each classroom varied from 51.9 dB(A) to 114 dB(A). From the total sample of 82 children, 20.7% were exposed to sound levels greater than 80 dB(A). Discomfort was referred by 46.3% of the total sample, hitting its highest level (51.3%) on the question of whether or not noise disturbs reading and writing processes. The attitude of comfort was predominant regarding speech intelligibility. As for reading and writing difficulties, discomfort was mostly indicated among subjects. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive study regarding the actions carried out with bottle feeding infants from a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who had received speech-language therapy. From the 11 participants, nine were preterm, adequate for gestational age, between 27 and 35 weeks; two were born full-term, one big and one adequate for gestational age, respectively with diagnoses of leucomalacia and jejunal atresia. The following variables were analyzed: mode of feeding, bottle container, bottle nipple, speech-language pathology evaluation and treatment in the first two therapy sessions. RESULTS: In the first assessment, all infants were using bottles containers and nipples randomly selected by their mothers. In the second assessment, most of the utensils followed the recommendation, but the wrong body position and the signs of discomfort persisted. Mothers were oriented a second time regarding feeding mode. Statistical analysis confirmed that speech-language evaluation and treatment significantly affected the decision of mothers to replace utensils, resulting in reduction of signs of discomfort. {"title":"Questionário sobre dificuldades comunicativas percebidas por pais de crianças do espectro do autismo","authors":"Juliana Izidro Balestro, F. Fernandes","doi":"10.1590/S1516-80342012000300008","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1590/S1516-80342012000300008","url":null,"abstract":"PURPOSE: To develop a questionnaire to the assessment of communicative difficulties perceived by parents and/or caregivers of children on the autism spectrum in relation to their children. METHODS: The specific aspects addressed by the questionnaire derived from the literature and from the author's clinical experience in specialized services. The questions were organized according to different domains and responses registered on a Likert-type scale. It was performed a pilot study with 40 parents, 20 parents of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and 20 parents of children without complaints of language as a way to verify the applicability of the questionnaire construction and their usefulness in identifying the specific difficulties of the target population. Was calculated the level of agreement of the issues and the results of the groups were compared (Student T Test). RESULTS: The questionnaire was developed in order to cover the fundamental aspects of interpersonal relationships, both within the communicative and social domains. It was divided into 24 multiple choice questions covering four areas and an open question, with space to parents report something they consider important and that has not been asked. The study allowed testing the understanding of the instrument and the statistical analysis indicated that 19 questions showed difference. CONCLUSION: The questionnaire identified differences in perception and attitude of parents of children with autism spectrum disorders and children without complaints of language in relation to communication difficulties with their children. METHODS: Participants were 11 children with typical phonological development and five children with phonological disorder and difficulty to establish the distinctive feature [+voice] of plosives. Through words (['papa], ['baba], ['tata], ['dada], ['kaka] and ['gaga]) inserted into carrier phrases, we measured voice onset time, vowel length, burst amplitude, and occlusion length of each plosive. The acoustic parameters of voiceless and voiced plosives were compared between and within groups through statistical analysis. RESULTS: The subjects within typical phonological development presented significant results mainly in distinguishing the parameters voice onset time, vowel length, and occlusion of voiceless and voiced stops, which was different from what was observed for children with phonological disorder. The comparison between groups showed differences related to the production of voice onset time and the occlusion length of voiced plosives. Regarding the other analyzed parameters, the values were similar between groups, with no statistical differences. Ancorado na perspectiva bakhtiniana e fundamentado na pesquisa qualitativa de cunho sociohistorico, este estudo privilegiou uma leitura dialogica do espaco interlocutivo. Assim, os dados coletados nas falas de duas maes de criancas surdas (que optaram pelo implante coclear), durante uma entrevista semi-estruturada, perfaz o material de estudo sobre a atividade enunciativo-discursiva envolvida no ato da fala. Nesse sentido, a fala das maes durante a entrevista demonstrou uma linguagem ativamente responsiva e dialogica, que ultrapassa os codigos prontos e os papeis estaticos da linguistica formal. Diante disso, percebe-se que a linguagem nao e somente uma comunicacao falante-ouvinte em seus papeis estaticos, mas uma unidade recheada de conteudo valorativo sociohistoricamente contextualizado. Contudo, diferentemente das falas das maes durante as entrevistas, a visao de linguagem que prevalece em sua comunicacao com os filhos, parece apontar preferencialmente a uma visao que privilegia a palavra oralisada, mesmo que isolada ou solta diante das situacoes interativas%%%%Considering the importance of mothers participation on the constitution of a deaf child, this research aims to analyze the discourse of deaf childrens mothers, in their quotidian communication with their children, observing their narratives from a point of view of the living word as an action of language. Grounded on the bakhtinian perspective theory and on the qualitative study of a socio-historical nature, this study privileges a dialogic reading of an interlocution site. So, the data collected from the discourses of two mothers of deaf children (with cochlear implantation) during a semistructured interview encompasses the study material about the enunciative discursive activity involved in the act of speech. Therefore, the mothers speeches during the interview showed an actively dialogic responsive language, which goes beyond the ready codes and static roles of formal linguistics. It can be perceptible that language must not be only speaker-listener communication in their static roles, but an axiological socio-historical contextualized subject matter. METHODS: Participants were 15 subjects aged between 5 and 7 years and 11 months, diagnosed as phonologically disordered. The PCC-R index was calculated for both words imitation and picture naming tasks, separately. The need to apply stimulability test was considered according to the criteria proposed in previous research for Brazilian Portuguese-speaking children. Speech inconsistency allowed the classification of subjects as either consistent or inconsistent. Data were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Comparison between PCC-R calculated for picture naming and words imitation tasks demonstrated difference only for the need for the application of the stimulability test. Such difference was not observed in the speech inconsistency test. No difference was found at PCC-R values considering both familial and otitis media histories. CONCLUSION: The present research indicates that children who were submitted to the stimulability test presented lower values of PCC-R. METODOS: Trata-se de estudo observacional transversal com aplicacao de questionario a 85 agentes comunitarios. Foram investigadas 20 situacoes hipoteticas abordando os temas fonoaudiologicos na rotina de trabalho dos agentes. As variaveis analisadas foram: idade, tempo de atuacao, escolaridade, percepcao dos riscos a saude da populacao nas areas de voz, motricidade orofacial, linguagem e audiologia. RESULTADOS: A media de idade dos agentes foi de 38 anos (±9,1), e o tempo de medio de atuacao no programa 5,0 anos (±2,9). Observou-se que 80 profissionais (94%) possuiam pelo menos o Ensino Medio completo, e todos eram do genero feminino. Entre as situacoes hipoteticas investigadas, os agentes demonstraram ter a percepcao do risco e atitude de leva-lo para discussao da equipe em 49% das situacoes envolvendo o risco a saude auditiva, 53% saude vocal, 60% e 62% os riscos relacionados a motricidade orofacial e linguagem, respectivamente. Nao foi encontrada relacao entre o tempo de atuacao e a percepcao do risco a saude fonoaudiologica. CONCLUSAO: Os agentes comunitarios mostraram ter percepcao de muitas situacoes de risco a saude fonoaudiologica dos usuarios, especialmente no que se refere a saude vocal e das estruturas e funcoes orofaciais. METHODS: Participants were 30 individuals - 15 female and 15 male - aged between 18 and 25 years, without hearing complaints and with hearing within normal limits. Data collection was carried out using the non-verbal dichotic test, the dichotic digits test, and suppressive transient otoacoustic emissions. RESULTS: In the non-verbal dichotic test, in the stage of right attention, there was difference between genders regarding the number of correct responses in the right ear. In the dichotic digits test, in binaural integration, there was difference between genders regarding the percentage of correct responses in the right ear. In the stage of directed attention, there was a tendency towards difference between genders on the percentage of correct responses in the left ear. Among female subjects, there was a tendency towards difference between right and left ears in the non-verbal dichotic test, free attention stage, and there was difference between ears in selective attention. In the dichotic digits test, in binaural integration, there was a tendency towards difference between ears.
