It also mentions the corollary for investor-owned corporations that maximizes shareholder value. The chapter assesses the extent to which the cooperative identity is understood as a system of private governance based on shared values and principles. It explains how the simple act of eating a meal relies on an increasingly complex and global food system, which involves manufacturing and distributing inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides, and seeds; producing agriculture; processing, distributing, and marketing products; and disposing of waste. It also considers food systems as more than market transactions as they involve a larger web of institutions, regulations, and relationships. The chapter highlights the association of greenhouse gas with all the components of the global food system, including growing, storing, and transporting the food. It cites the international scientific consensus indicating that humans are on a deadly trajectory as increasing amounts of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are released due to economic activities. It also describes that atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) are at their highest levels in over 800,000 years and continue to rise. The chapter discusses the alarming decline of biodiversity worldwide at the close of the 2010s, noting that humanity is at a critical juncture that leads to climate-related risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, personal security, and economic growth.
