Although impressive, existing approaches that rely on bulky fibre implementations lack the size and performance requirements for many applications. On-chip integration can improve the size, weight, and performance, however, no photonic frequency mixer has combined broadband image rejection with on-chip integration. Here, we demonstrate the first broadband integrated microwave photonic mixer with deep image rejection and -1dB conversion gain. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is used to select the desired RF signal and RF interferometry is used to further suppress the image component. By broadening the Brillouin pump, we down-convert multiple carrier signals (11 GHz and 12 GHz) with bandwidths of 400MHz and 100 MHz while achieving 16 dB and 28.5 dB of broadband image rejection, respectively.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117105150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency comb is generated due to the use of cascaded phase modulator and Mach Zehnder modulator in the OEO cavity. By adjusting the phase relationship between the comb lines using a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), a stable optical pulse train with compressed pulses is generated. Thanks to the low phase noise nature of an OEO, the generated pulse train has a low time jitter. The proposed approach is evaluated experimentally. A pulse train with a repetition frequency of 2.023 GHz and a pulse width of 40 ps is generated. The phase noise of the carrier frequency generated by the OEO is measured to be -118 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz offset frequency, corresponding to a time jitter of the pulse train of 391.2 fs. The phase noise can be further reduced if an active cavity stabilization mechanism is adopted, enabling further reduction in the time jitter to the order of tens of femtoseconds.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126630931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, a pulsed THz train with a repetition rate of 25-GHz was generated which is an envelope or averaged intensity of optical pulses. To generate steerable THz pulsed beam, we fabricated a monolithic InP substrate photonics integrated circuit that includes a uniform linear array of four InP/InGaAs UTC-PDs with integrated bow-tie antennas. Concurrently, four variable fiber-optic delay lines were employed in the demonstration setup for altering optical path length (OPL) of the propagating laser pulses in different channels, which eventually resulted in a altered time-delay of the THz pulses. Thus, with a gradient OPL of the laser pulse being adjusted for each UTC-PD, the pulsed THz wave can be continuously steered within a range of 40° at the elevation plane.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129847386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the MWP sideband processing, the superposed optical resonance shifts caused by the variation of measurand of interest and the undesired temperature perturbations are transformed into the shift of an ultra-deep notch in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum with high resolution. Simultaneously, the concurrent nonlinear change of the optical resonance extinction ratio is manifested as the variation of DC bias of the modulator. To eliminate the temperature interference in real time, the ML algorithm of support vector regression (SVR) adept at nonlinear regressions is established, through the training with RF notch frequencies and exploited DC bias voltages. As a proof-of-concept, the relative humidity (RH) sensing based on a polymethyl methacrylate coated silicon microring resonator as the sensor probe is performed at different temperatures. Over 50 dB high RF rejection ratio, indicating the high sensing resolution, is achieved during the whole sensing process. Despite the small training datasets, the established SVR-based model effectively eliminates temperature induced variances and guarantees a mean absolute error of 1.30% RH.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131859064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Filters based on RF photonics are an attractive alternative compared to conventional RF electronic filters due to their frequency agility and tunability. However, the implementation of multi-band, high-performance notch filters has not been demonstrated due to limitations of previous filtering schemes and on-chip device performance. Here, we overcome these limitations by cascading an active on-chip Brillouin As2 S3 waveguide and multiple passive, low-loss Si3 N4 micro-ring resonators. In doing so, we produce multiple RF stopbands with frequency tunability over 20 GHz, low passband losses of 8 dB, 500 MHz 3dB bandwidth, and ultra-deep rejection exceeding 40 dB. We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the multi-band notch filter for both analog RF photonic filtering and image rejection for RF communication receivers.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134401163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
