Interference, which originates from pilot reuse (or contamination), can in principle be discriminated from the desired channels upon observing the distributions of path angles and amplitudes. In this paper we propose novel robust channel estimation algorithms exploiting path diversity in both angle and amplitude domains, relying on a suitable combination of a subspace projection and MMSE estimation. The proposed estimator improves on past methods in a wide range of system and topology scenarios.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132459693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike a conventional multi-active antenna array, signals impinging on parasitic elements in an ESPAR array cannot be processed, and only the output of the sole active element can be processed. In this context, for an ESPAR array, a sparse representation of the DoA estimation problem is formulated by first using an overcomplete dictionary composed of samples from the array manifold and then projecting them onto a set of directional beampatterns. The projection matrix is designed to divide the angle space of the receive antenna array into sectors which are accessed via their corresponding sector beampatterns formed on a time division basis. The sparse signal spectrum is reconstructed by the l1-SVD (singular value decomposition) method [1], where the sparsity is enforced by the l1-norm penalty. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124717636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We design an online power control strategy aiming at maximizing the long-term time-averaged data rate, given finite battery storage and operation constraints. Through problem transformation and Lyapunov optimization technique, we develop an online algorithm to determine transmit power based on the current energy level of the battery and channel fade condition. Our power solution does not rely on any knowledge of the statistics of energy arrivals and fading channel. It is provided in closed-form which not only provides insight to the energy management and transmission control actions, but also has minimum complexity for implementation. We further bound the performance of our proposed algorithm to that of the optimal solution. Simulation results demonstrate significant performance gain of the proposed strategy over the greedy approach.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"465 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125825280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assuming that the user's power demand profile as well as the electricity prices are known non-causally, the optimal energy management (EM) policy that jointly increases the privacy of the user and reduces his energy cost is characterized. The backward water-filling interpretation is provided for the optimal EM policy. While the energy cost is reduced by requesting more energy when the prices are lower, energy consumption privacy is achieved by a smoother output load. It is shown that both gains can be achieved by using a limited size storage unit. The optimal trade-off between the user's privacy and energy cost is characterized, and the impact of the size of the storage unit and the resolution of the smart meter readings on this trade-off is studied.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125054451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), it suffers from high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) leading to in-band and out-of-band distortion induced by the non-linearities of the power amplifier. In OFDM, the problem of PAPR reduction has been widely investigated. However, the different techniques seen in OFDM could not be directly applied in FBMC due to the polyphase network filters utilized therein. In this paper, we propose to use the null-subcarriers of the side-bands to reduce the PAPR value. Indeed, due to the low side-band power level of the FBMC, these sub-carriers could be modulated with an acceptable value to accommodate the PAPR reduction. The proposed method is designed through a geometric method aiming at minimizing the power of the side-band while minimizing the PAPR value. Compared with the traditional Tone Reservation (TR) technique, we show that the proposed technique presents good results in terms of PAPR Complementary Cumulative Distributed Function (CCDF) and Magnitude Error Rate (MER) and with a low power increase.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"18 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133970964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the optimal location of a jammer node is obtained in order to maximize the minimum of the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for a number of target nodes under location related constraints for the jammer node. Theoretical results are derived to specify scenarios in which the jammer node should be located as close to a certain target node as possible, or the optimal location of the jammer node is determined by two or three of the target nodes. In addition, explicit expressions for the optimal location of the jammer node are derived in the presence of two target nodes. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133046236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the use of a massive number of antenna elements at access nodes, the resulting beams have narrow beam width. However, the transmission of individual narrow beams may cause poor coverage in some areas as the energy is concentrated over the direction of their main lobes. To cope with that, a beam sweep procedure using phased arrays is adopted. Access nodes simultaneously transmit individual beams until a certain area of interest is thoroughly scanned. Then, distant points are covered as each beam can radiate energy using an individual transmit power. The goal is to find the minimum power setting by adjusting the individual power levels so that users over the scanned area can observe a minimum received power level. Due to the combinatorial nature and high dimensionality, this paper describes a non-iterative two-stage algorithm to perform the beam sweeping with moderate complexity, which is compared with a baseline iterative selfish algorithm. Preliminary simulation results indicate that the two-stage algorithm may perform at least equally well as the baseline approach in terms of total transmit power, consuming about 7% less power in the used simulation setup, and without suffering from any convergence issue.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132182218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This kind of impulsive noise can severely degrade the performance of linear receivers intended for operation under additive gaussian noise. Therefore, we propose the use of a quasi-optimal detection scheme with almost the same implementation complexity than the traditional linear receiver. Indeed, it only requires an additional memoryless saturating nonlinearity. This receiver is known to be optimal under a Laplacian noise distribution. We show that it is nearly optimal for the rest of the K-distribution family. Simulations results for the case of Wi-Fi 802.11b are presented quantifying the performance of this receiver compared with other interesting detection schemes. The results are very promising since improvements of 1 to 2 dB are shown to be achievable with small modifications in the linear receiver structure.","PeriodicalId":211324,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 16th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133540253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
