The antenna is intended as a cost-effective alternative to conformal fully phased arrays for airborne satellite communications terminals where radar cross section (RCS) or low aerodynamic drag are key design issues. The EHF design uses a tilted array located below the level of the fuselage. It is protected by a radome which is contoured to the aircraft surface. The installation is flush, meeting performance from zenith to 20 degrees above the horizon.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. Borup et al. (IEEE Transaction and Microwave Theory and Techniques, vol.T-MTT-35, p.383-395, 1987) that compared the fast Fourier transform-conjugate-gradient method (FFT-CGM) with the finite-element-time-domain methods. The authors expand and elaborate the findings of Borup et al. (BSG) for the case of TE-polarized illumination. The solution technique in this comparison, which is referred as the k-space algorithm, differs in (at least) two ways from the FFT-CGM employed in the BSG study. First, all of the integrals arising from the application of the method of moments formalism are transformed to line integrals along the cell boundaries. Seconds, the system of linear equations arising from the application of the method of moments is solved by iterated minimization of the squared error using several variational functions. Considering TE polarization of the illuminating plane wave, the effect of increasing the number of points in the mesh on the convergence of the solution is presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. It is shown that the SEM (singularity expansion method) poles of a smooth scatterer in three-dimension have three indexes (l, m, n). The l indicates the order of the creeping wave on the surface, and m and n describe the modes of the standing waves in two orthogonal directions. It is noted that the SEM poles of a sphere have two indexes (l, n); for a smooth scatterer, the index number of SEM poles is the same as the dimension number of the oscillation trajectory, but for a scatterer having nonsmooth points on the trajectory the index number of SEM poles will be larger, because the diffraction fields caused by these points have a number of orders.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. A UTD (uniform geometrical theory of diffraction) computer code has been developed to take into account higher-order field contributions such as double-diffracted fields among plates and cylinders for the location of antennas on an aircraft structure. The experimental verification of the code in canonical cases has been carried out. The radiation/scattering of complex shapes can be obtained by simulating these structures with simple shapes that provide a sufficiently accurate representation of the dominant reflection and diffraction effects.
