Using this effect, the vertical patterns of an experimental over the horizon (OTH) array were measured successfully using a tethered aerostat. An array with 32 elements was built over a sector conducting ground screen with square grids. Topics briefly mentioned include the aerostat's stability and the communication system used to transfer the data from the aerostat to the ground.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. A simple 2-D physical optics analysis has demonstrated that when a parabolic cylindrical reflector is fed by an array, a pulselike wide-beam far-field pattern can indeed be generated. The calculated pattern of a 3.65 m 2-D reflector antenna with f/D ratio of 0.333 is shown. The reflector is center-fed by a 13.6 GHz array of microstrip elements with 0.6 wavelength element spacing and uniform amplitude distribution. A ripple is formed on top of the beam because the reflector is in the near field of the array and thus the surface current formed on the reflector is not exactly sin x/x. In addition, not all the sidelobes of the array illuminate the reflector. Experimental results are reported for the Titan radar mapper, which requires a dual-fan-beam system with one beam on each side of the antenna axis. In this way, when the spacecraft flies by the Titan, the planet surface can be effectively mapped with a single radar by fast switching between the two fan beams. Due to the need of radar signatures at different encounter distances between the spacecraft and Titan surface, several fan beam scenarios are required, such as different beam widths and beam scan angles. Results for two cases are shown to demonstrate and verify the concept.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The results obtained can be used for the design of curved frequency selective reflectors and radomes. Although the discussion is based on a parabolic cylindrical surface, the technique can be extended to deal with other surface geometries as well. The surface current on each patch is assumed to be the same as the current induced on the center patch of a planar array which is tangential to the parabolic cylindrical surface at the patch. The planar array problem is solved by the spectral Galerkin's method. The scattered pattern from each of these patches is computed from the current induced on the patch. The superposition principle is the invoked to obtain the scattering from the conformal array.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The array is considered as both a transmitter fed by idealized probes and as a scatterer of plane waves. For the transmitter case, the input reflection coefficient versus incident angle is computed for various loads and substrates. The theory in both cases is confirmed by comparing its limit to isotropic cases with previous analyses. The inputs to the analysis are the substrate parameters, the array grid geometry, the patch dimensions including probe position, and the probe load impedance, which is assumed conjugate matched at broadside for the transmit case.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. Experiments are performed using copper strips as perturbations on a rod of dielectric constant 2.54. The metallic strip perturbations were on the broader side of the rectangular dielectric waveguide. The conducting ground plane was on the opposite side of the perturbed face. The E-plane radiation patterns were plotted in the X-band with strips of width 1 cm, for various perturbation spacings such as 1.75 cm, 1.9 cm, 2 cm, 2.1 cm and 2.25 cm. The experimental results reveal that the presence of the conducting ground plane improves the performance of the antenna.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The authors present the application of RDHT to adaptive antenna arrays. This algorithm is applied to a very simple adaptive array problem to show its effectiveness, an array of nine equidistant isotropic radiating elements. It is shown that the algorithm converges to the desired solution in less than ten iterations. Advances in VLSI technology allow hardware implementation of the transformation, so that the transform-domain LMS (least-mean-squares) algorithm will produce faster convergence of the adaptation process.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The analytical method is extended to the scanning antenna with a plane aperture. The author considers the radiation field to be the output of a time-invariant system. This makes it possible to analyze the characteristics of the antenna with linear system theory. He obtains the transfer function to prove that the system is stable and to provide a reliable basis for the transient analysis. The gain of the system can be also obtained. It is shown that the energy ratio of output and input in the scanning direction can be expressed by the gain of the system and the RMS (root-mean-square) bandwidth of the input signal. A simple formula directly calculable in the time domain is found for the far field.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. One of the advantages of choosing a sphere to be the scatterer is that the conclusion obtained may be more general than that drawn from a one or two-dimensional scatterer. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) using an incomplete collection of poles in the SEM expansion together with time-independent coefficients to calculate scattering current and scattered field is valid when the first creeping wave reaches the observation point; (2) the speed of the convergence of Prony series in one-direction and n-direction is mainly dependent on observation time and the properties of the excitation, respectively; and (3) SEM expansion is efficient to describe creeping wave contribution but not valid to describe the reflect portion in the response.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S.
