The antenna is to be used for the wind scatterometer radar, NSCAT, to be placed upon the NROSS satellite. The dual polarized NSCAT antenna consists of a pair of slotted waveguides fed through horns. The edge-wall 202-element slot array excites an H-plane flared horn; the broad-wall 202-element slot array excites a corrugated E-plane flared horn. The antennas are designed to have nearly identical far-field patterns. It is noted that careful attention to all construction tolerances was extremely important for maintaining proper beam pointing and scale lobe levels. This was particularly true for the edge-wall slot design.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. Cost reduction, primarily in the areas of receiver modules, I/Q generation, and array alignment/calibration, was an overall consideration. Individual components of the beamforming system are discussed. Topics covered include receiver modules, I/Q generation, calibration/array alignment, and the technique used for monitoring quality and integrity of digitized array data. The subject of system drift is addressed by comparing single-source receive patterns taken at various times. RF isolation is demonstrated using IF spectral plots computed from digitized receiver module data. In addition, single-source receive patterns for various arrival angles are presented. The experimental data is used to illustrate the performance of a DBF array in two rather important application areas, namely, spatial analysis for source detection and localization and adaptive nulling.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The results show that there are no particular advantages in using focusing antenna systems for generating multibeam coverages, with regard to overall hardware complexity. The required number of feeds and spots, to cover the same service area, are more or less the same (BFN complexity), while the reflector diameter has to be oversized, in the unfocusing antenna case, to maintain a uniform amplitude over the feeding array. Because NFO is capable of concentrating the RF-power resources in the zones where the traffic is present, this antenna configuration is more flexible for use in changing traffic.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. Two types of antennas are considered. One is an omnidirectional antenna for a low-gain application, and the other is a beam-steerable antenna for a high-gain application. For the latter, the authors have developed a mechanically steered tracking antenna which consists of an eight-element spiral printed array, a novel single-channel tracking controller, and an antenna drive mechanism. The antenna performance and its tracking system are presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. An array of radiators is used to control the aperture field distribution and hence the gain and the sidelobe levels of the far radiated fields. The method of moments is used to find the induced surface current distribution, the aperture field, and the far-field pattern. Since the problem is two-dimensional, all radiators are considered to be line sources. The numerical results show that the gain is increased and the sidelobe levels are greatly reduced for strip, corner, circular, and parabolic reflector antennas by using three line sources with proper choice of their positions, amplitudes, and phase.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S. The method is based on the fact that the pattern of an array is not more than the Fourier transform of the currents sequence; i.e. the sequence that results from discretizing the inverse Fourier transform of the pattern. This means that the feed currents are the coefficients of the Fourier series of the pattern with only N harmonics for a given array of N elements. The results obtained assure that, although the shape of the main beam is practically constant for all the windows, the transition from the shaped zone to the side lobes becomes more abrupt as the function which is used to convolve is elaborated. A reduction of the side lobes of the function is also accompanied by the same effect in the pattern.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":211271,"journal":{"name":"1988 IEEE AP-S.
