The number of M. grisea isolates from each field utilized for virulence testing varied from 28 to 47. Three different indices were used based on reaction type in the eight standard international differentials and eight Brazilian differentials. The M. grisea subpopulations of ´Primavera' and 'Bonanca', as measured by Simpson, Shannon and Gleason indices, showed similar phenotypic diversities. The Simpson index was more sensitive relation than those of Shannon and Gleason for pathotype number and standard deviation utilizing Brazilian differentials. However, the Gleason index was sensitive to standard deviation for international differentials. The sample size did not significantly influence the diversity index. The two sets of differential cultivars used in this study distinguished phenotypic diversity in different ways in all of the eight subpopulations analyzed. The phenotypic diversity determined based on eight differential Brazilian cultivars was lower in commercial rice fields of 'Primavera' than in the fields of 'Bonanca,' independent of the diversity index utilized, year and location. Considering the Brazilian differentials, the four subpopulations of 'BRS Primavera' did not show evenness in distribution and only one pathotype dominated in the populations. The even distribution of pathotype was observed in three subpopulations of 'BRS Bonanca'. The pathotype diversity of M. grisea was determined with more precision using Brazilian differentials and Simpson index.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114764111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The assay was set up in an organic crop in Santo Antonio do Amparo, MG, made up of four-year-old coffee trees cv. \"Acaia MG-474-19\", in a randomized block design with four replicates. The treatments were: 1. Control, treated with Vica-cafe plus® sprayed in December, January and Febuary; 2. Control sprayed with water; 3. Aqueous extract of coffee fruit peel (CFC); 4. Aqueous extract of rust infected coffee leaf (EFID); 5. Aqueous extract of lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum) infected with Crinipellis perniciosa (VLA); 6. Commercial extract of citric biomass (Ecolife®). Coffee trees were sprayed monthly from March 4th to June 26th in 2005. CFP and EFID reduced the incidence of rust, brown eye spot and Phoma spot comparatively to the controls. CFC reduced severity of brown eye spot by 47% compared to the control sprayed with water. EFID and VLA reduced the severity of rust by 31 and 27%. The largest disease reduction was obtained by EFID with 61% reduction in incidence of Phoma spot compared to the control sprayed with water. Ecolife® had an intermediate performance, between the best treatments and the controls. EFID, CFC and VLA were associated with higher accumulation of lignin in the foliar tissues, differing from the negative and positive controls.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128985824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Control has been possible by means of genetic resistance. This work aimed to identify efficient methods of inoculation to assess the soybean genotypes genetically resistant to SDS. Two experiments were arranged in a randomized block design (RBD). The former consisted of six treatments and 12 replicates, and the latter of six treatments and 16 replicates. Each plot contained a pot with one plant of the cultivar FT Estrela, highly susceptible to SDS, and another plant of the moderately resistant cultivar Conquista. The plants were assessed in relation to incidence and severity of SDS, every three days, for fifteen days, starting from the fifteenth day of emergence. From the data obtained, the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was estimated for the treatments. Inoculations with grains of sorghum and corn were the most effective in causing the appearance of the disease in the first experiment. Inoculations with corn kernels were the most effective method in causing the disease in the second experiment. However, only inoculation with corn kernels permitted the separation between genotypes in relation to SDS resistance, according to Tukey test (P<0.05) in both experiments. Thus, inoculation with corn kernels can be recommended for assessing soybean genotype reactions to SDS under greenhouse conditions.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"305 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120939210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 29 isolates from papaya were identified as C. gloeosporioides, based mainly on conidial and appressoria morphology, with most isolates producing cylindrical and/or obclavate conidia and entirely or weakly lobed appressoria, in contrast with the strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) isolate of C. acutatum, which produced fusiform conidia and circular appressoria with entire edges. Presence of setae, teleomorphic stage, colony color, sensitivity to benomyl and growth rate were variable among isolates and influenced by the culture medium. All papaya isolates and four isolates (C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum) from other hosts, mango (Mangifera indica), strawberry and apple (Malus domestica), were pathogenic to papaya fruits cv. Sunrise Solo, producing similar symptoms, but with variability in aggressiveness. PCR with C. gloeosporioides-specific primer, CgInt, confirmed the identity of four papaya isolates. Two other isolates reacted with C. acutatum-specific primer, CaInt2. The majority of papaya isolates (23), however, did not react with any of the primers tested. In contrast, RFLP analysis of the amplified ITS region with RsaI, generated distinct patterns that could differentiate between the two species, C. gloeosporioides and C. acutatum, and showed uniformity among papaya isolates.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133698471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Genetic resistance is the most effective and environmentally sound way to control the disease. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the number of genes and gene action involved in the inheritance of resistance to race IA-1abd of Pyricularia grisea in rice genotypes. The inoculation of the fungus was performed on fixed (P1, P2 and F1) and segregating (F2, RC1F1 and RC2F1) populations, composed of cultivars BRS 7 \"Taim\", BRS Firmeza, BRS Atalanta and Fanny. The results show that there is dominance for the gene action based on the six generations (P1, P2, F1, F2, RC1F1 and RC2F1), which confirms the presence of one gene with two alleles. In all reciprocal crosses no maternal effect was observed. In the cross between resistant parents (BRS 7 \"Taim\" and BRS Firmeza), there was no segregation in the generations F2 and backcrosses, suggesting that both parents have the same genetic constitution for the reaction of resistance to the IA-1abd race. The segregating generations (F2 and RC1F1) of all crosses between resistant and susceptible genotypes did not differ from the expected ratio of 3:1 and 1:1, respectively, suggesting that these cultivars, \"Taim\" and BRS Firmeza, have one dominant gene responsible for the expression of the character resistance reaction.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124114251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pathogenicity of an isolate obtained from diseased foliage of H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata cv. Golden Torch was demonstrated by inoculation of detached leaves and inflorescences of that cultivar of heliconia. Susceptibility of ten heliconia cultivars to pestalotiopsis flower and leaf spot was evaluated on freshly cut inflorescences by inoculation of the fungus on previously injured areas of floral bracteas. The fungus had acervular conidiomata, epidermal to subepidermal, fusiform conidia, straight to slightly curved, measuring 21.0-26.5 x 6.5-8.5 µm, four septates with the three median cells dark brown, three to five filiforme apical appendages, 8-15 x 1.0 µm and a basal pedicel, 5.0 x 1.0 µm. The fungus was identified as Pestalotiopsis pauciseta. Inoculation of detached leaves and flowers by laying the culture disk of P. pauciseta over previously damaged tissues has demonstrated that the fungus is the etiological agent of this new heliconia disease. Evaluation of resistance to pestalotiopsis spot showed that H. rostrata and H. caribeae x H. bihai cv. Jacquinii were the most resistant among the tested cultivars. No lesions were produced on H. rostrata after inoculation. H. stricta cv. Las Cruzes was the most susceptible, followed by H. wagneriana.
