Concepts of phenotypic stability were used to interpret the results and to express horizontality of the resistance. The linear regression coefficient 'b', the determination coefficient (R2) and average lesion size were used to determine the level of horizontal resistance, the phenotypic stability and the predictability of all clones. The results indicated that clones P 7 and MA 15 present highest levels of horizontal resistance and stability, but with moderate predictability. Clones CAS 1 and CEPEC 13 were classified as those with high horizontal resistance, stability and predictability, while clones PA 30, UF 650 and SIAL 88 and EET 59 showed intermediate resistance and stability and high predictability. Clones SPA 17, OC 61, PA 150, SIAL 505, ICS 1 and R 41 presented high susceptibility and intermediate or low stability and moderate or high predictability.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116260205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The embryo explants were obtained from coffee seeds cv. Rubi. Plants produced in vitro were inoculated with 5µL of a 106 conidia.mL-1 spore suspension, on the hypocotyl region and leaves, wounding with an entomological needle. Isolates of Colletotrichum gloesporioides were obtained from stem (IS) and leaves (IL) from plants with symptoms of greasy leaf spot, and from mangos with symptoms of anthracnose (IM). Isolates of Colletotrichum dematium were obtained from healthy coffee plants. Three hours after inoculation (h.a.i.), leaves and hypocotyl fragments were transferred to 1.5mL-microtubes containing modified Karnovsky's fixative solution. Further samples were collected at 3, 5, 12, 16, 24, 48, 72, 96, 114 and 144 h.a.i. Conidia of all isolates adhered more frequently in the depressions of hypocotyls and guard-cells, forming a septum 5 h.a.i. Germ tubes were observed 12 h.a.i. starting from the extremities as well as laterally in the conidia. Appressoria were produced by C. dematium (globoses, trilobullated and foot and comma-shaped), and C. gloeosporioides, respectively globoses, 24 h.a.i. C. gloeosporioides (IH and IF) produced conidiogenic cells 48 h.a.i. Acervuli were produced 72 h.a.i. by C. gloeosporioides (IH), 96 h.a.i. by C. dematium. C. gloeosporioides isolated from mango colonized coffee plant tissues, producing conidiogenic cells without production of acervuli. The most aggressive isolates were IS and IL.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130758041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is thus imperative to treat seeds and grain to preserve quality. The objective of this work was to test antifungal activity at different levels of Allium sativum L. and Cymbopogon citratus Stapf. extracts for F. proliferatum control on maize seeds and grain, and also to observe the effect of those products on seed germination and disease development and evolution in maize seedlings. The effect of A. sativum and C. citratus extracts was evaluated at levels of 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.5%, 5.0% and 10.0% for eight days, measuring the colonies' diameter. Fungus spores were immersed in extract solution at the levels described above, and were evaluated after 6, 12, 18 and 24 immersion hours for conidia germination. Maize seeds were treated with extract solution and inoculated with F. proliferatum, then evaluated forfungus survival, germination, damping off and stem rot of plantlets. Extracts decreased mycelial growth, spore germination and survival incidence of F. proliferatum on maize grain. Allium extract at 2,5% showed better results than other treatments. Natural extracts increased seed germination and controlled damping off and stem rot diseases in maize seedlings.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114341451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fungus is a necrotrophic pathogen which survives in stubble, seeds and weeds. Isolation of R. secalis from seeds on artificial media usually has not been successful due to the slow growth rate of the pathogen and strong inhibition by contaminants. The objective in this work was to detect R. secalis in different genotypes of barley seeds in Argentina using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostic assay. Four barley genotypes were tested in 2004: Quilmes Ayelen, Quilmes Alfa, Barke and Malteria Pampa 1004. The previously described RS8 and RS9 primers were used for the detection of R. secalis in barley seeds. A 264-bp single band was obtained for each cultivar showing the presence of R. secalis. The use of specific primers was efficient in the detection of R. secalis in barley seeds in Argentina and could be used for routine diagnosis, epidemiology and seed transmission studies. This is the first report on the detection of R. secalis in barley seeds in Argentina.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125864985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was conducted in an area where both pathogens occurred naturally and in a greenhouse using soil naturally infested with P. palmivora. Black-spot severity was evaluated using a scale, from 1 (0-3% of the surface covered by lesions) to 6 (> of 50% of the surface covered by lesions). The evaluations were made between March / 2003 and April / 2003 and between October / 2003 and February / 2004. Foot-rot was evaluated, on the field trial, by counting the total number of plants with yellowing or wilt symptoms in the same period. On the greenhouse trials P. palmivora severity was evaluated in each plant using a scale from 0 (no wilt symptoms) to 3 (plant death). In relation to black-spot, the genotype 'Sekati' of the Formosa group presented the lowest average value of severity (2,0) on the foliage while ''Golden' (3,1) and NT Red' (3,7) had the largest. 'Tailândia Roxao' (1,6), 'Tailândia Verde' (1,7) and 'Sekati' (1,7) also had the lowest averages of severity on the fruit, while, 'Tailândia Roxo' (2,3), 'Cross Paris' (2,5), and 'Sunrise Solo' (3,1) presented the largest. In relation to foot rot, 'Tailândia Roxao' (Formosa group) presented low amount of disease and 'Golden', 'Sunrise Solo, and 'NT Red' presented higher values.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122670560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the lack of information about this disease in Brazil, this research on its epidemiology has been carried out. The mean latency period, the frequency of infection process and size of lesions on four genotypes of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) ENA 1, Composto II, BRS 1501 and HKP were evaluated in the greenhouse. In vitro, the germination of the urediniospores was monitored at different temperatures (10, 15, 20 and 25oC), with or without light. After this, the infection process was compared for the genotypes Guerguera, Souna III, BRS 1501 and ENA 1, in a growth chamber, with the leaf wetting time of 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 hours, with or without light, and in greenhouse, on the genotypes ENA 1, Guerguera and Souna III, with the leaf wetting times of 3/4, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours. A mean latency period for pearl millet rust between 10 and 12 days was shown, and the urediniospores germinated in a wide range of temperatures, from 10 to 25oC, with or without light, with a maximum germination at 17.5oC in the dark. In these conditions, the germination of first spores initiated for less than 45 min at a maximum percentage of 88.2%, with 1.7 h of incubation. Leaf infection can also start after 45 min of leaf wetting after inoculation, but there is a beneficial effect of dark and longer leaf wetting time.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123468816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the effect of LSM on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) diseases caused by Sclerotium rolfsii was studied. LSM was incorporated into 1 m2 plots at doses equivalent to 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 m3 ha-1. The soil was infested two months prior to LSM application with 100 g of substrate (unhulled rice) colonized by the pathogen. Eighty bean seeds were sown per plot in two successive cultivations, 1 day and 45 days after LSM application. Intensity of the disease was evaluated based on plant emergence, final stand, and severity of the disease, in both cultivations. Microbial activity, ammonia concentration at the soil surface layer, and fertility levels were only evaluated in the second cultivation. A reduction in disease intensity was observed as LSM doses increased. Among the characteristics evaluated, the factors that best explain such a reduction are increased microbial activity, ammonia concentration, and copper and zinc levels.","PeriodicalId":211183,"journal":{"name":"Fitopatologia Brasileira","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133103914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
