In this retrospective research we used Cardiac CT Angiography images of 40 patients (age range 23-80, 30 males, 10 females). The area of epicardial adipose tissue and total calcium score values were measured. All the patients were examined for obstructive coronary artery disease. Epicardial adipose tissue areas were measured in the level of the left main coronary artery. The data obtained were analyzed with SPSS program. 13 patients were found positive for Ca score and coronary stenosis was dedected in 18 patients. There is independent correlation between the area of epicardial adipose tissue and; age and total calcium score (age: p=0.003, total calcium score: p=0.020). Based on results and statiscal analysis, the area of epicardial adipose tissue was found statistically significant among the patients, who have positive Ca score (p=0.017) and coronary artery stenosis (p=0.019). As result, based on the outcomes of this study, it can be concluded that the increase of epicardial adipose tissue has significant impact on occurence of coronary artery stenosis and calcific-atherosclerotic changes. Also, for the calculation of epicardial adipose tissue quantity, the measurement of cross section area from left main coronary artery surface is a good alternative to have an easiness of measurement as well as total volume of epicardial adipose tissue.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125893951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is stated that cytotoxic DNA platinum inserts, platinum transport mechanisms and pro-apoptotic DNA damage are the main causes of platinum-based renal toxicity. We have discussed the oxidative mitochondrial stress and apoptosis states that occur to understand the basic mechanism of this situation. Various antioxidants have been proposed in Cisplatin (Cisp) induced nephrotoxicities. Here we focused on the protective effects of curcumin (CurC), a powerful antioxidant, against this Cisp-induced nephrotoxicity. Groups were created as Control, Cisplatin, Curcumin and Cisp+CurC. There was a significant increase in Cisp-induced lipid peroxidation (LP), unlike GSH and GSH-Px values. Treatment with curcumin reversed these values. Mitochondrial membrane depolarization, Reactive oxygen species (ROS), caspase activations, and apoptosis levels significantly increased in Cisp groups. Curcumin brought these values back to normal. As a result, these data contributed to the understanding of molecular mechanisms in Cisp-induced nephrotoxicity. Curcumin usage in treatment protocols of cancer patients may be protective for Cisp-induced nephrotoxicity.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116734525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients with a diagnosis of RA (n = 20), SLE (n = 20) and Behçet's disease (n = 20) and a healthy control group (n = 19) were included in our study. Disease activity indexes, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were recorded in the patient groups. Serum TWEAK levels were measured with available commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay kits. The s erum TWEAK levels were significantly higher in all patient groups compared to the control group. However, no significant difference was found in paired comparisons among patient groups. When the patients with high disease activity scores were compared to patients with low disease activity scores in RA, SLE and Behçet’s disease subgroups, there was no significant difference in terms of TWEAK levels. Hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and smoking had no effect on serum TWEAK levels. In correlation analysis, although serum TWEAK levels showed a significant negative correlation with age (r = -0.361, p = 0.005), there was no significant correlation with body mass index (BMI), ESR, and CRP levels. In RA, SLE and Behçet's disease, although different inflammatory pathways and different cytokine release patterns play a role in their pathogenesis, the similar increase in serum TWEAK levels and the absence of a relationship with the disease activity scores reflecting the last stage of inflammation may indicate that the TWEAK / Fn14 pathway plays a role in earlier stages where the inflammatory pathways have not differentiated yet.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"344 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124252215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Serum sulfhydryl level is among the non-enzymatic antioxidant products that play a crucial role in scavenging of elevated reactive oxygen species produced as a result of deterioration in oxidative stress homeostasis. We were examined the changes in these two mechanisms of activity enzyme some antioxidant (Serum glutathione S transferase and serum total sulfhydryl) in patients with oral cavity malignancy. Forty-five people were included in the study. The patient group consisted of 20 (5 female, 15 male), control group 25 (6 female, 19 male, healthy individuals who were recruited from ear-nose-throat outpatient clinic). Serum glutathione S transferase activity and total sulfhydryl level were measured by spectrophotometric method. The mean value of glutathione S transferase (0.005±0.002 nmol/l) in the study group was found to be significantly lower than the control group (0.046±0.007 nmol/l) (p=0.0001). The mean value of total sulfhydryl in the study group (0.344±0.350 mmol/l) was significantly lower than the control group (2.002±0.271 mmol/l) (p=0.0001). Glutathione S transferase activity and total sulfhydryl level that play a role in defending against the reactive oxygen species are among the important and promising parameters which can be used in the follow-up of cancer patients, in the selection of treatment modalities and in cancer research. As a result, glutathione S transferase and total sulfhydryl may be a marker in oral cavity cancers.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131290585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies have suggested that trophoblast invasion and placental development occur in a relatively hypoxic environment during early pregnancy. In this study, we aimed to evaluate ischemic modified albumin (IMA) and thiol/disulfide ratios as an indicator of oxidative stress in early pregnancy losses. In this observational and prospective study, 30 healthy pregnant women, 30 pregnant women with early pregnancy loss in 6-14 weeks of pregnancy, and 30 healthy women with random sampling in reproductive age who applied to Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University Education and Research Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Department were included. The patients’ total disulphide parameters (Native Thiol [NT], Disulfide [D], and Total Thiol [TT]), disulfide/native thiol (index 1), disulfide/ total thiol (index 2), and native thiol/ total thiol (index 3) were studied. In statistical analyses, the level of disulfide was significantly lower in the early pregnancy losses (EPL) group compared to the control group. In the post-hoc analysis, the IMA level was significantly higher in the EPL and healthy pregnant group compared to the control group. In conclusion, the difference in IMA levels in our study and its compatibility with the literature suggests that this marker can be used in early pregnancy loss, however, in terms of thiol balance, there was no significant difference in native thiol and thiol in contrast to the literature, and in terms of disulfide, contradictory results are found. Thus, studies with larger populations are needed about the use of thiol and IMA in early pregnancy loss.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124210881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The treatment of tuberculosis (TB) caused by multidrug-resistant or extensively resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) strains is a challenging concern and may not be achieved by conventional treatment options. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effect of MSC and their niches on MTB growth in culture medium. Frozen adipose-derived MSC were grown in culture medium until they became confluent. MSC and their niches, which were the factors secreted in two-day medium, were used as the conditioned medium and their effects on MTB were evaluated. MTB was maintained in liquid medium until a positive growth signal appeared on the Bactec MGIT 960 device (Becton Dickinson, Sparks, MD, USA). The growth periods (in days) were recorded. In the latter stage, the effects of 104 MSC in 100 µl medium, of the MSC niche that had been maintained with MSC in 100 µl medium for 48 h, and of their combined use on MTB growth were analyzed. After the appearance of a positive growth signal, the MTB growth and cell morphology in the tubes were examined under light microscopy. It was revealed that both MSC and MTB sustained viability in liquid medium. In the tubes administered with niches, the MTT assay showed MSC proliferation. However, in the tubes administered with a combination of MSC and niches or niches, MTB growth was inhibited and delayed. The retardant effect of MSC and their niches on MTB proliferation in liquid medium implicates that MSC and their niches can be used as therapeutic products in TB treatment. Substantiating the contribution of this excellent effect, which was found in in vitro studies, to TB treatment via 3D biomedical supports and animal model studies will have a strong effect for phase studies. Accordingly, we consider that the investigation of stem cell and its secretion, which has high reliability and low cost, in clinical studies is of paramount importance for ensuring patients’ quality of life.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"476 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122099066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine the psychiatric symptom levels of young women clinically diagnosed with IGM, to compare the age and sex-matched controls and to investigate the factors affecting depressive symptoms in patients with IGM. A total of 32 patients and 32 age and sex-matched volunteers were included in the study. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were recorded and Beck's depression and health anxiety inventory were applied. A significant difference was found between the Beck depression inventory and health anxiety inventory scores between the patient and control groups. There was a strong correlation between breast mass size and Beck depression inventory (r:0.83, p:0.01), also moderate correlation was found between breast mass size and health anxiety (r:0.39, p:0.05). In the logistic regression model (χ2:12.274, R2:0.469, p:0.01) created by the retrospective elimination method, presentation with fistula (OR:9.24), the bilateral lesion (OR:7.25) and disease duration (for each month OR:1.29) were found to be significant. In this study, it was determined anxiety and depression levels higher in patients with IGM and also clinical futures of IGM (fistula, bilateral lesions, and disease duration) affect depression levels at different levels. For this reason, it is thought that psychosocial evaluation of patients from the time of diagnosis, referring them to psychiatric treatment if necessary may improve the quality of life of the patients.","PeriodicalId":210978,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Academic Medicine and Pharmacy","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127672817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
