As such, he needs to define the complexity of cultural ethos of his times. English language, Indian culture and ‘Globalisation’ are part of our common heritage, and we study these to define an identity for ourselves. Sabda as Brahman or Word as God points to a mystery beyond the obvious. Language and culture are inseparable and both demand care and attention for their preservation. Introduction of English language in India was part of a hidden agenda of colonisation. English is necessary, but so is the knowledge of our roots. We have fallen for Macaulay's trap and neglected our culture and tradition. The recovery lies in rediscovering the living tenets of Indian culture.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129829432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques, the present study includes the quantitative analysis of land use and land cover change in one of the non-glacial-fed watershed of Kumaun Lesser Himalaya, India, viz., the Gagas watershed. The Survey of India topographic sheet of the year 1965 and LISS III satellite data for the year 2008 have been utilised to quantify the change from 1965 to 2008, i.e., over a period of 43 years. Supervised classification methodology has been employed using maximum likelihood technique in ERDAS 9.3 and mapped using ARC GIS to categorise the images into three classes, viz., forest, agriculture and barren land. The results indicate that during the last four decades, due to afforestation, the forest cover in the Gagas watershed has been increased by about 8.5% (or 43.62 km2) and the agricultural and barren land have decrease by 0.14% (6.69 km2) and by 7.2% (36.93 km2), respectively.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130062098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This small text, consists of a few pages of Sanskrit verses, has its historical importance in astronomy and mathematics because of the position of solstices and equinoxes recorded therein. This oldest astronomical treatise is a collection of seventy nine verses in two recensions. The first recensionknown as, Ārca- Jyotia, and consists of thirty six verses from Rigveda and the second recensionknown as, Yājua -Jyotia, which consists of forty three verses from Yajurveda. However, most of the verses are common in both recensions. This treatise ‘Vedāga Jyotia’ on mathematical astronomy was authored by ‘Rishi’ Lagadha probably in latter Vedic period. In Vedāga Jyotia, mainly the motions of the Moon and the Sun were summarized to perform the Vedic rituals and periodic sacrifices at particular times. The Vedāga Jyotia preserves the traditional knowledge of mathematical sciences, which was developed during Vedic period. The achievement in astronomy was based on mathematical calculations. The object of this paper is to bring out the mathematical rules used in Vedāga Jyotia for astronomical calculations, time period and place of observations, division of time and description of some the important studies of Vedāga Jyotia in chronological order.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114208259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a sort of built-in and self-regulating mechanism by which a company monitors and ensures its dedication and commitment for complying with the spirit of law, ethical standards, and national and international norms. It enables the integration of business interests with that of the communities. Its ultimate aim is to contribute to sustainable development. The key drivers for CSR are enlightened self-interest, social investment, transparency and trust, and increased public expectations of business. An organisation's performance in a socially responsible manner can influence its competitive advantage; reputation; capability to attract and keep hold of workers, members, customers, clients, users; maintenance of morale, commitment and productivity of employees; view of investors, owners, donors, sponsors and the financial community; and relationship with companies, governments, media, suppliers, customers and the community in which it operates. Numerous CSR initiatives have been taken up at global and national levels. These include United Nations Global Compact, Principles for Responsible Investment, Global Corporate Citizen Initiative, ISO 26000: 2010 – Guidance on Social Responsibility, SA 8000 Standard, Global Business Coalition on Health, Roundtable on Sustainable Development, Global Reporting Initiative, Corporate Social Responsibility Voluntary Guidelines 2009, and National Voluntary Guidelines on Social, Environmental and Economic Responsibilities of Business. However, it has been argued that the corporate sector is still not doing enough in this direction and due to which gaps are being observed in the fulfillment of the promises being made by the companies in their corporate social responsibility policies.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114552685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This tribe occupies a unique place in the tribal world because of its distinguished family system, that is, Polyandry. Since the last four decades this tribe has become one of the most progressive tribes in Uttrakhand. Literacy rate shows an encouraging trend. According to census report 2001, the literacy rate of the Jaunsari tribe is 58.9%, which is higher than the average ST literacy rate (47.10%). On the other hand, the Jaunsari male literacy rate is 71.7%, which is higher than average ST male literacy rate (59.20%). Jaunsari female literacy rate is 44.8%, which is slightly higher than the average ST female literacy rate (34.76%). Despite these achievements, there is a large mass of Jaunsari community, which remains outside the portal of formal education. This paper highlights the constraints in the promotion of education among the Jaunsaris as well as suggestions for overcoming these problems.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133167271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Food production in and around the household is the most ancient form of cultivation. Despite mounting evidence that backyard gardens yield surprisingly significant nutritional and economic benefits to gardening households and societies, they have been ignored as a legitimate area of research. Understanding the present state of the art of garden research may be a key to elevating the household gardening food strategy to its rightful place in the study and improvement of agricultural system. In the present time only the developed countries of the world realize the important of Kitchen Garden with organic farming, which is good example for the developing and underdeveloped countries of the world. In Sikkim besides the geographical structure of the state, Sikkim able to developed the practice of Kitchen Garden with organic farming. While the economic development and growth of the country or state is depends on three basic sectors called Primary, secondary and tertiary sector, where the contribution of primary sector is maximum in developing and under-developed country. But still these types of country face a problem like food deficit. The occurrence of unnatural phenomenon of food deficit in the developing and under developed countries where the maximum number of rural people are directly depends on primary sector for their livelihood is a big Question mark in human world. The practice of micro and the macro Kitchen Garden is able to solve the problem of food deficit and also provide the source of income through sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":210568,"journal":{"name":"Quest-The Journal of UGC-ASC Nainital","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121833444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
