Amongst these applications, social web has emerged as one of the most eye-catching changes. Social network software and applications have gained increasing dominance in our daily lives. The purpose of current study is then to explore prospective teachers’ views on the use objectives of social networking sites and overall social media. The research has been conducted on 159 prospective teachers studying at Sakarya University, Faculty of Education. As data collection tool, “Social Networking Site Use Objective Scale” developed by Karal and Kokoç (2009) and “Views on Social Media Form” prepared by Dikme (2013) have been utilized. Research findings manifest that prospective teachers’ use of social network sites for “Social Interaction and Communication” and “Know and be known” is in average level; use for educational purposes is in upper level. It has also been detected that gender, department, internet-use experiences and internet-use durations create no significant differentiation on the use objectives of social networking sites. Furthermore this research has also pointed out that prospective teachers hold the belief that social media leaves an effect on society and people in addition to overall life.","PeriodicalId":209037,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Educational Technology","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115568311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the use of such SNS paves the way for questioning how these sites can be effectively used in educational environments. Since the SNSs in educational environments are potentially used, Educational Social Networking Sites (ESNSs) in the market such as Edmodo, Ning, Elgg, which are innovative educational environments with social networking capabilities, have also been employed in education. The aim of this study is to determine why the undergraduate students use the Internet, SNSs and Edmodo which is an ESNS and to investigate their views about these tools. In this context, Edmodo was used within the scope of an undergraduate course. And in order to collect data about this experience, interviews with 15 students and a focus group interview with 7 students were performed. In analysis and interpretation of the data used, both uses and gratifications theory and diffusions of innovations theory were taken into consideration. As a result, it was found that the students expressed their likes about Edmodo’s features of assignment, quiz, poll and announcement / sharing. The study also reveals that the students also expressed their thoughts about the contributions of Edmodo to educational environments.","PeriodicalId":209037,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Educational Technology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123341290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through a survey with participation of 183 undergraduate ELT students from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (Turkey), this paper attempts to find out media literacy perceptions of pre-service teachers based on the theories provided by the scholars in this field as well as to explore the relationship between Media Literacy perceptions of the students and their age, gender and class levels. Results showed that pre-service teachers attending English Language Teaching Department are eminently aware of the concepts of Media Literacy, no significant statistical differences were observed between the genders and among classes, the frequency of participants’ use of media forms is not so high in comparison with their level of Media Literacy perception, they are highly aware of the benefits of Media Literacy to teaching and learning English Language.","PeriodicalId":209037,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Educational Technology","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121561873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
