Pandangan ini tidak bersifat holistik kerana ketamadunan seharusnya dilihat berdasarkan kombinasi maju fizikal, mental dan rohani anggota masyarakat. Fizikal, mental dan rohani mesti seimbang dalam konteks ini. Maju mental dan rohani ini berkaitan dengan kesantunan berbahasa yang menjadi isu dari semasa ke semasa dalam kalangan anggota masayarakat. Perkembangan teknologi semasa yang menyediakan platform perkongsian maklumat di media sosial mempamerkan masyarakat yang “sakit” apabila kesantunan berbahasa tidak dipraktiskan. Terdapat segelintir anggota masyarakat yang tidak mempraktiskan peraturan linguistik, sosiolinguistik dan pragmatik apabila berkomunikasi yang menyebabkan situasi berkonflik wujud. Di Malaysia, isu ini dianggap serius. Bagi membendung masalah ini, Parlimen Malaysia telah menggubal undang-undang yang dirujuk sebagai Akta Komunikasi dan Multimedia 1998 [Akta 588] dan beberapa Akta lain yang berkaitan dengan penggunaan bahasa dan cakupan maknanya kepada masyarakat di media sosial. Penggunaan bahasa ini berkaitan dengan kesantunan berbahasa. Kegagalan anggota masyarakat dalam mempraktiskan kesantunan berbahasa ini bertitik tolak daripada tindakan dan pilihan anggota masyarakat sendiri. Ini kerana dasar pendidikan dan kitab suci dalam mana-mana agama pun sememangnya mengajar penganutnya untuk mewujudkan suasana bebas konflik. Suasana bebas konflik dapat diwujudkan apabila anggota masyarakat mengamalkan kesantunan berbahasa. Lanjutan itu, kesedaran akan perlunya kesantunan berbahasa harus dilakukan dari semasa ke semasa bagi mengelakkan konflik dalam negara yang juga tidak mustahil akan tersebar di luar negara sekiranya gagal dibendung. Civilization is often associated with the physical progress of a nation. This perspective is not holistic because civilization should be evaluated based on a combination of physical, mental, and spiritual advancement of the members of society. Physical, mental, and spiritual aspects should be in balance in this context. Mental and spiritual progress is closely related to language politeness, which periodically becomes an issue among community members. The current technological advancements that provide information-sharing platforms on social media highlight a society that is 'ailing' when language politeness is not practiced. There are some community members who do not adhere to linguistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic rules when communicating, leading to the emergence of conflict situations. In Malaysia, this issue is taken seriously. To address this problem, the Malaysian Parliament has enacted laws referred to as the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588] and several other related Acts that regulate the use of language and its interpretation in social media among the public. The use of language is related to language politeness. The failure of community members to practice language politeness stems from their ","PeriodicalId":208911,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language Education and Applied Linguistics","volume":"35 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139282774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reka bentuk kajian ini merupakan kajian tindakan yang melibatkan empat peringkat pelaksanaannya iaitu merancang, bertindak, memerhati dan merefleks. Instrumen kajian ini melibatkan kaedah pemerhatian secara langsung terhadap sampel kajian dan analisis dokumen. Dapatan kajian dianalisis secara deskriptif secara peratusan. Sampel kajian ini melibatkan seramai 28 orang murid tahun enam dari Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Jejawi, Teluk Intan, Perak. Tema bagi pelaksanaan PBMBP ini ialah “Pertanian dan Penternakan” berdasarkan buku teks Bahasa Melayu. Dapatan kajian mendapati semua kemahiran iaitu mendengar dan bertutur, dan membaca dan menulis mencatatkan purata peratus kenaikan tahap penguasaan murid yang terlibat. Melalui analisis dokumen yang dilakukan, kebanyakan murid dapat menghasilkan rumusan, memindahkan maklumat ke dalam bentuk grafik, menghasilkan karangan berformat dialog dan menghasilkan lirik lagu untuk dipersembahkan secara didik hibur. Kesimpulannya, PBMBP dapat meningkatkan tahap penguasaan murid dalam kemahiran berbahasa kerana mengutamakan kemahiran berbahasa sebagai medium proses penghasilan produk. Selain itu, PBMBP juga dapat memotivasikan murid untuk belajar secara aktif dan memupuk kerjasama ahli kumpulan untuk membantu rakan yang kurang mahir dalam kemahiran berbahasa melalui kaedah bantuan (scaffolding) selari dengan konsep konstruktivisme serta memberi keseronokan sewaktu belajar dalam kalangan murid kerana pada akhir projek dipersembahkan secara didik hibur melalui seni bahasa. Project-based Malay language learning (PBMBP)is an approach that emphasises language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, based on the process of producing products. This action research involves four stages of implementation: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research instrument consists of direct observation of the study sample and document analysis. The research findings are analysed descriptively in percentages. The study sample comprises 28 sixth-grade students from Sungai Jejawi National School, Teluk Intan, Perak. The theme for the PBMBP is based on the Malay language textbook \"Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.\" The findings indicated the pupils improved proficiency levels for listening and speaking, reading, and writing skills. Document analysis found that most pupils could produce summaries, convert information into graphical form, create dialogue-based essays, and compose song lyrics for entertaining presentations. PBMBP enhances pupils’ language proficiency by prioritising language skills as a medium for product generation. The students need help writing ideas, even in the introductory paragraph. Mind mapping strategy could help students develop ideas by forming wh-questions using identified keywords. Hence, this research is conducted to determine the evidence of a mind-mapping strategy in extending ideas for writing introductory paragraphs in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) Writing Task 2 (Extended Essay). Also, it intends to explore the students’ steps in the mind-mapping strategy to extend ideas in the introductory paragraph writing process. The research design is a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach where data were gathered through a needs assessment survey, diagnostic tests, and semi-structured interviews. Process writing activities were designed as a treatment after the survey, and pre-test scores supported the necessity to employ the mind-mapping strategy to the experimental group. Conversely, a control group was formed to contrast the strategy with free writing activities. Test scores of the two groups after eight weeks of the treatment were compared using Klimova’s (2014) writing components. The diagnostic pre and post-test scores on ideas extension showed evidence of the strategy. The qualitative findings also augmented the strategy’s usefulness in five aspects: 1) as an idea generation strategy; 2) using keywords and wh-questions; 3) clear step-by-step processes; 4) improved idea development; and 5) the importance of a good beginning. Further study could expand the strategy’s advantages in idea extension and content paragraph organisation for the MUET writing tasks and other essay writing processes.","PeriodicalId":208911,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language Education and Applied Linguistics","volume":"119 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139307839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such objects may be unique to one culture or communicated by several cultures. In literature, there is a wide range of CSIs, but editors may have difficulty translating them. This investigation emphasizes what editors might encounter in the translation procedures of CSIs found in a short story entitled “Sunshine in the Rain: A Maid's Courage”. The differences between the source English language and target Arabic language texts present difficulties in various transcription procedures. It is worth noting that the researcher was able to successfully translate many CSIs into foreign dialects through this book. Thus, the current paper addresses the gap issue that translators face when translating some culturally specific texts or statements from English into Arabic. The book was selected because it tells a cultural story in three languages: Malay, English (the public tongue), and Tagalog (the Filipino language). To better know these methods, the Arab writer community gains knowledge and utilizes Newmark's models to translate analyses based on theory, which hires seven procedures of CSIs to be translated processes inspected and discussed. The outcome proved that literal translation was a majority typically utilized technique (17.6%), followed by modulation (16.3%) and paraphrasing (12.6%), with other procedures such as naturalization, couplets, notes, additions, and glosses being avoided. Certain research conclusions, as well as information provided by translators, translation researchers, and students, may assist a translator knowledgeable in paying more attention to CSIs. By means of translating a variety of things, you can guide them to improve one's elaboration skills and expand their cultural languages.","PeriodicalId":208911,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language Education and Applied Linguistics","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139319074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A quasi-experimental design was adopted to identify the cause-and-effect relationship between the teaching of oral communication strategies and the participants’ use of those strategies. Hence, an English-speaking task was administered twice to a group of seven undergraduate engineering students who, through snowball sampling, were non-randomly chosen from the engineering faculty at the aforementioned university. In-between the two phases of the speaking task, a four-hour training session on the use of oral communication strategies was conducted. Data were then collected through the participants’ responses to the spoken task and were transcribed and coded according to Tarone’s communication taxonomy. Using an independent sample t-test to analyse the data, the findings revealed a statistically significant increase in the participants’ use of oral communication strategies after the training. This implies that teaching oral communication strategies is impactful in improving the participants’ English-speaking competence. The research is concluded with a recommendation for further studies with large samples for more generalisable findings. This research will inform language education policy makers of the need to heighten second language learners’ and teachers’ awareness of oral communication strategies use via their incorporation in the language curriculum.","PeriodicalId":208911,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Language Education and Applied Linguistics","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139318988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Orang Asli Jakun community, which is famous for practicing traditional lifestyles, is seen to be more open to accepting the practice of mixed marriages, which is increasingly practised nowadays. Therefore, the tendency of mixed marriage children not using the Malay language in daily communication is worrisome. Thus, this research applied Fishman's Domain Analysis Theory to assess the language selection and Malay language proficiency of mixed marriages chidlren of the Orang Asli Jakun, focusing only on the family domain. Qualitative researcg design was employed to obtain data through three methods, namely literature review, questionnaire and interview protocol. Fourteen (14) family-related terms were listed to examine the children's language selection. The results revealed that these children in Bukit Ibam preferred to use Malay language as the main language of communication compared to Jakun language. Despite their importance, adjectives remain under-researched in comparison to other lexical categories, and their use in print media such as newspapers and magazines has received limited attention. This study aims to identify the types and functions of adjectives in The Star newspaper and Reader’s Digest magazine headlines, focusing on their semantic categories and syntactic functions based on the classification framework proposed by Biber, Conrad, and Leech. Data were collected through textual analysis of 20 print media samples, comprising The Star newspapers and Reader’s Digest magazines. Adjectives were sorted according to semantic categories and further classified based on their syntactic functions in headlines. A total of 651 adjectives were identified in 574 headlines from The Star newspapers, with 426 functioning as descriptors and the remaining 225 as classifiers.
