Middlebox platforms, however, are closed systems and expensive. In turn, Network Function Virtualization (NFV) allows to deploy packet-processing middleboxes as virtual network functions, and to decouple the function from the physical realization. In this paper, we address the challenge of efficiently chaining virtual network functions. We propose and compare four heuristics for allocating virtual network functions over a network topology. Our proposal focuses on a greedy algorithm that allocates on demand a sequence of virtual network functions. We compare our four heuristics: (i) minimum introduced latency between source and destination nodes; (ii) minimum resource usage on the network nodes; (iii) the most central nodes first; and (iv) weighted decision between minimum latency and resource usage. We simulate our proposal over a real network topology, and the results show that we allocate 53% more requests when using the resource usage heuristic, and we reduce into 52% the average delay when using the latency heuristic.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131573968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The name “Morphware” comes from the Greek word to morph meaning to transform. The solution allows a network to transform itself in real time depending on the mission that has to be performed. Morphware networks can be seen as an evolution of hardware and software networks. The revolution brought by Morphware is the ability to create evolving networks that adapt automatically according to conditions (e.g., emergencies, spontaneous events) and customer needs (security, privacy, QoS, applications). We call it the Plug & Network concept. Morphware as a platform will enable the introduction of new use cases and accelerate innovation in networking.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130933583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is widely used in applications such as instant messaging and it is finding place in innovative solutions such as smart homes. Recent growth in the number of end-users requires the presence service to be scalable in order to handle the increasing load. Overprovisioning of the resources to handle the unanticipated load leads to inefficient usage of resources. Moreover, because of the inherent dynamicity of end-user demands, resources need to be managed in an elastic manner, allowing the efficient usage of available resources. The traditional presence service architecture lacks the ability to cope with the aforementioned challenges. Cloud computing serves as an emerging paradigm in overcoming those challenges. In this paper, we present a case study for a presence service in the cloud, consisting of three components: A stateless front end, a repository and a cache component to support the front end for quick data access. Besides, we build prototype and evaluate its performance. The lessons learned from the evaluation are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"50 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132355527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many factors that encourage NFV employment but some particular requirements must be carefully evaluated, such as choosing the virtualization technology. This paper provides a performance analysis of two open source virtualization solutions, KVM and Docker, in an HTTP proxy scenario. Our results show that Docker process HTTP requests in a lower time than KVM, due to its lightweight virtualization. Moreover, based on the results, we provide a broad discussion about each virtualization solution applied to NFV environments.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121452015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the significant gap between business and residential customers, a large body of literature measurements is performed at higher observation points and only few studies have examined residential traffic characteristics. Furthermore, traffic analysis granularity is often too coarse to tackle observed growth of applications and services. In this paper, we present a fine-grained analysis of a real residential traffic dataset collected in France and provided by a major ISP involving more than 40,000 customers. Our findings provide useful insights of usage patterns, applications distribution and traffic characteristics. Among these findings, HTTP and SSL traffic accounts for more than 73% of total data volume. Also, YouTube generates almost 70% of real time entertainment flows.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121522018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Until now, research on crowdsensing mainly focused on scenarios with devices such as smartphones with huge memory and high computive skills. With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), crowdsensing can be envisaged with other constraints. Indeed, some IoT nodes are mobile but with limitations about storage and processing capabilities, then connectivity disruptions might occur between the nodes. These issues are tackled by a Disruption Tolerant Networking architecture. In this article, we focus on a subset of IoT, Mobile Sensing Networks (MSN). We propose then, a mechanism which respects the constraints of the nodes and maintains high performance. This mechanism, the multi-level FREAK, uses the mean frequency of contacts with the destination. The metrics drives the transmission. Since some nodes might not meet the destination nor nodes meeting the destination, we had the idea of a multi-level metrics to allow these “disconnected” nodes to transmit data to the destination. We evaluate our proposal through simulations based on several real mobility traces. Our solution outperforms reference replication and quota-based DTN solutions.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125575617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a real challenge for mobile network operators because the cellular base stations will be overloaded. One promising solution to offload mobile traffic from the base stations is the use of Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. Each mobile phone can use both cellular and Wi-Fi network interfaces to download video segments either from the Internet or from a neighboring device. However, it is crucial to improve the reliability of D2D communications to maximize the offloading benefits. In this paper, we use network coding to address the reliability in cooperative D2D-based transmission of video streaming. We have implemented Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) on the CoopStreaming system and evaluate the offloading gain. The experimental results show that the use of network coding has significantly improved the reliability of D2D communications among neighboring devices and therefore increased the cellular offloading gain.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127627007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When properly crafted, this data can be used as an important source of information about human behavior. In this paper, we use a vehicular social network aiming to evaluate the impact of external factors from vehicular environments on users' contributions to social networks. Results from a publicly available Waze dataset show that users are mostly motivated to post traffic jam information and that they do it during rush hours on weekdays and during the afternoon on weekends. We also observe that users who receive low reliability on their posts tend to keep low scores in the following. Finally, results additionally indicate that users at higher speeds do not contribute to the network and that posts experiencing longer delays until published are poorly evaluated.","PeriodicalId":208097,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Conference on the Network of the Future (NOF)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115748182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
