For this purpose, miscellaneous user information must be collected and structured into user profiles. These profiles offer the advantage of being easily enriched and exploitable by the environment, in order to deliver to the user, at any moment and at any place, the best fitted service, with regard to his activity. In this paper we present an ontology-based user profile model which provides the static data about a user but also the context of the user in a given situation in real time.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124610692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, emphasis is laid on Interactive Evolutionary processes, by presenting a Weighted Mutation Interactive Genetic Algorithm, followed by its thorough investigation and discussion. This computational structure provides the user with the capability of deeply integrating into a strictly defined evolutionary procedure, while guiding the morph genetic development with respect to personal and intuitive decisions. Reference is also made to Gordon Pask's Theory of Conversation, which appears to serve as a suitable conceptual tool to further explore the proposed algorithm's capacities. It is finally suggested that the presented process favors the creation of a symbiotic, circular relationship between the user and the computer, forming a scheme which can be potentially generalised and implemented in different, multiple ways.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124141985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been an increasing interest in this subject to help the elderly and disabled people to live alone in their own homes with little help and support from their carer. Similarity and dissimilarity measures have been applied for a wide range of pattern recognition tasks such as character recognition, image retrieval, etc. In this work, the binary similarity and dissimilarity indices are used on data generated from occupancy sensors including door and motion sensors in a smart home. These sensors indicate the presence and absence of the occupant in a specific area in the home. Many measures are introduced in the literature, the focus in this paper is on the measures that give credits to both the positive matches and the mismatching between two sensor values. This paper first gives an overview of the similarity measures to find the most common patterns and then dissimilarity or distance measures are used to identify unexpected or abnormal data. Data from two different case studies are used to validate the accuracy of these measurements.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131747823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But the whole context, including psychological, and social aspects, have to be considered if we wish to make our technology resonating with user's real needs. The paper shows, how may rational choice theory and cognitive science contribute to describe and understand the mental processes which occupy user's mind during the appropriation stage of technology evaluation. As a main contribution, we present a simple model of appropriation, both verbally and in a semi-formal numerical form. Even though we are focused primarily on ambient intelligence, the model is generic enough to be applied in other fields too. The model implies, besides else, that enthusiasm induced by an early evaluation does not necessarily raise chances of success in the following appropriation stage.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132229296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The difference from a conventional passive approach is that strategically located elements of the system provide controlled output energy (actuators) in order to manipulate actively the internal flow of forces and stresses. In this way stresses can be homogenized and deflections kept within desired limits. The alternative we are proposing offer a way to actively counteract loads when needed. Two dimensional pin-jointed trusses designed using this methodology show that substantial weight savings can be achieved respect to optimised \"passive\" structures (designed using Fully Utilised Design method).While the decrease in mass through actuation leads to reduction of embodied energy, it increases the operating energy that the active elements need to provide. Whole life energy analysis, implemented as coupled optimization between embodied and operating energy, reveals that an optimal trade-off exists. Results show that energy savings remain significant even considering the operating energy of the actuators for the entire life-cycle of the structure.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116308329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are designed to recognize meaningful expressions of hand motion. In our daily lives, we use our hands for interacting with the environment around us in many tasks. Our glove-based gesture recognition is focused on developing technologies for studying the motion and interaction with a data glove which can augment the capabilities of some users to perform some tasks. This idea is relevant to many research areas, for example: design and manufacturing, information visualization, robotics, sign language understanding, medicine and health Care. In this paper, we proposed a new concept grounding approach for glove-based gesture recognition. We record the data from finger sensors and then abstract and extract concepts from the data. This allow us to construct conceptual levels which we can use to study interaction and manipulation for users during their activities.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125021809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demonstration shows a future production scenario spanning several linked stages ranging from individual ordering over assembly, filling, and shipping to individual support and comprises in total 5 demonstrators from 5 partners. Visitors could order and configure their own product and how to ship. Products which were produced in this scenario were equipped with a so-called digital product memory. Via this digital product memory data is collected along the product life cycle from individual ordering, assembling, filling to shipping. At home the user could browse the digital product memory and benefit from individual services which build up on the digital product memory.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122831230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The overall goal is to assist people by exploring the content, linking new information to their own knowledge, and providing related information. Therefore, we investigate the entire process: a) identifying the users information need, b) collecting the needed information, and c) displaying the collected information. First, we examine methods to recognize the users information needs. We then illuminate the various external information sources with their great amount of diverse information types. Due to the high variety of external sources, we focus on scientific publications. The objective is to provide adequate scientific publications related to the context within the intelligent environment. The investigation described here also requires to consider privacy issues. We depict the selection of the displaying device.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"351 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115972191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel sensor system has been built containing an in-ear microphone and a reference microphone integrated in a hearing aid case in order to record chewing and swallowing sounds in the ear canal and environmental noise, respectively. Using manual labeled records of the food intake sounds of 40 participants we developed an algorithm to detect food intake activity in sound data. In recent years, continuous progress has been made and the technology has reached a level where the deployment becomes feasible on a larger scale and in everyday settings, raising the question where the central system should be deployed. In this paper, we propose the use of existing entertainment systems as the Smart Home controller. In a case study we examine the performance of the multi-core Cell processor of the Sony PlayStation 3 for training artificial feed forward neural networks using specifically adapted parallel training strategies. The evaluation of these strategies shows a gain in speed of up to 6.6 over a sequential implementation on a single processing element of the Cell. Based on these findings and related work we suggest that home entertainment systems should be considered as possible powerful, deployment platforms for future Smart Home systems.","PeriodicalId":207140,"journal":{"name":"2011 Seventh International Conference on Intelligent Environments","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126955884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
