The first considers education itself, that is, the gradual process of learning and accumulating general and special knowledge, aimed at discovering and exploiting the abilities of every individual. The second refers to the religious moral education based on the same principles, but which has a more noble goal, namely, to cultivate and develop a person’s spiritual qualities in view of their social integration and the establishment of normal interpersonal relationships. \u0000In this essay, I set out to show that within the general framework of the elementary education process, which takes into account the age and training of every individual, religious-moral education has always had a predominant role in society because it makes the junction between material, natural aspirations and the spiritual that are as important as the former. A human being is a microcosm in which two worlds, apparently contradictory but fully compatible, meet, namely, the human and the divine, body and soul, earth and heaven. \u0000My analysis considers the experience of Saint John Chrysostom, whose pedagogical principles, although based on strategies specific to the religious domain, are not in disagreement with the methods of modern pedagogy, because both pursue the finality of the educational act. This short essay intends to show the impact that the reformation has had on the Orthodox Romanians in Transylvania, who, although a numerical majority, were not recognized as a nation though their faith enjoyed certain tolerance. The episode that we will examine here takes place in the early part of the XVII century during the time of Prince Gabriel Bethlen. Under the pretext of the so-called religious, cultural, and even national emancipation of the Romanians, he proposed their conversion to Calvinism. In this regard, he asked for help from the ecumenical Patriarch Cyril Lucaris, an unusual hierarch for his time, flexible and firm at the same time, who was open to dialogue with other Christian denominations. Just as the understanding of the relationship between the natural sciences and theology has developed due to the growth of methodological self-awareness of these disciplines, especially regarding their temporality, a similar progress could be expected in the research on relationship between theology and the historical sciences. It seems that the topic still needs to be synthesized on the ground of fundamental theology. For the theologian, a hermeneutical point of reference on the issue under discussion, can be the ruling of the Second Vatican Council in the 36th paragraph of the Constitution Gaudium et Spes. The temporality of theology features at least three dimensions: God’s Revelation occurrence in time, the occurrence in time of scientific reflection on this Revelation, and the dependence of the understanding and interpretation of both on the data provided by the historical sciences. What is more, it is postulated that analyses conducted as part of theological research should take into account the achievements of other fields of knowledge and use the research methods and techniques they have developed. This is primarily because theology, and especially pastoral theology, must refer to other sciences, especially sociology, to solve certain research problems. Using sociological methods and techniques primarily requires diagnosing the current pastoral situation. With these methods, first credible conclusions and then realistic postulates can be formulated. The formulated postulates have a real value as they are based on confronting and verifying models, content, methods and forms used. The goal of this article is to present the main paradigms in the field of theology that require sociological research and then detailed sociological methods and techniques used in pastoral research. A specialist, technical knowledge of sociological measurements and praxeological interpretation of empirical data will be presented concerning the latter issue.
