However, there is an inherent trade-off between the number of active beams and the complexity of generating a large number of beams. This paper formulates and solves a joint beam placement and load balancing problem to carefully optimize the satellite beam and enhance the link budgets with a minimal number of active beams. We propose a two-stage algorithm design to overcome the combinatorial structure of the considered optimization problem providing a solution in polynomial time. The first stage minimizes the number of active beams, while the second stage performs a load balancing to distribute users in the coverage area of the active beams. Numerical results confirm the benefits of the proposed methodology both in carrier-to-noise ratio and multiplexed users per beam over other benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132438980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To simplify the decoder architecture, we enforce a strict prefix constraint on the codewords. We develop a data compression architecture that provably achieves a near minimum time-average expected bitrate for a fixed constraint on the LQG performance. The architecture conforms to the strict prefix constraint and does not require time-varying lossless source coding, in contrast to the prior art.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131533888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, security is still one of the main challenges when sharing resources. In this paper, we study how WireGuard can provide an encrypted Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel as a service between network functions in 5G setting. The open source management and orchestration entity deploys and orchestrates the network functions into network services and slices. We create multiple scenarios emulating a real-life cellular network deploying VPN-as-a-Service between the different network functions to secure and isolate network slices. The performance measurements demonstrate from 0.8 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps throughput and below 1ms delay between network functions using WireGuard. The performance evaluation results are aligned with 5G key performance indicators, making WireGuard suited to provide security in slice isolation in future generations of cellular networks.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132733014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Application in data centers can use Virtual Machines (VMs) to provide efficient utilization of the physical resources. This paper investigates the impact of VM placement on the energy-efficiency in a PON-based data center architecture that utilizes cascaded Arrayed Waveguide Grating Routers (AWGRs). In this paper, we develop a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization model to optimize the VM placement in the proposed PON-based data center architecture. This optimization aims to minimize the power consumption of the networking and computing by placing the VMs and their demands in the optimum number of resources (i.e., servers and networking devices) in the data center. To date, we consider three objective functions in our optimization framework: 1) an objective function that serves the VM requests randomly, 2) an objective function that only minimizes the processing power consumption, and 3) an objective function that jointly minimizes processing and networking power consumption. The results showed that the total power consumption can be reduced by up to 50% when performing the joint minimization of processing and networking power consumption compared to the random VM allocation approach. In addition, a reduction in the networking power consumption by up to 74% can be achieved when performing joint minimization of processing and networking power consumption compared to considering the minimization of the processing power consumption only.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129515316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of the IoT is the creation of smart environments and self-aware things that help to facilitate a variety of next generation services. Huge volumes of data are expected to be collected by the connected sensors/things, which in traditional cases are processed centrally by large data centers in the core network that will inevitably lead to excessive trans-portation power consumption as well as added latency overheads. Instead, fog computing has been proposed by researchers from industry and academia to extend the capability of the cloud right to the point where the data is collected at the sensing layer. This way, primitive tasks that can be hosted in IoT sensors do not need to be sent all the way to the cloud for processing. In this paper, we propose energy efficient embedding of generic smart services over a cloud-fog network using a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization model. We exploit virtualization in our framework to abstract Machine learning (ML) services that have multiple interconnected components such as Deep Neural Networks (DNN) layers. The different layers are composed into a set of VMs interconnected by virtual links. We study the single VM allocation solution and the multiple VM allocation solution at the IoT layer. The results showed that the latter solution is far more superior as a maximum power saving of 65% can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"4 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125627434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of these ML applications employ centralized learning (CL), which brings significant overhead for data trans-mission between the parameter server and vehicular edge devices. Federated learning (FL) framework has been recently introduced as an efficient tool with the goal of reducing transmission overhead while achieving privacy through the transmission of model updates instead of the whole dataset. In this paper, we investigate the usage of FL over CL in vehicular network applications to develop intelligent transportation systems. We provide a comprehensive analysis on the feasibility of FL for the ML based vehicular applications, as well as investigating object detection by utilizing image-based datasets as a case study. Then, we identify the major challenges from both learning perspective, i.e., data labeling and model training, and from the communications point of view, i.e., data rate, reliability, transmission overhead, privacy and resource management. Finally, we highlight related future research directions for FL in vehicular networks.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125183369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
