Recent studies indicate AdvantEDGE as an interesting emulation platform to investigate these challenges. The paper presents a particular example of AdvantEDGE usage. A testbed composed of the emulated 5G-MEC architecture and the VideoLAN application allows to analyse the performance of alternative handover strategies, developed by using a multi-objective approach. The study shows how AdvantEDGE allows a deep analysis of the behaviour of the different strategies during the emulated user mobility, giving the possibility of measuring performance parameters at different layers, i.e. IP, application, and end-user.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129463229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ever evolving natural language is full of abstraction, pop-culture reference, and metaphor. Rigid language understanding implementations in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems like voice assistants often lead to misunderstanding in command execution, degrading the user experience and accuracy of AI applications. Further, the inability for AI to have an understanding of the data in reference to itself limits its ability to fully comprehend conversation. Theorized Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) aids this problem through enabling cognitive data processing. This paper presents a novel method of training an AGI system through a peripheral interface using online news articles to increase its understanding of data in reference to current societal culture while heightening its overall awareness.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124100964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Serverless computing is an emerging cloud computing paradigm that provides stateless and event-driven services, called serverless services, independent of network infrastructure. Further improvements in quality of service (QoS) can be achieved by utilizing novel concepts like edge-serverless computing. Analyzing such systems as in existing works requires network-level simulations which could be costly and time-consuming, thus analytical models to obtain rapid insights are also needed. In this paper, we propose a stochastic geometry-based mathematical model in a tiered network, characterizing average end-to-end delay as performance measure, impacted by various crucial network parameters. The spatial distribution of server nodes, as well as computation requests are randomly and independently distributed according to homogeneous Poisson point processes (PPPs), allowing us to study the performance gains from multiple aspects. Two distinct network topologies are investigated numerically, namely communication and computation-oriented, validating the accuracy of our theoretical approximations.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"50 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116339649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the limited communication resources in wireless networks, only a subset of clients are allowed to communicate their model updates with the central server in each communication round. Existing works selected the client based on the wireless channel states or the size of local dataset, while ignoring the local model status, i.e., the content of the local updates. In this paper, we first provide a comprehensive convergence analysis to investigate the impact of the client selection strategy for FL in wireless networks. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a novel client selection approach, referred to as the content-aware client selection (CACS). The proposed CACS strategy selects the client subset based on both the wireless channel states and the content of model updates from the clients. Empirical experiments shall verify the analysis and demonstrate that the CACS strategy outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both the convergence speed and learning performance of FL in wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116236797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A health status verification of a specific targeted service will be deployed to confirm the current situation if an attack was in progress. A test bed has been developed to test the proposed adaptive framework and the result showed an average detection rate of 98.16%. The average false positive rate was 1.85%, which is very low considering to the size of dataset inspected. Applications such as ve-hicle platooning benefit from sidelink communications to fulfill stringent latency requirements at the cost of uncertainty in the reliability due to the multiple access interference. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to model the performance of C-V2X sidelink communications in a vehicle platooning scenario, depending on the available resources, the number of interfering vehicles and their relative positions. A Nakagami-Lognormal composite channel model is assumed, and the moment matching approximation (MMA) is used to approximate the statistics of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Compared to existing simulation studies in the literature, the proposed model offers a compact, yet accurate, approximation of the achievable performance in terms of packet success rate, and allows for planning and adapting the configuration and parameters setup of the vehicle platoon.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125177507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optical Transport Networks (OTN) are being deployed as one attractive supporting technology for 5G networks at the transport level, particularly for next generation transport networks featuring large-granule broadband service transmissions. However, adopting and deploying OTNs in 5G networks comes with its own set of challenges. Thus, for carrier networks based on optical paths to become more scalable, dynamic, and manageable, there is a need to account for incoming traffic characteristics. To that end, this work formulates the problem of traffic-aware OTN-over-WDM optimization in the context of 5G. More specifically, it studies the impact of the different 5G traffic types and environments on the cost at both the OTN and WDM layers. Simulation results using different network topologies show the higher cost associated with more demanding traffic types and the variation in aggregate costs for different environments/scenarios. This includes a 2x increase in the aggregate network cost per layer and a 1.2x increase in average network cost per demand per layer and average network cost per demand per demand type between the different topologies. Additionally, results show that the optimization model outperforms a recent previous work by almost a factor of 2.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121058557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) offer low latency services to remote users. In the context of Edge Computing, these virtualized services are hosted in Edge Clouds, which, however, have limited resources. Embedding the Network Slice requests from users is a challenging problem, and demands distributed solutions in the presence of resource and delay constraints in the Edge Network. This paper introduces a distributed delay-aware service discovery mechanism, which performs cache-based forwarding, trying to efficiently discover VNFs in the Edge Clouds (ECs) and enable Cross-Slice Communication (CSC); that is the sharing of common VNFs between different Network Slices (NSes). Furthermore, the distributed NS embedding (NSE) problem is addressed by a modified k-Shortest Path (k-SP) approach to minimize the total round-trip network delay under the capacity constraints of the underlying infrastructures. The proposed method significantly decreases the execution time by 70% to provide the distributed NSE solution compared to the baseline k-SP algorithm.","PeriodicalId":206258,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Mediterranean Conference on Communications and Networking (MeditCom)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114880804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
