Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most frequently performed bariatric procedures. It is characterized by high efficiency in reducing excessive body weight, however, it carries a risk of complications, including nutritional deficiencies. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess energy intake and selected nutrients within 6 months after sleeve gastrectomy. Material and methods. The study included a group of 48 obese people undergoing laparoscopic cuff gastrectomy. The way of feeding patients before surgery as well as 3 and 6 months after the surgery has been evaluated. The quantitative assessment of daily food rations (dfr) has been conducted using a 24-hour nutritional interview, covering 3 days preceding the study (the assessment did not include supplementation). The energy and nutritional value of menus have been calculated using the computer program Dieta 5. Statistical analysis of the data has been conducted using the Statistica 12 software. To compare the data in individual periods, the t test for independent variables has been used. The study has been approved by the UMB Bioethics Committee no. R-I-002/525/2010. Each from patients, voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. Results. After 6 months the energy supply with diet decreased significantly and amounted to 713.15 ± 232.36 kcal/day in the group of women and 972.68 ± 200.48 kcal/ day in the group of men. In addition, in both groups there has been a significant reduction in the average consumption of protein, fat, carbohydrates, dietary fiber and vitamins: B1, C, A, E and folic acid as well as Fe, Mg and Zn, which was insufficient in relation to the demand. Conclusions. Patients’ diet in the early postoperative period is characterized by a very low energy value and is deficient in protein, complex carbohydrates, some minerals and vitamins. Therefore, it seems reasonable to introduce a routine supplementation with a highprotein preparation, a multivitamin preparation, a calcium preparation and vitamin D for each patient undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy, while monitoring the supply of individual nutrients with the diet.","PeriodicalId":206045,"journal":{"name":"Postępy Nauk Medycznych","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128072160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The incidence of its occurrence is constantly increasing. It is estimated that worldwide in 2016 650 million adults were obese (1). Attempts of conservative treatment of morbid obesity often do not bring the desired results, therefore, patients are reffered for surgical treatment. It has been proven that bariatric surgery is the most effective method of therapy for obese patients, however, it is subject to a number of complications. Specialistic treatment in pre-operative care may reduce the risk. Dietetic preparation seems to be particularly important. Its main purpose is to change previous eating habits, reduce body mass, compensate nutritional deficiencies and nutritional education in terms of required changes in the diet after bariatric surgery. The PubMed and Medline database were searched (manuscripts published from 2000 to 2018). The keyword used in the electronic serach included: “bariatric surgery”, “nutrition”, “diet”, “dietary recommendations”, “nutritional status”, “preoperative low calorie diet”. Adequate nutritional preparation of the patient affects the course and effectiveness of surgical treatment.","PeriodicalId":206045,"journal":{"name":"Postępy Nauk Medycznych","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127815058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beneficial effect of intragastric balloon (IGB) on weight loss and obesityrelated complications is still questionable and may be related to serum hormonal changes. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the safety and benefits of IGB therapy associated with hormonal changes in peripheral blood. Material and methods. This was a prospective, observational study of 25 obese patients treated with an IGB with assessment of safety, weight loss, gastroesophageal reflux, serum laboratory tests, and circulating leptin and omentin. The consent of bioethical committee of Medical University of Bialystok, as well as written consent from all subjects were obtained. The study was supported by the Polish National Science Center grant No. N N402 456839. Results. A six-month IGB therapy resulted in a significant BMI decrease. The mean % total body weight loss at 6 months was 15.55 ± 8.96 and did not significantly change at 12 months. A 25% excess weight loss was achieved by 52 and 56% patients at 6 and 12 months, respectively. The therapy decreased mean levels of aminotransferases, glucose, C-reactive protein, hemoglobin A1c, and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Patients with % excess weight loss less than < 25 had significantly higher levels of leptin and lower levels of omentin. Leptin levels correlated with HOMA-IR, insulin, and alanine aminotransferase levels. Omentin levels correlated positively with HDL-cholesterol and negatively with alanine aminotransferase. Reflux esophagitis was found in 5 and 3 patients before and after therapy, respectively. The frequency of typical reflux symptoms did not differ significantly before and after therapy. There were no serious adverse events except one partial balloon deflation found on the day of its planned removal. Up to 80% patients were satisfied with therapy. Conclusions. IGB therapy is a safe and effective weight loss procedure and its beneficial effects on weight loss and several serum metabolic and liver function parameters are associated with hormonal changes.","PeriodicalId":206045,"journal":{"name":"Postępy Nauk Medycznych","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129573107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Children suffering from chronic diseases requiring long-term treatment and rehabilitation are particularly responsive to therapeutic modalities involving dogs. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of dog therapy on the treatment and rehabilitation of children with autism and to assess the influence of dog therapy on behaviour and attitude changes in such children. Material and methods. The study included a group of 50 children diagnosed with autism who received dog therapy as a auxiliary treatment modality. Respondents were the children’s parents/guardians. The diagnostic survey method including an original questionnaire consisting of 22 questions relating, among other things, to the benefits and changes in the physical, psychological and social behaviour of the child resulting from the applied therapy was utilised. Results. A significant number of study participants showed positive changes in behaviour regarding each sphere of functioning. In 70% of the studied children, a decreased level of anxiety was observed in contacts with their surroundings, greater openness and trust as well as higher motivation and greater initiative in a variety of educational and therapeutic activities. Conclusions. The active involvement of a dog in the child’s development is a form of therapy and rehabilitation which has not been fully explored and appreciated. Dogs exert a positive impact on the child’s development, enhance cognitive processes and motivation, inspire the child, improve their psychosocial functioning as well as reduce stereotyped behaviours and other axial symptoms of autism. Subjective assessment and the objective results obtained in the study indicate high efficacy of dog therapy as an auxiliary method. There is a need to use and evaluate this auxiliary treatment modality in human life.","PeriodicalId":206045,"journal":{"name":"Postępy Nauk Medycznych","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126618668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
