Almost all derivatives in the Maxwell's equations are approximated by the higher order central-difference. Only second order approximation is implemented in the domain near the material discontinuities. Thus, on the domain away from the material boundary, the scheme is at least a fourth order in space and second order in time. This scheme uses the mesh stencil similar to the one used in the standard Yee cells and it is relatively easy to modify an existing code based on the Yee algorithm. Also, this scheme can be adapted for an unbounded space problem such as a scatter in an unbounded space. In this case, the Maxwell's equations are transformed to a set of auxiliary equations in a closed domain. A reflection-free amplitude-reduction scheme applied over the entire computational domain reduces the auxiliary field components outwardly and makes them equal to zero at the closed boundary. Since the relationship between the physical fields and their auxiliary counterparts is explicitly known and the former can be found from the latter with in the computational domain.","PeriodicalId":206022,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE SoutheastCon 2000. These include operating systems, computer organization and computer networking. Because of the nature of the material covered in these subjects, they must be taught using a practical approach. This practical approach can include various techniques used to present the course materials and concepts in a visual frame of reference. When using a visual approach to convey course material, both students and teachers encounter challenges. These challenges include greater monetary expense for required equipment, greater expense in terms of time to adapt the course material to a visual format regardless of the type of teaching methodology used (i.e. distance education teaching and learning). A performance evaluation of a GS-based and two classical (autocorrelation- and cepstrum-based) pitch determination algorithms was conducted on a set of wavetable-synthesized musical signals. The experiment separately evaluates the tasks of pitch detection and estimation. Pitch estimation performance is presented in terms of gross pitch errors (indicating algorithm stability) and mean-squared fine pitch error. The pitch detection performance is evaluated by a receiver operating characteristic analysis of the detection statistics. Results demonstrate that the GS-based estimator generally performs worse than the autocorrelation and cepstrum-based methods. More over access to the educational media and resources in the learning environment requires state of the art service infrastructure and commodity receiving end means for the users. Integrating the existing and emerging technologies can clearly address the needs of an effective learning environment and extend the traditional classroom setting to foster distance learning. Distance learning comprises of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Synchronous learning consists of one to one or one to many conferencing, using interactive slide show and white board. Asynchronous learning consists of access to the multimedia content of lecture material at a later time. To support such a truthful distance learning environment we have used systems-engineering approach to develop a Java based cross platform user interface to permit client/server on-line electronic file transfer. This file transfer system has been implemented and demonstrated through a sample presentation environment. The successful implementation of such a system in a synchronous and asynchronous learning environment will significantly enhance learning, and enable Tennessee State University students to take classes online.","PeriodicalId":206022,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IEEE SoutheastCon 2000. The benefit of using the control is demonstrated via a Web page that runs LSLNR- a GUI tool written in MATLAB by the authors. The recognition that any of the three transformer terminals can serve as the common terminal leads to two alternate PWM transformer models and the corresponding two alternate PWM switch models. For a given PWM DC-DC converter, one of the three PWM switch models is more \"natural\" for graphic-oriented analysis/design, e.g., it allows the idealized converter to be analyzed by inspection. Furthermore, all three PWM transformers may be used to graphically manipulate the converter circuit to a form which can be analyzed by inspection. This is demonstrated in the paper by steady-state analysis of a buck converter. In addition, the explosion in the Internet application platforms has practically rendered institutions like universities, commercial and industrial organizations to adapt the multimedia communications via the Internet. As the Internet continues to expand, a great deal of emphasis is being placed on technologies that support interactivity and/or real time transfer of data. These include CGI, Java applets, ActiveX, plugins, VRML, JavaScript, and VBScript. In addition, a lot of development work is being done in areas such as real time voice and video communication as well as streaming audio and video. The term multimedia refers to a combination of elements such as text, graphics, images, animation, audio and video. Multimedia technology finds increasing applications in numerous fields such as medicine, education, law, business, engineering, science, music, entertainment, and enhancements for people with disabilities.
