PyroGreen process has been designed so that final ILW can meet conservative acceptance criteria such as one established for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in U.S.A. The nuclide inventory of final vitrified PyroGreen waste is calculated using ORIGEN 2.1 based on the design decontamination factor of PyroGreen processes applied to 18,171 metric tons of PWR SNF with 45 GWD/MTU burnup. Using GoldSim model, the environmental impact of ILW upon geological disposal at an intermediate depth. Among radioactive nuclides, Ra226, Rn222 and Sn126 are identified as key contributors to radiological dose for general public. The environmental impact of PyroGreen wastes satisfies the Korean dose limit of 0.1 mSv/year with sufficiently high margin. Sensitivity studies have shown that the predicted dose can vary significantly by distribution coefficient of Ra226 and Rn222, solubility limit of Se79.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20431,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proche.2016.10.059","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79244616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This “EURO-GANEX” process is aimed towards the homogeneous recycling of plutonium and minor actinides in a future closed fuel cycle. The separation process is based on the co-extraction of actinides and lanthanides from aqueous nitric acid into an organic phase followed by selective co-stripping of actinides. A suitable organic phase has been formulated and distribution ratios determined for lanthanides, actinides and some problematic fission products under extraction and stripping conditions. The process flowsheet has been proven on surrogate feed solutions as well as with spent fast reactor fuel; excellent recoveries of the actinides and good decontamination factors from the lanthanides and other fission products were obtained. A variation on the EURO-GANEX flowsheet (the “TRU-SANEX” process) has now been designed to produce separate Pu+Np and Am+Cm products for heterogeneous recycling. Composition analysis of the stainless steel plate and ER308 filler rod was performed using X-ray fluorescence and SEM-EDX. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding was done on SS 304 2B plate with thick-ness of 1.2<!--> <!-->mm in Coraza Systems Malaysia Sdn. Bhd using a KADEYOU machine. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to develop mathematical relation-ships between the welding process parameters (i.e, welding current, filler size and flow rate of the shielding gas) and the output variable of the weld joint (ultimate tensile strength) to determine the welding input parameters that led to the desired weld quality. Comparison between measured and calculated results was in good agreement indicating that the developed models can predict the responses adequately within the limits of welding pa-rameters being used. High welding current (50A) cause microstructure become finer and increase in tensile strength while low current (30A) caused root of the metal plate not weld completely which weakened the joint (724.84<!--> <!-->MPa and 718.33<!--> <!-->MPa, correspond-ingly). High flow rate (14 cfh) caused tensile strength to drop (738.49<!--> <!-->MPa) due to the turbu-lence in the molten metal compared to the lowest flow rate (10 cfh and tensile 756.75<!--> <!-->MPa strength).</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20431,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proche.2016.03.096","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73829087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nanocomposites with different weight percentage of SiCNP and MWCNTs loading were fabricated by mechanical blending operation assisted with an ultrasonic cavitation technique. The loadings utilized were 0, 2, 4, and 6% of total composites weight. The result shows that the optimum filler loading of both systems were obtainable at 4% of SiCNP and MWCNTs of loadings. Composite with SiCNP filler achieved the highest value of tensile strength and Young's modulus at about 11% and 4%, respectively as compared to unfilled system. The enhancement pattern in MWCNTs nanocomposite systems were not significant as compared than SiCNP composite. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of MWCNTs composite were increased at only about 7% and 2%, respectively compared than unfilled system. The strain at break attribute for both filler system had shown reduction pattern at higher loading started from 2% loading and onwards. The variation in tensile properties were further supported by the tensile fracture morphologies and clearly shown that the filler-matrix plated an important role in affecting the tensile behavior of nanocomposite produced.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":20431,"journal":{"name":"Procedia Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.proche.2016.03.098","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72775350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High purity silica can be produced by controlled combustion after acid treatment. In this study, leaching of rice husk with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid were carried out prior to combustion to obtain purer silica. It was found that pre-treatment of the rice husk with sulfuric acid had accelerated the hydrolysis and decomposition of organic components as revealed by thermogravimetry (TG) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. In a systematic study, the combustion of un-leached, hydrochloric acid-leached and sulfuric acid-leached rice husks were performed in a muffle furnace at 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900oC for 2<!--> <!-->h.
