The biography of this Russian woman who converted to Catholicism is presented at the beginning, together with her connections with the Ultramontane environment being active in nineteenth-century France. This is to prove that de Ségur’s writing activities were part of a planned programme aimed at shaping society in the spirit of Catholicism. The analysis is carried out on the examples of how she presented scenes of a good Catholic death in three novels for children: \"Les vacances, Jean qui grogne et Jean qui rit and La sœur Gribouille\". The study is divided into three parts: the death of the mother, the death of the child, and the death of the sinner, according to the criterion whose death was described. It is shown that in de Ségur’s perspective, a good death is a reward for a good and pious life. The social aspect of death and good preparation for it are also important.","PeriodicalId":203138,"journal":{"name":"Studia Interkulturowe Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej","volume":"252 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139011478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Torn countries are those territories situated on the boundary of two different civilizations, West and East, sharing characteristics of both worlds while struggling to identify with either of them completely. While the individuals in these societies may choose one civilization over the other, their societies suffer from a significant socio-cultural difference within the civilizations, reflecting the individual as a major confusion over their identity. The best expressions of such identity struggles can be seen in the literary masterpieces of torn countries. This paper’s primary purpose is to compare Orhan Pamuk and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s selected works to identify some common themes between the two authors. Snow, İstanbul, Other Colors and Nights of Plague by Pamuk and Demons, Crime and Punishment and The Idiot by Dostoevsky form the basis of this comparison. Pamuk and Dostoevsky’s novels function as testimonials that Russian and Turkish cultural histories share many commonalities as torn countries. Comparing these authors’ selected works would allow readers to glimpse some of the themes cross-cutting Russian and Turkish cultures and show them how the two countries fared in the past two centuries against dominant political and social movements.","PeriodicalId":203138,"journal":{"name":"Studia Interkulturowe Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej","volume":"105 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139011536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the Ukrainian cultural context, the image of a wage earner in literature is classic: starting with oral folk art and fiction and ending with film images of the modern period. Instead, our study proposes to change slightly the aspect of view to the problem and to analyse it through the prism of gender and national stereotypes, highlighting the critical narratives of the history of migration and employment of women, not only Ukrainian but also Polish. This will remove some of the connotations of cross-national insults or under-appreciation and open up areas for further exploration of such narratives in film content. Stereotyped images broadcast in film material through rigid narratives are even more important for research because, on the one hand, they reflect specific structures of collective ordinary consciousness. On the other hand, they form them. It is, in particular, about the processes of the transgression of stable consciousness concepts through mass media. While analysing film images, we can trace certain constructs of narratives related to a migrant woman trying to earn money in another country. First of all, she appears as rightless, unadapted to another culture, the one who can apply for unskilled work (usually due to the language barrier and other factors), and under challenging conditions, her country is poor and does not give her opportunities; also women earn for family, that suits men completely, so there is an emphasis on the inability of some people at the expense of others, on gender stigmatisation.","PeriodicalId":203138,"journal":{"name":"Studia Interkulturowe Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej","volume":"84 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139011713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a declared monarchist, an implacable enemy of the Bolsheviks and the Soviet Union, Vojcehovskij devoted his life to fighting the communists and helping Russian emigrants. He was active in many émigré organisations, primarily in the Russian Social Committee (Rosyjski Komitet Społeczny, 1931–1944). As its head, he represented the interests of the Russian diaspora before the authorities of the Second Polish Republic and then the Third Reich. The dark side of his activity was a collaboration with Nazi Germany, with whom Vojcehovskij cooperated, counting on their help in overthrowing Stalin. The article’s main aim is to analyse Vojcehovskij’s memories (The Episodes, 1978). Their composition, structure, the principle of selection of life material, the method of self-presentation of the creator and genological heterogeneity are discussed. Vojcehovskij’s monarchist views influenced all these aspects of his memoirs.","PeriodicalId":203138,"journal":{"name":"Studia Interkulturowe Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej","volume":"538 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139011094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A metaphor in the terminology is a quite complex structure which combines the objective reality represented by its designatum and the reflection of common social-communicative practice. Combining in such a term two opposing trends – precision and explicitness, which are congruent with terminological signs from the definite sphere of science and professional practice, as well as figurativeness, indefiniteness, and vulnerability to interpretation, which are typical for the metaphor make them a sign from the border of language and speech (langue and parole). His work, which grew out of his fascination with the heritage of European culture and combines modernist searches with classicist formal discipline, is still considered a one-of-a-kind artistic proposal in contemporary Lithuanian poetry. However, the choices and fate of the poet himself can be recognised as an exemplification of the choices and fate of many artists from Central and Eastern Europe belonging to the same generation.
