Cappelle","doi":"10.2143/LB.91.3.505114","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2143/LB.91.3.505114","url":null,"abstract":"In each of these examples there is a dependency relation between the missing element, marked __, and the italicised word or words earlier in the sentence it is co-indexed with. In each example, the gap and its antecedent are separated by an intervening clause, hence the term ‘long-distance’ dependency. An alternative term is ‘unbounded’ dependency, which reflects the fact that the distance between the gap and its antecedent can in principle be made infinitely long by adding multiple intervening clauses, e.g. What do you think he told his wife his boss suspects he will try to do? The first two sentences in (1) are examples of a wh-dependency construction; (1a) is a wh-question, also called an open interrogative, while (1b) is a wh-relative. The third sentence is an example of a preposing construction. Standard generative grammar assumes that the antecedent in all three constructions originates in the position represented by the gap. In (1a), for example, the question word what is said to have been “extracted” out of that position, as a result of which it has come to occupy the leftmost position in what is analysed as a higher-ordered clause. In the minimalist program, where moves are kept as short as possible, long-distance dependencies arise through","PeriodicalId":202317,"journal":{"name":"Leuvense Bijdragen - Leuven Contributions in Linguistics and Philology","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122534228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

English had such a pronoun, but it disappeared in the 15 th century (Rissanen 1997: 517–521), so Modern English does not have a ‘man’ strategy for impersonal reference. Conversely, German, at least in the written register, very rarely uses a ‘you’ strategy of the type illustrated in (1). Dewell","doi":"10.2143/LB.93.0.2011691","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2143/LB.93.0.2011691","url":null,"abstract":"German constructions with the verb prefix be- do not just alternate with simple-verb constructions that express a \"goal\" argument obliquely; they can also contrast with simple-verb constructions in which the \"goal\" argument appears as an accusative incremental theme. By focusing on these contrasting constructions we can distinguish the semantic contribution of be- from the meaning of the transitive construction itself, enabling a cognitive-semantic account of be-verb constructions that differs significantly from previous proposals. Be- describes a sustained (and typically iterative) interaction directed at a focal accusative landmark whose existence is independent of the event being described. In the process of examining be- verbs we can also gain a better understanding of incremental themes and of \"holistic effects\". The discussion also has general implications for the semantics of argument roles, challenging the idea that semantic roles are global units that can be transported from one construction to another.","PeriodicalId":202317,"journal":{"name":"Leuvense Bijdragen - Leuven Contributions in Linguistics and Philology","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127392868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
