{"title":"ADDRESSING THE GOALS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE ARAB PRESS:","authors":"","doi":"10.33282/10.33282/abaa.v11i46.414","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33282/10.33282/abaa.v11i46.414","url":null,"abstract":"The problem of this research is:\u0000\u0000What are the sustainable development goals that received the priority in the press addressing of the newspapers under study?\u0000\u0000What are the journalistic arts adopted by these newspapers in addressing the sustainable development goals?\u0000\u0000What are the journalistic sources that Arab newspapers depended on when addressing the sustainable development goals?\u0000\u0000What are the geographic range the Arab newspapers adopted in addressing the sustainable development goals? The research is categorized into descriptive research, adopting the survey method, and using the content analysis method.\u0000\u0000The sample of research was determined by the preparation of the Arabic newspapers (Al-Sabah Iraqi newspaper, Algerian ech-chaab Newspaper, and UAE Al-Ittihad Newspaper) issued from January 1 to June 30, 2018, and extracted according to the system of regular random sample. The research tools were (Content Analysis Form).\u0000\u0000The research reached the following conclusions:\u0000\u0000The sustainable development goal: the eleventh \"sustainable local cities and settlements\" and the eighth goal \"economic growth and decent work\" and the sixteenth goal \"peace, justice and institutions\" won the priority of press treatment in the Arab newspapers in question. These goals occupied the first three ranks consecutively, after having an acceptable treatment ratio compared to other targets.\u0000\u0000Most of the SDGs were addressed by the report's technician and journalist, which is consistent with the data and results of previous scientific research, according to which the treatment of issues related to sustainable development is often done through news arts.\u0000\u0000The Arab newspapers in question obtained most of their information dealing with the sustainable development goals from their own sources, followed by academics and researchers, and the anonymous sources recorded a clear presence. Where this phenomenon, \"problem\" has not been subjected to an in-depth study to find out the causes of this media separation and its repercussions on the immigrant, whether in the problem of integration, or his opportunity to work, or adapt to live in the new society.\u0000\u0000Separation is a kind of word that is rarely used in Arabic media studies, relevant, sometimes, to the meaning of “refraining from watching TV or listening to the radio or reading newspapers”. Since the university press is a means of university media, which is issued by the departments or units of media in Iraqi universities as academic governmental-institutions, so it highlights the activities of the university and link them to its internal society in the first place as the university press is a mirror of the university and its voice is sincerely expressed. This research comes to know the extent of interest of the university press in various student issues.\u0000\u0000In order to identify the problem of the research, the method of content analysis was adopted within the survey method. The content of the news report, moreover, was analyzed in the Journal of the University of Technology for the period from 2009 to 2012. The researcher has reached a set of results, the most important of which are:\u0000\u0000The university press represented by the Journal of the University of Technology did not pay much attention to the issues of students. So, we should pay more attention to the affairs of students, because they are an effective element in Iraqi universities.\u0000The magazine focused on the scientific issues of the students more than other issues. Where scientific issues came in first place, followed by sports issues in second place, and then service issues got third place. Whereas, educational and health issues came in fourth place, and finally technical issues and other issues ranked fifth.\u0000The categories of supporting students' scientific projects and focusing on honoring top students of a total number of repetitions of scientific issues ranked first. The category of university students to practice sports ranked in the first place among sports issues. While service issues included the category of demand to provide the necessary services to students ranked first. The category of claiming to provide health care and education to students also received the first rank among educational and health issues. Among the technical cases, the category of affirmation of the students' practice of works of art was ranked first. This led to cause many shifts in the structure of its society and imposed great challenges reflected in the behavior and awareness of that society in general and youth in particular.\u0000\u0000Those changes made the Iraqi society undergoing the transformation of value and culture aspects formed a political awareness that caused cultural and political diversity within the family and society. A greater openness to the outside world caused by the communication revolution, as the world has witnessed during the past two decades, has helped in making that change. Iraq had its share of media and political openness, which were included after the US occupation in 2003. As a result, those changes left a significant impact on the electoral behavior of the family in the process of electoral participation.\u0000\u0000The research focused on studying the impact of communication on the dissemination of political awareness and the promotion of political disparity in the family and its relationship to the electoral behavior of students as a result of the exposure to various political programs and topics through the programs they prefer to follow up as a received information for both genders.\u0000\u0000The study goes further to study the match and the different visions among family members on participating in the political process; to examine the freedom of opinion between students and their families, and to discuss topics or political programs handled by means of different communication. My sample was drawn from the students of the University of Baghdad of Fourth-Year students of both branches: humanitarian and scientific.\u0000\u0000The researcher concluded that the means of communication is of great importance in spreading political awareness through various programs and topics that included the Iraqi political case, and in enriching the means of communication with the abundant information for the family members. The means of communication have helped to create different visions and ideas among members of the same family and to create a state of political disparity among family members due to dialogues and discussions between students and their families.\u0000\u0000The presence of the good educational level of the family has helped in stimulating, influencing and imparting a culture of dialogue; and added space of freedom of opinion and other’s opinions. The existence of the intersection, however, facilitated the choices of students and their families in voting. It tries to answer several questions, including those related to the levels of exposure of Iraqi university students to daily Iraqi newspapers and classification of patterns of selective exposure to daily Iraqi newspapers and the most prominent Iraqi daily newspapers that are selectively exposed by Iraqi university students. It also examines the motives of this selective exposure and factors that increase the degree of exposure to the daily Iraqi newspapers, and the most prominent stages in which Iraqi university students find their action of exposure to these newspapers.\u0000\u0000This study consists of three axes. The first concerns the systematic framework in terms of defining the research problem, objectives and methodology used. The second, the study used the curriculum survey and questionnaire tool to obtain the required data. Such role has contributed, significantly, in changing the concept and values ​​of the news. The live broadcast of the events filmed is the news itself.\u0000\u0000In the midst of the great transformations and circumstances that Iraq went through after 2003, which witnessed political and security instability, and the large increase in the number of media, especially satellite channels, in Iraq and in the world. These factors have contributed to increasing the area of ​​influence of television in the lives of Iraqis through newsletters that made influence of television as a phenomenon that occupies the attention of the public for what produces of news and information on events and phenomena.\u0000\u0000The problem of the research is that there is some sort of ambiguity, weakness or lack of clarity in the reliance of the public in Baghdad on the news as sources of information.\u0000\u0000In light of the huge increase in the number of satellite channels at all levels (Iraq, Arab, and international), and in light of the fierce competition among those channels in presenting news services and news programs, especially news broadcasts, satellite channels endeavored to achieve a scoop as events, issues and crises following up; and to assure that those events, issues and crises will be seen, daily, by the viewers; and to increase the hours of broadcasting those services and programs, around the clock. All those factors contributed greatly to increasing the interest of the public in those news broadcasts in order to understand the meaning of events. Exposure to news has become one of the communication habits of the public, which they, often, practice daily. The public, moreover, may depend on the events, circumstances and crises experienced by the world around them in order to understand the environment that surrounds them.\u0000\u0000The research problem is summarized by the following question:\u0000\u0000To what extent can the public in Baghdad rely on the news broadcasts of satellite channels as a source of information?\u0000\u0000The importance of this study lies in the study's attempt to monitor the reality of the Iraqi public's reliance, especially the audience of the city of Baghdad, as it represents all spectrums of the Iraqi people, on news broadcasts provided by satellite channels in general. {"title":"Petra University’s Students’ Uses For SMS Messages and its Verifications (A Field Study on Students of Petra University’s Colleges)","authors":"","doi":"10.33282/abaa.v6i23.295","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33282/abaa.v6i23.295","url":null,"abstract":"This study aims at identifying the extent of SMS usage and understanding the role it plays in satisfying users' needs and motivations. In order to achieve this aim, an analytical descriptive method was adopted by conducting a field survey among students at Petra University.\u0000\u0000The study resulted in many conclusions, the most important of which is that using SMS meets the students' cognitive, social and communicational needs and desires, the highest being communicating with friends at 75%, followed by exchanging songs and videos at 52%, as well as exchanging photos at 45%. In regards to their motivation for using text messaging, forgetting daily problems scored highest at 81.4% and spending free time followed at 77.4%.
