In this study, a new species of orchid mycorrhizal fungus, Serendipita officinale, is described and thoroughly studied using morphological and molecular approaches. The fungus was isolated from naturally occurring protocorms of Dendrobium officinale in Chongqing Province, China. S. officinale has been observed to actively promote the germination of seeds and facilitate the seedling development of D. officinale, forming typical mycorrhizal pelotons within protocorm cells. This species is characterized by its characteristics on PDA medium, including the presence of abundant villiform and felty aerial mycelium, uninucleate hyphal cells, and the highest growth rate in terms of colony diameter (78 mm diam. in 2 weeks). Furthermore, analyses of ITS rDNA and LSU sequences also provide additional support for the novelty of this new plant symbiont.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":20114,"journal":{"name":"Phytotaxa","volume":"16 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138956123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A significant number of the identified fungicolous taxa belong to Hypocreales. Samples were collected from Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai Provinces during an investigation on fungicolous fungi in northern Thailand. Based on morphological characteristics and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of ITS-LSU-tef1α-rpb2 and ITS-LSU-tub2-tef1α, two isolates were identified as Hypomyces sichuanensis (Hypocreaceae) and Mariannaea humicola (Nectriaceae) respectively. In the new species, striae are predominantly biseriate except for the central part of the valve, where they become uniseriate. Cymbella alexandrovichii sp. nov. is compared to 8 similar species of Cymbella that possess biseriate striae throughout the valve or only near the apices. Another species with biseriate striae—Gomphocymbellopsis guijiangensis—was included in the comparison based on the similar morphology. In addition, 3 species of Cymbella are compared to Cymbella alexandrovichii sp. nov. herein, despite lacking biseriate striation. The new species can be distinguished from similar taxa by a combination of features: asymmetric lanceolate outline with convex dorsal margin, not protracted cuneate to bluntly rounded valve ends, predominantly biseriate striae and 2–3 ventral stigmata.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":20114,"journal":{"name":"Phytotaxa","volume":"25 24","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138974859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
