Here, we present a comprehensive list of currently recognized taxa in Pachyphytum with a review of biogeographical distribution data, a spatial richness analysis, and conservation assessments based on herbarium records and field work. Pachyphytum has been documented in 11 Mexican states, with the highest concentration of species (14) occurring in xerophilous scrubland, Chihuahuan Desert, and the Sierra Madre Oriental. All species of Pachyphytum are narrow endemics and were therefore categorized as at-risk of extinction according to IUCN criteria. Currently, taxa in Pachyphytum do not have formal protected status due to lack of inclusion on Mexico’s list of endangered species. During fieldwork in preparation for this research, an undescribed Pachyphytum was encountered in Durango state, which we here describe as a new species based on a detailed morphological comparative study.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":20114,"journal":{"name":"Phytotaxa","volume":"20 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138591479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An updated analysis of morphological variation in the genus indicated that material identified as Alexa grandiflora in herbaria constituted two distinct species, one of which appeared to be new. Subsequent fieldwork further supported the distinction. Here, we describe the new species, Alexa duckeana, which differs from A. grandiflora, most notably by lacking extrafloral glands and by having shorter pedicels and shorter racemes with more congested flowers. Alexa duckeana occurs only in the southeastern region of Pará, in northern Brazil. We assess its conservation status as Endangered. In addition to the description, we provide an illustration and distribution map for the new species, taxonomic comparisons, and an identification key for the species of Alexa that occur in Brazil.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":20114,"journal":{"name":"Phytotaxa","volume":"9 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138591603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"生物学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The species is described herein based on light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ecological information of the type locality is provided. The species is characterized by linear to linear-elliptic valves with broadly rounded ends, 18–39 μm long, and 9.5–11.0 μm wide and partly biseriate striae, 16–18 in 10 μm. The species is compared with most similar taxa from other regions. Multigene phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, and SSU sequences data showed that the two isolates clustered into a separated clade in Tetraploa. This genus includes about 110 species, 44 of which occur in Brazil. In recent floristic surveys conducted within the Semi-arid region of Bahia state, Northeast Brazil, a new species of Ruehssia was recognised, which is herein described and illustrated. It resembles R. pickelii (Fontella & Morillo) F.Esp.Santo & Rapini, known from the caatinga vegetation in Pernambuco, Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte states, but has the corolla lobes adaxially pubescent (vs glabrous), corona lobes shorter than (vs as high as) the gynostegium and an exserted, conical (vs inserted and subglobose) style-head apex. The newfound species is named R. bahiensis and is known from only three locations, two within the “sisal territory” and one in the region of Feira de Santana.
