This paper presents a buck converter design optimised for a wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) PA. The design approach taken focuses on the optimization of switch sizing based on the overall power losses of the system including the output inductor losses. The converter is optimised for 20 MHz switching and output currents in the range of 200-500 mA. Experimented results are presented on the fabricated converter, with a maximum measured efficiency of 82%.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117025731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose in this paper to use the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for compensating the grid voltage dip to improve the power quality in a weak grid or asymmetrical load. The simplified active and reactive power control strategies of a 6 MVA wind farm with DFIG are described. The Maximal Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm is implemented. The simulation results using the platform between Matlab/Simulink and PLECS demonstrate the good performance of the wind farm with DFIG and STATCOM, validating the analytical conclusions.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117303505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The filter cell is demonstrated to be equivalent to a band-pass filter in the stationary frame, and is easily implemented using a multi-state-variable structure. To achieve high performance in different grid conditions, cascaded filters are developed for distorted and unbalanced grids. This paper also analyzes the robustness of the filter for small frequency variations, and improves its frequency-adaptive ability for large frequency changes. Furthermore, it is proved that this filter can also be applied for the synchronization in a single-phase system. Considering the digital implementation of the filter, four discretization methods and the resulting limitations are investigated. The effectiveness of the presented filters is verified by experiments.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128309985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For increased reliability it is also desired to achieve paralleling without intercommunication signals, using frequency and amplitude drooping methods. Problems arise when high performance inverters with very low output impedance are connected in parallel through a low impedance cable, because the classic drooping method is only valid assuming large inductive impedance between the paralleled inverters. Additionally, a large drooping amplitude coefficient needs to be used in such cases, resulting in large amplitude deviation (≫ 5%). This is a serious drawback of this method since for critical aircraft applications the typical requirement is for a maximum of 1% amplitude deviation. This paper proposes a method that allows two or more paralleled inverters to employ the principle of power sharing via drooping coefficients while still maintaining good amplitude regulation (≪ 1%) by using a variable reference that is changed in a closed loop, based on the active power, reactive power, and the measured output voltage of the inverter.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128506937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It realizes the three-level voltage waveforms before output filter, which can get a better spectrum and reduce bulk of the filter. Compared with non-isolation and low or middle frequency isolation AC-DC-AC converter, it is single stage. And compared with Buck non-isolation AC/AC converter, it can realize buck and boost output voltage. The voltage stresses of its power switches are lower than two-level Zeta AC/AC converter. A non-complementary control strategy the converter adopts can make the converter switch smoothly between different operation modes without any voltage spike. It also realizes the non-complementary control in bidirectional power flows, so the converter is suitable to different kinds of loads.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128343474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The converters are using an output filtering structure with magnetical coupling. These filtering structures are usually employed to minimize in a significant way the mass of the converters. These filters are normally sized to work with a fixed number of phases. To optimize the magnetic components, it is necessary to take into account some physical constraint, as the iron sections of the magnetic circuits and saturation problems. These problems are tricky, especially in case of the variation of the number of phase. A new control strategy is presented for interleaved and multilevel structure. Finally converter simulation results are compared with the experimental results. A 1.6kW (115V) converter realization is presented.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124603190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For reliable and efficient operation, current sensing accuracy and the current sharing performance are required. Therefore, sensing errors and mismatches should be eliminated and calibrated. On the other hand, conventional current sharing controllers are designed to force equal current sharing or current distribution between power converter phases, which may not result in the most efficient operation. In this paper, an N-Phase current sharing algorithm and controller (NCSAT) with current sensing auto-tuning capability is presented in this paper. The presented controller is able to auto-tune the current sensing and current sharing between N converter phases which results in achieving current sharing between converter phases for maximum power efficiency. It shows that either positive-sequence or negative-sequence components of three-phase unbalanced AC signals can be regulated individually in the stationary frame, while conventional and widely used resonant controllers cannot separately cope with these two sequences. Consequently, the extraction of the corresponding sequence component is not necessary for an individual sequence's control. Moreover, controllers designed for positive and negative sequences can be assigned with different gains to meet practical applications. The principle of new sequence-decoupled resonant controllers is described based on a multi-state-variable structure. In addition, the relation with conventional resonant controllers is investigated. The controllers are found to be equivalent when dealing with both sequences together. Furthermore, two examples are presented to show the application of the proposed controller. The effectiveness of the proposed new controller and its performance in the two system applications are verified by experiments.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123820860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The world's first 4.5-kV SiC p type ETO prototype based on a 0.36 cm2 SiC p type GTO shows a forward voltage drop of 4.6 V at a current density of 25 A/cm2 and a turn-off energy loss of 9.88 mJ. The low loss indicates that the SiC ETO could operate at a 4 kHz frequency with a conventional thermal management system. This frequency capability is about 4 times higher than the 4.5-kV-class silicon power devices. The numerical simulations have been carried out to discuss the potential improvement of the high voltage (10-kV) SiC ETOs. The results show that the 10-kV SiC n type ETO has much better trade-off performance than that of the p type ETO due to a smaller current gain of the internal lower (PNP) bipolar transistor in the SiC n type GTO. The experimental and theoretical studies show that the SiC ETO is a promising candidate for high-voltage (≫ 5-kV) high-frequency power conversion applications.","PeriodicalId":200366,"journal":{"name":"2009 Twenty-Fourth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123871196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
