Whereas blind people largely use feeling in everyday life, sighted person mainly focus on hearing and vision. However, haptic interface started being introduced in customers applications, such as smartphone, to propose new opportunities to users. A surface put in vibration nearby another can modify the friction coefficient measured between the two objects. This is known as the squeeze film effect. The aim of this paper is to present the optimization of a piezoelectric actuator for friction feedback. Since the computation of the Squeeze film Finite Element (FE) model is time-consuming, it is also proposed to focus only on the mechanical simulations. Indeed, a correlation between the force of the actuator and the volume swept by the travel of the vibrating surface is brought out. Finally, a couple of optimization results are presented for different topologies of actuators.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121532186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The review is intended to show trends in the evolution of these technologies in relationship with major technological breakthroughs and global events that shaped the EV and HEV industry. Electric machine types and power ratings, in addition to battery types and energy storage capacity are surveyed. A large database is then constructed and analyzed. Trends are shown to correlate well with global events and major automotive milestones with the rise and fall of different technologies. Three time periods are addressed between the first the automobile production and 2013. Future trends and expectations are then built based upon previous trends.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128939516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design starts with arrival of motor specification based on the vehicle requirements, progress with finalizing the sizing parameters and examining the aspects which affect the performance of the motor with high torque density. Skin effect, magnet demagnetization, eddy current loss, thermal stability and cycle efficiency are the main concerns which are examined. The use of strip conductors to reduce the resistance and enhance the thermal stability is also discussed. Finally, the prototype is made and the experimental results are presented.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130490637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typically, a simulation of the electrical machine behavior and its control is either time consuming or inaccurate. This paper presents a magnetic switched reluctance machine (SRM) model considering material saturation, mutual coupling, asymmetries in excitation and possible asymmetries in geometry. The machine model enables a dynamic motor simulation in combination with control and inverter. This is necessary when considering operation of special fault tolerant SRMs. Furthermore, the unbalanced stator- and rotor tooth forces due to asymmetric excitation during fault operation are calculated. The model can be used with distributed inverters and their respective control structures to effectively design suitable fault tolerant control strategies.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130715854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Predictive control algorithm can achieve fast dynamic response while avoiding overshoot. However, there is an inherent defect that it relies on the accurate mathematical model of the controlled object. An incremental predictive current control algorithm adopting an improved PWM updating strategy was presented. The relationship between system stability and parameter mismatch was analyzed using root locus method. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed incremental predictive current control algorithm shows well dynamic performance and the improved updating strategy achieves significantly increased robustness to parameter mismatch, verifying the feasibility of the methods presented.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131682133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A nonlinear Matlab/Simulink® model of the machine has been developed and used to determine dynamic behavior of SRG. SRG has been simulated in open loop with fixed conducting angle strategy in low speed range, with variable turn-on angle being basic excitation parameter. A relationship between output voltage and turn-on angle has been established. Load current is found to have significant influence on output voltage and stability. Boundaries of stable operation in open loop with respect to load current are determined. A proposed operation mode has been presented and tested in simulation and validated through experimental results.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132190248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A low cost (LC) interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) is introduced and tested. Based on the easily implementable loss model control (LMC), the controllable electrical losses which consist of copper loss, iron loss and permanent magnet (PM) loss have been minimized under optimal reference stator flux. The loss model takes into account the current harmonics produced by inverter. The nonlinear machine parameters are also considered. The accuracy of loss model is improved and verified by two dimensional (2D) finite element method (FEM). The steady-state and dynamic response and system efficiency of the proposed schemes (DTC with LMC and DTC-SVM with LMC) are validated and compared in experiment.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134276673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High-temperature superconducting components combined with cryogenic power converters will have a significant effect on electrification of transportation and high power density power conversion systems. Cryogenic power converter modules provide other promising benefits over their room temperature counterparts in terms of reduced size and weight (increased power density); improved efficiency, switching speed, and reliability. Such integration could result in significant weight and space savings for the overall system. In this paper, a review of the status of research in cryogenic power electronics and their potential applications is presented.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133288594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a method is proposed to measure the core loss in a fabricated stator of a single-sided axial flux permanent magnet machine. The core loss data in the back iron and in a single tooth are measured separately, eliminating the use of any correction factor. The core loss data measured in the fabricated stator is compared with measurements made on an identical toroid to the one from which the stator is fabricated by milling slots, before the milling operation. The purpose of his work is to get the actual core loss as accurately as possible for later loss separation research.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127696614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
