The classical approach (I) for winding losses results in eddy current losses without proximity effect but with induced currents for the passing magnetic field. The second method (II) derives the frequency dependent resistance including skin and proximity effects to calculate the winding losses due to higher current harmonics generated by pulse width modulation (PWM) excitation. The calculation of eddy currents (III) induced by higher harmonics in the magnet array is used to evaluate two different assembly strategies concerning the joule losses within the magnets. Based on the results from these three methods, final design decisions were made. A full-scale prototype in-wheel hub motor was manufactured and measured to assess the chosen design.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130746116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of Inverse methods based on the minimization of residuals between measured and calculated temperatures is therefore of great help. In this paper, the Gauss-Newton (GN) method, the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) method and the Genetic Algorithms (GA) method are used to solve this optimization problem in order to identify 10 parameters of a lumped parameter thermal model for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM).","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132399834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Differing from the two most popular conventional high frequency injection methods, i.e. pulsating voltage into estimated rotor synchronous rotating reference frame and rotating voltage into stator stationary reference frame, the new proposed strategy injects a pulsating high frequency carrier voltage into stator stationary reference frame. Then, the rotor position information can be retrieved from the rotor position dependent response current. The algorithm of the proposed strategy, compensation of cross-saturation effect and magnetic polarity detection are discussed and analyzed in this paper. The new proposed strategy has the advantage of fixed and simpler voltage signal injection, also the simpler and quicker demodulation from the response current comparing with the conventional high frequency injection methods. Furthermore, the experimental results based on an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) demonstrate that the new proposed strategy has robust magnetic polarity detection, and can achieve accurate rotor position estimation with outstanding steady and dynamic performances.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126408959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Eddy currents brakes, no precaution is taken in order to set the currents free to flow. In linear applications, Eddy current brakes are used to slow down a moving object by the produced braking force. In rotating applications, mostly braking torque is used to load a motor to be tested. In load tests, a conductive disk is attached to the rotating shaft of a motor which is placed in front of an unclosed magnetic path to permit the Eddy Current to be induced. The unclosed path consists of a magnetic yoke having poles placed on it which are surrounded by windings. Magnetic flux completes its route over the conductive disk whilst causing the Eddy currents to be induced. Eddy currents lead to a breaking torque related to magnetic coupling which is affected by a number of variables. Although the variables which are disk geometry, angular speed, material properties etc. are wellknown, the exact relation between the input and output quantities is still completely uncertain. In this paper, the effect of the change in excitation current to produce the magnetic flux is analysed for the wounded Eddy current brakes, in order to see the advantage of magnetic flux adjustment on braking torque. A previously obtained optimal design is analysed by finite elements method (FEM) for a different number of excitation currents so as to obtain the effect on output data.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116052113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, frequent voltage variations in some applications such as maximum power point tracking of solar power require a high profile voltage tracking controller. In addition, load resistance and circuit parameter variations such as inductance, capacitance and their internal resistance influence the performance of conventional controllers. This paper illustrates the design and application of a complementary model reference adaptive controller for output voltage tracking control of zeta converters. The complementary controller structure will reduce the adaptive controller's control effort to 2%-9% variation. The results demonstrate a close tracking profile with minimal control effort and elimination of the load resistance dependencies. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the high performance of output voltage tracking profile.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122525609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The control techniques based on Park's transformation, decomposing the voltages and currents into d and q axes, are not fully satisfactory when applied to such machines. For this reason, this paper proposes to realize the control of a permanent magnet generator with nonsinusoidal EMF using the “pq” or “instantaneous active and reactive power” theory. The objective is to reduce fluctuations of the generator's torque and power, and this is done by comparison between the dq and the pq control. On the other hand, the grid-side converter control is still done using the dq technique. The low voltage ride through (LVRT) requirements is considered in the design of the generator control on the case of symmetrical faults. A control technique is used in which the responsibility of maintaining the DC link voltage constant belongs to the generator-side converter and not to the network side converter as usual. Simulations using Matlab/Simulink show the effectiveness of the techniques proposed here in two cases: one where the wind turbine experiences a step increase in the wind speed and the other when a symmetrical voltage sag occurs at the network connection terminals.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122546542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ironless stator machines have been proposed in the literature due to their reduced manufacturing cost. However, in the modelling process of the aircored machines, the rotor loss calculation is generally neglected. Through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and experimental testing it has been found that rotor losses can be as high as 40% of the copper losses in an air-cored stator (ironless) low speed machine. This paper describes two methodologies to estimate the rotor losses due to eddy currents using static FEA, and the experimental data from the rotor-locked test. The equivalent resistance to predict the rotor losses can be obtained from the rotor-locked test; paying special attention to space harmonics induced due to the winding topology. Two prototypes have been analyzed: a radial and an axial flux machine. The rotor losses can be predicted with great accuracy applying the superposition principle, when the phase currents are nonsinusoidal (passive rectification).","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127769968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the dominant electromagnetic radial force directly causing vibration is calculated based on optimal operating plane, which covered by maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), current limit curve, and maximum torque per volt (MTPV) curve. Next, vibration behavior of the stator is studied by using modal and structural analysis in ANSYS workbench environment. It is observed that electric vehicle (EV) application deserves closer attention as more resonant vibration points may appear. To simultaneously meet the efficiency and NVH (noise vibration and harshness) requirements the pole-slot number and control strategy should be carefully chosen.","PeriodicalId":199452,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Electric Machines & Drives Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115239486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
