Its prevalence is high but not well known. Its clinical expression varies and its management depends on the mechanisms related to its installation. The prognosis of hyponatremia may be severe, and this severity may be due to underlying conditions, treatment related complications and time lapse before treatment is initiated. This is a prospective, descriptive, analytic, prognostic study. Patients admitted to the ICU with hyponatremia lower than 135mmol / l were included over a period of thirteen months. Several parameters were identified (demographic, anamnestic, clinical, biological, therapeutic, progression and severity scores) and compared between patients with or without hyponatremia. During the study period, 84 patients (32.60%) had hyponatremia out of the 258 who were included in our study. Hyponatremia was hypervolemic in 27.72%, normovolemic in 19.28%, hypovolemic in 51% of patients. The median duration of onset of hyponatremia acquired in the intensive care unit is 5.79 days. The mortality rate was 56% and the predicted mortality was 44% according to the APACHE II score. Some variables were significantly associated with hyponatremia: age (p <0.005), comorbidities (p = 0.02), tumor history (p = 0.001), metabolic history (p = 0.003), diabetes (p = 0.008), recent surgical history (p = 0.002), previous hepato-gastroenterological history (p = 0.017). Four variables were significantly associated with ICU-acquired hyponatremia: shock (p = 0.008), consciousness disorders (p = 0.008), APACHE II (p <0.001). In conclusion, hyponatremia is quite common in intensive care patients. Management must be rapid and include symptomatic as well as etiological treatment. Mortality is largely related to other factors and not to hyponatremia itself.","PeriodicalId":199401,"journal":{"name":"Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116568851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biological activities of the different solvent extracts was investigated on Callosobruchus maculatus in the laboratory. Adult mortality, oviposition, adult emergence, long time storage ability and germinability were used as indices. The results obtained showed that all the different extracts were potent on C. maculatus. Ethanol extract was the most toxic because it recorded 100 % mortality within 96 hours of exposure. Aqueous extract was the least toxic among the extracts because it was only able to achieve 72.75 % mortality within 96 h. The extracts caused reduction in oviposition and adult emergence. Weevils in cowpea treated with ethanol and pet-ether extracts recorded the lowest number of eggs (12.25 and 12.45 respectively) which are not significantly (p < 0.05) different from the oviposition observed in methanol, acetone and pet-ether extracts. Adult emergence in ethanol and pet-ether extracts was totally suppressed while the aqueous extract recorded the highest adult emergence among the extracts used. Ethanol and pet-ether extracts totally prevented infestation and damage of cowpea seeds within the 90 days of storage. The percentage germination of all the treated seeds was generally high, ranging from 78.50 % to 95.25 %. The highest germination of 92.25 % was recorded in ethanol extract which is not significantly different from that of methanol extract. The results from this findings showed that extracts of A. wilkesiana were effective in protecting cowpea seeds against C. maculatus. This extract can be used as sustainable substitute to chemical insecticide in the control of C. maculatus.","PeriodicalId":199401,"journal":{"name":"Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124434451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is known to be a morphogenetic trait. Reports say that Clinodactyly seems to be passed on by a single autosomal dominant gene. There is paucity of information on curvature of the little finger in the Idoma tribe of Benue State, Nigeria; hence, this study was aimed at determining the distribution of curvature of the little finger in the study population. Materials and Methods: The study was descriptive and cross-sectional in design with 401 participants recruited randomly following a multi-staged sampling method. Results and Discussion: The most frequent socio-demographic characteristics were age category 33-47yrs with 213(53.1%), male gender with 223(55.6%), Tertiary education with 239(59.6%), Married/Co-habiting 220(54.9%), and Christianity 286(71.3%). The significant socio-demographic characteristic among participants were educational level (X2 =14.090, p=0.003) and marital status (X2 =10.901, p=0.05). The proportion of participants with a curved little finger was 18.9%. In the population a large portion of them had straight little finger. Conclusion(s): The proportion of participants with a curved little finger was 18.9%. In the population a large portion of them had straight little finger. The study showed that less than a third of the sampled population had a curved little finger and the remaining two-third a straight little finger. The ratio of curved to straight little finger was 1:4.","PeriodicalId":199401,"journal":{"name":"Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123462255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, nowadays, it has been unlocked by modern processing technology, enabling them to recover economically in their natural state to produce new whey products with diverse functional properties which can be substituted with expensive ingredients such as egg white and milk proteins. Whey products have many nutritional, biological, and functional properties that make them excellent ingredients in a wide variety of food applications such as bakery products, beverages, dry mixes, infant formula, frozen desserts and ice cream, nutrition bars, dairy goods, nutritional supplements, and lactose-free products that reduce carbohydrate, fat, and calorie content, all of which are extensively covered in detail in this study.","PeriodicalId":199401,"journal":{"name":"Scholars Academic Journal of Biosciences","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133871416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
