Coleochaete nitellarum  Jost, Coleochaete pulvinata  A. Br. ex Kutz., Coleochaete soluta  (Breb.) Pringsh. belonging to the order Chaetophorales under the class Chlorophyceae were recorded in the winter season from three sites of Hooghly district in West Bengal, India. The thallus of C . nitellarum grew diffusely on the submerged angiospermic plants and consists of irregularly branched prostrate filaments. In C . soluta , the erect filaments were freely branched while, upper cells of erect filaments were cylindrical and thallus was hemispherical in C . pulvinata .  The most important finding of the limnological work was the higher concentration of DO in the lentic aquatic ecosystems where they occurred that might be due to higher rate of photosynthetic activities and lower temperature of water. This study also exhibited somewhat, lower nutrient status in respect of NO 3 -N: PO 4 3- : K ratios. The review of literatures revealed that C . pulvinata was the second time report and other two taxa were reported third timely from this state. Over exploitation of the products has reduced the economic plant taxa and led to the loss of plant species which are essential for ecosystem diversity. The availability and distribution of the 16 NTFP species studied are not uniform in the district as per the phytosociological study. They are prioritized into three categories on the basis of score attained in the devised scale. Among these, Firmiana simplex, Givotia mulaccana, and Aegle marmelos shall receive the highest conservation priority, followed by Madhuca longifolia var. latifolia, Dendrocalamus strictus at moderate level while Terminalia bellerica, Syzygium cumini and Tamarindus indica are of low category which do not require much conservation attempt. Results indicated colourless, odourless, and crystal-clear water throughout the year with air temperature ranging from 11.4-26.9 (20.3±1.1 o C), water temperature 8.4-21.5 (16±1.1 o C), water velocity 1.5-3.5 (2.5±0.11m sec -1 ), water discharge 37-92 (56±2.87L sec -1 ), turbidity 3-19 (11± 1.04NTU), pH 6.5-8.2 (7.44±0.11), electrical conductivity 35-204 (112.13±11.2µS cm -1 ), dissolved oxygen 5.9-10.5 (8.2±0.3mg L -1 ), free carbon dioxide 1.4-5.1 (3.6±0.2mg L -1 ), total alkalinity 17-97 (55.1±5.32mg L -1 ), total hardness 11-90 (47±5.06mg L -1 ), phosphate-P 0.01-0.50 (0.14±0.02mg L -1 ), ammonium-N 0.09-0.91 (0.28 ±0.04mg L -1 ), nitrate-N 0.01-0.83 (0.17±0.04mg L -1 ), relative humidity 62.4-88.7 (75.01±1.59%), rainfall 0.0-503.4 (132.44±32.83mm), altitude 1550msl, and water resource stream-fed torrential stream. Correlation analyses of the parameters showed strongest correlation at the significance level of 0.01. All parameters were positively correlated except pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, total alkalinity, and total hardness which were negatively correlated with rest. Parameters of the first year were slightly higher than second due to fluctuation in temperature, velocity and discharge, relative humidity, and rainfall influenced by climatic factors, geography, seasons, and environment of the origin and occurrence of the water resource, thus affecting rest of the parameters. Water velocity and water discharge could be maintained as per requirement of the culture. These parameters were within permissible limits being feasible and suitable for rainbow trout culture. The present paper deals with the impact of starvation on cholesterol content of gonadal tissues of a fresh water catfish, Clarias batrachus . The level of cholesterol in the gonads has been found higher in female than in male under both the normal and starved conditions. Both the male and female gonads showed non-significant depletion up to 20 days of starvation but thereafter, it was sharp. After 40 days of starvation, the cholesterol depleted about 84% in male and 79% in female of their normal values. Data were collected from seven fish markets of Barisal, southern Bangladesh including Port road fish market, Taltoli bazar fish market, Chaumatha fish market, Notullabad bus stand fish market, Kasipur bazar fish market and Bazar road fish market. Both primary and secondary data were used during 1 year study period from May, 2011 to April, 2012. Primary data were collected through field surveys and pre-structured questionnaire was used for interviewing of 10 organizers, 20 aratdars (commission agent), 50 fish traders and 100 consumers. Secondary source of information consists of published materials such as journals, textbooks, newspapers and also from interviewing different government and non-government officials and members of various fisheries related cooperative societies. The results of this study revealed 11 fish marketing channels in Barisal city’s fish marketing system. The average marketing cost ranged from 4.15% to 8.33% (6.76±0.98) % of the final retail price. The highest and lowest average fish price were recorded as USD 7.07/kg and USD 1.03/kg for giant fresh water prawn and silver carp, correspondingly. Intermediaries’ marketing margin on different species’ marketing fluctuated from 29.6% to 50.28% (39.38±5.22) % for silver carp and brown shrimp marketing, respectively. Establishment of modern fish landing center and retail markets near the fish landing port, introduction of government fish shops and  insulated and refrigerated fish vans and fish carriers, training of all personnel related to fish marketing about fish handling, quality of fish, hygiene practices, improvement of existing fish market structure, provision for government and private funding assistance for fishers/fish farmer, formulation and enactment of independent act/ordinance for fish landing and marketing are highly recommended.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v12i1.12254 Our Nature (2014), 12(1): 28-36","PeriodicalId":19905,"journal":{"name":"Our Nature","volume":"123 1","pages":"28-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79171917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biofortified maize with provitamin A could be the convenient, cheaper, and easily accessible source of vitamin A. It can provide a cheap and sustainable form of vitamin A for its deficiency prone communities. Unavailability of suitable maize varieties rich in provitamin A and insufficient nutrition education to the consumers are the major challenges for adoption of provitamin A maize. The introduction, development and commercialization of provitamin A rich maize varieties  in collaboration with national and international scientists, CG centers, multinational companies, I/NGOs, government agencies, and private sectors can help to fight against vitamin A induced malnutrition in Nepal.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v12i1.12256 Our Nature (2014), 12(1): 44-48","PeriodicalId":19905,"journal":{"name":"Our Nature","volume":"92 1","pages":"44-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78101182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
