This service can provide spectrum awareness to the network itself or to other co-located networks. In case an interfering signal is detected the network devices are able to identify less used spectrum portions such that the network can reallocate to the best available channel. The channel occupancy can be observed in real-time via a graphical user interface.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"284 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131694693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The constant progress in technology gives the opportunity to obtain efficient, in terms of cost and accuracy, localization services, and likewise it increases the number of challenges to be considered. The main problems related to the localization of mobile devices concern with the heterogeneity of visited environments and of interested hardware platforms, the energy and computational constraints imposed by the devices and the choice of appropriate tracking technologies. The most important goal in the localization research area is to provide a very accurate positioning service, regardless the surrounding environment. The purpose of this document is to briefly describe the state of the art in localization, and to outline my planned PhD research.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132195714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To that end, data mules are typically required to follow precise trajectories. However, controlling the movement of mobile nodes is not always possible. In this paper, we introduce the concept of virtual data mule (VDM), which, by leveraging opportunistic cooperation between mobile nodes, abstracts the data collection function from specific physical mules. We apply the VDM concept to the case of data retrieval from road-side sensors through vehicular nodes. We propose two VDM algorithms targeting such a scenario and, by means of simulation in realistic mobility settings, we show that VDMs can fulfill data collection requirements that are simply unfeasible when traditional data mules are employed.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126904811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such a setting, a key issue is how to schedule the transmission of packets under limited bandwidth to optimize performance. Such a scheduling consists of source control (i.e., source nodes choosing a routing scheme) and the local buffer management scheme adopted by each node. Existing works typically focus on transmission buffer management, but due to theoretical and practical difficulties, only heuristics have been proposed. In this work, we explore alternative ways to improve DTN routing performance via source control. We focus on spray-and-wait counter-based routing scheme. We first show that there exists an optimal counter value to achieve minimum average network-wide packet delivery delay. Then as a first step towards understanding multi-hop multicopy DTN routing schemes, we model a two-hop multi-copy DTN routing via a continuous time Markov Chain. Our modeling analysis provides insights into the impact of counter on routing performance and further suggests the existence of optimal counter value. In this process, we derive the capacity region of DTN routing (i.e., the maximum sustainable per-node throughput), and provide an accurate analysis of the average packet delivery delay of the two-hop single copy relaying scheme. Relying on the insights gained via simulations and modeling, we propose an adaptive scheme that allow nodes to adjust their counter values to achieve minimum packet delivery delay, in a distributed and asynchronous fashion. Simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme and suggest the potential of exploring this rich area for improving DTN routing performance.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116491963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed sensing framework is based on the novel concept of channel gain map, a geostatistics-inspired tool that allows to capture the spatiotemporal evolution of the propagation environment. The channel gain maps are updated by opportunistically reuse the primary channel idle periods. Also, the RF-power map, generated by the active sources, is tracked for spectrum spatial re-use and CR transmit power calibration purposes.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"263 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132643003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We proposed a stochastic model of the system to analyse distribution functions of data gathering times. We found that the time distribution asymptotically obeys a power-law decay in infinite space, while it becomes exponential in finite space. Mean and variance of the time distributions become finite as the number of sensors is sufficiently large, meaning efficient data gathering can be accomplished by deploying a large number of sensors when sensors are spreading data epidemically. In the finite space, moreover, both power-law and exponential distributions coexist in general. We proposed a truncated power-law distribution for a least-square fitting of the time distribution on the whole range to estimate their accurate mean and variance.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"356 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116054352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic idea consists in allowing mobile users to exchange location information when they happen to be in radio range and to exploit this information in order to improve the self-localization accuracy of mobile users. This demo is aimed at proving the effectiveness of the opportunistic approach and identifying possible drawbacks and technical issues. To this end, we will realize a simple though realistic network deployment, where a mobile user, which performs a very basic min-max self localization procedure, tries to improve the accuracy of its location by communicating on an opportunistic basis with other nodes in spatial proximity. The demo will allow us to appreciate the actual benefit that the opportunistic paradigm brings to the self-localiztion problem and to compare the performance of different opportunistic localization algorithms.","PeriodicalId":198518,"journal":{"name":"International Workshop on Mobile Opportunistic Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125339714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ferry travels in a predetermined cyclic path and collects/delivers messages from/to a node when it stops in the vicinity of the node. The radio conditions may change between successive visits of a station. We consider an opportunistic service in which the shuttle serves a node only if its radio conditions are good.
