The research employs ex-post facto methodology and econometric analysis, focusing on variables such as oil price, unemployment, balance of payment, exchange rate, and real gross domestic product (GDP). Utilising the annual Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model, the study explores the relationships among these variables, assuming them to be endogenous. Time series data from the Central Bank of Nigeria's statistical bulletin is collected for the analysis. The result of the unit root test indicate that all the variables are integrated of order one (I (1)), necessitating further investigation into their relationships. Impulse response function revealed the dynamic responses of macroeconomic variables to oil price shocks over a ten-year period. Granger causality test highlight causal relationship among the variables, emphasizing the influence of oil price shocks on unemployment, balance of payment, and real GDP. The findings suggest that oil price shocks significantly affect the selected macroeconomic variables, with implications for exchange rates, unemployment rates, and balance of payments. The study recommends policy measures to insulate the economy from international oil price shocks, such as diversification, encouraging local production, and creating a favourable environment for foreign direct investment. Additionally, the government is advised to formulate and implement fiscal and monetary policies strategically to stabilise the economy amidst oil price fluctuations, thereby promoting sustainable economic growth.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140507989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globalization has helped Nigeria, a developing nation, compete with other established nations, according to various opinions on its effects, both positive and negative. The study's goal was to determine the impact of globalization on the Nigerian economy. The researcher consequently evaluated the body of studies on how globalization has affected Nigeria's economic progress. Thus, the notions of globalization and development, as well as various aspects of Nigeria's development, are critically analyzed, as is the effect of globalization on the global economy. The outcome showed that all traditional economic development factors, including private investment, public investment, and debt series, as well as indicators of economic integration (trade openness and financial integration), were non-stationary. The study also proved that trade openness significantly boosted Nigeria's economy. However, at a 10% threshold of importance, the effect of financial integration on the economy is negligible. The study came to the conclusion that if Nigeria's economy completely integrated with the rest of the globe, it would gain more from globalization. Therefore, the report advocated for the elimination of all restrictions on commerce and money flow. The growth of the Nigerian economy to keep up with globalization is recommended based on analysis of the effects of globalization on economic development. It was therefore deduced that “if appropriate measures are not implemented, Nigeria may not participate in this process, leading to the globalization of poverty rather than wealth”.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140507752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though most empirical studies assert that unemployment is higher in less developed economies as compared to developed one; it is an established fact that no country has the capacity to provide jobs for all its citizen at same time. Hence, the attainment or maintenance of an acceptable rate of unemployment is a major concern of public policy formulators. Despite the numerous economic challenges, Cuba has the one of the lowest rate of unemployment in the world. How has it managed to achieve and maintain this? What did they do particularly different? The developing countries need this information to be able to deal with this seemingly intractable problem. Thus, the paper examined the economic strategy used by Cuba to tackle unemployment and identify some lessons for developing economies like Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140507839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evidence from the analysis reveals several insights about the underlying mechanism that governs persuasive climate argumentation which shapes sustainable development trajectory. First, the study showed that arguers construct arguments that appeals to logos as a major persuasion strategy. Second, it demonstrated how persuasion strategy entrench a culture of persuasion in climate debates. Third, it found a discordant relationship between fallacies and persuasion strategy in climate argumentation, which jeopardises arguments' persuasive power. Finally, the study evaluated how tensions in the mainstream socio-economic and environmental ecosystem creeps into climate arguments and limit persuasive power of climate arguments. These are regarded as reflective pattern of climate argumentation that are capable of stimulating behavioural change and communication strategies for sustainable development.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140507905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firms that have regard for future resource availability are mindful of resource sustainability. Hence, this study investigated the nexus between firm characteristics and sustainable development of Zenith Bank PLC in Nigeria. Secondary time series data for this study were collected from annual financial statement and accounts of Zenith Bank for a period of ten years from 2013 to 2022. The information collected on the study variables; firm size (FMSZ), financial leverage (FLEV), return on total assets (ROTA) and sustainability disclosure (SUSD) were evaluated using the Ordinary Least Square regression method in an ex post facto study design. The result obtained shows that FMSZ and FLEV has positive and significant relationship with sustainable development, while ROTA has positive but not significant relationship with sustainable development. The study concluded that firm characteristics have a significant relationship with sustainable development of Zenith Bank in Nigeria. It was recommended among others that the management of Zenith bank should be aware that factors such as company size, financial leverage and profitability are important determining elements when deciding on her corporate sustainable development policies and strategies.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140507765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria has supported the integration and movement of goods, people, and services through the adoption of the Protocol on Free Movement (PFM). However, the unrestricted movement of people across porous borders can pose security threats, particularly with the trafficking of small arms and light weapons (SALW). This paper examines the potential security threats that could arise from the protocol on free movement of people and goods and highlights the importance of collaboration with other countries to achieve safe and secure borders. The study utilized a desk research method that relied heavily on secondary data to analyze relevant materials. The findings indicate that while the protocol enhances economic integration and financial stability, organized transnational criminal networks have taken advantage of free movement to perpetuate various forms of crime such as human trafficking, arms trafficking, and terrorism. The paper argues that regional integration is crucial but must be balanced with the need to maintain National Security in Nigeria. To address the challenges posed by free movement, the paper recommends that the Nigerian government needs to be strategic while endorsing international treaties to reflect the national interest of securing the Country. Strategies should be developed to monitor porous borders to check the illegal flow of arms, and efforts should be made to mop up illegal arms through the speedy establishment of the National Commission for the coordination and control of the proliferation of small Arms and Light Weapon (NATCOM) bill awaiting assent from the president. Additionally, intelligence sharing should be enhanced to promote regional integration while maintaining national security.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128710059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Struggling with poverty and underdevelopment, many analysts classified them as regions of developing states. Today, countries like Japan, Korea and Taiwan are among the fastest growing in the World while Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are still struggling with huge societal inequality, institutional corruption, and extreme poverty. The scope of this paper is to identify key factors that are attributed to different developmental outcomes between East Asia and Latin America. This will be accomplished through a comparative analysis of state policies, sectoral growth and relationship to external trade and market vulnerabilities, between three countries from each region, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico from Latin America and Japan, Korea, and Taiwan from East Asia. The paper argues that the model of developmentalism implemented in Latin America never aimed to achieve societal equality or technological growth and was tormented by political instability, elite-controlled systems, and protectionism that had no relativity with global trade. On the contrary, East Asia identified its internal market weaknesses and was committed to generating macroeconomic stability, creating an ideal atmosphere for private investment and political stability.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128149092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a general belief that educated individuals fare better in the labour market than the less educated. This study empirically examines investment and expenditures in education, and its influence on unemployment rate in Nigeria from 1991 to 2021. Unit root test, ARDL approach, bound test, Breusch Godfrey serial correlation LM test and the CUSUM test were employed. Unemployment rate (UER) was used as the dependent variable while Federal government recurrent expenditure (GEE), credit to private sector (CPS), average of school enrollment rate (ASE) as proxy for literacy rate, labour force participation rate (LFP) and gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) as the independent variables. Findings revealed that apart from UEM that is stationary at the level, the other variables are stationary at first difference given the 5% level of significance. Labour force participation rate is statistically significant. There is an insignificant positive relationship between government recurrent expenditure on education and unemployment rate in the long -run. On the other hand, credit to private sector, school enrolment rate, and gross fixed capital formation all conform to their a priori expectations, but are insignificant, i.e., statistically indifferent from zero. The study recommended among others that an actionable and working fiscal policy in the educational sector should be established and government should improve on the quality of institutions through better teacher training, investment in educational research development, and the establishment of vocational training centers that provide practical skills to students.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125475045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study anchored on the economic deterrence theory and cross sectional survey research design was used on a sample of MSMEs in South-South, Nigeria. The primary data was collected using a questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale and a sample size of 535 using convenience sampling. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis while multivariate analysis was used in the estimation of the regression model developed for the study. The findings revealed that tax penalty has positive and significant influence on sustainable economic growth among MSMEs in south-south of Nigeria; tax fairness has positive and significant influence on sustainable economic growth among MSMEs in south-south of Nigeria; perceived opportunities of tax evasion has negative and insignificant influence on sustainable economic growth among MSMEs in south-south of Nigeria; tax audit has positive and significant effect on sustainable economic growth among MSMEs in south-south of Nigeria; and tax system has positive and significant influence on sustainable economic growth among MSMEs in south-south of Nigeria. On the basis of the findings, the study concluded that tax determinants such as tax penalty, tax fairness, tax audit, tax system and opportunity for evasion affects the level of sustainable economic growth among micro, small and medium enterprises in South-South Nigeria. The study recommended amongst others that government should expand the tax administration system in Nigeria and strengthen tax collection schemes and follow up procedures on MSMEs. Also frequent tax reforms designed and implemented that would increase revenue generation through tax collection and consequently stimulating sustainable economic growth of Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132486359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The general objective of the study is to asses factors influencing performance of insurance industry in Sierra Leone, with the specific aim to identify variables impacting mode of operation in underwriting, claim and finance departments in insurance Companies in Sierra Leone. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used in this study. Quantitative results were used to assess the effect of insurance and reinsurance on the performance of insurance companies in Sierra Leone. The qualitative data was used to establish the relationship and magnitude between insurance and performance by explaining the results in the research. In conclusion, the study was able to identify that insurance programmes around the world are highly variable and differ with respect to products, modes of distribution, management capacity, institutional maturity and in numerous other ways. Also, the socioeconomic context and environment in which the insurance programmes evolved influence the development and performance of insurance companies. This diversity makes insurance performance comparisons difficult and sometimes artificial; therefore, a measure of caution should accompany every conclusion about relative performance as in the case of Sierra Leone.","PeriodicalId":198402,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Development and Economic Sustainability","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121397387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
