We found lower education, violent environments, and higher child born rates to be associated with a higher risk of violence toward the woman. We also discovered through a spatial econometric analysis that geographic setting and cultural patterns matter in the intensification of gender-biased violence in Colombia. Finally, through a discussion between the results obtained and some qualitative approaches, we presented a transition proposal from patriarchal behaviors to the empowerment of women by the generation of community processes of popular education, social pedagogy, and female participation in the formulation of public policies, because as we detected, and as other studies have shown, education is a fundamental factor for the reduction of gender violence, causing positive impacts on homes, childcare and their environments.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127201015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ninety–percent of participants joined the program because they were attempting to improve their body shape and lose weight. According to the respondents, when exercise classes are perceived as helping to improve body shape, respondents receive positive comments from others, feel body tone, notice weight loss, perceive a better personal appearance and body image satisfaction. When exercise classes are considered as not helping with body shape improvement, women notice that body tone remains flabby, no weight loss occurs, or the classes are rated as not focusing enough on problem body part areas. A theoretical model is recommended illustrating three possibilities across a continuum of individual body image. Those people in psychological harmony with their physicalbodies are considered the healthiest.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133348652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results showed that the balance of characters was not equal with males filling more of the lead roles (83.3%), title roles (85.5%), speaking roles (73.3%), and membership in the main gang (72.0%). More than half (55.3%) of the films failed the Bechdel Test, although female-led films were more likely to pass than male-led films. Males were more likely to fill the public roles, with significantly more male characters having jobs/occupations than females. In the parenting role, fathers of the lead characters were more likely to be involved than mothers. The findings from the stereotyping questions were mixed with females more likely to be shown with a sexy body. However, males were not more likely to be brave and heroic (in this case by performing rescues) when the ratio of characters was included in the calculations. These results are upsetting because of the extensive amount of time children spend with media and the worldwide impact of Western-produced films. This disproportionate portrayal of society negatively influences a child’s learning and socialization processes.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114127080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to determine the leadership positions, barriers to occupying leadership positions, and training received for leadership positions among medical doctors by gender in Abuja, Nigeria. Methodology: A cross sectional, descriptive study carried out among medical doctors in Abuja over four months. Results: Questionnaires from 162 doctors consisting 103 males and 59 females were analysed. The mean age was 36.23 SD ± 8.867 years. Leadership positions held were higher among the males for all categories except Chief Medical Advisory Committee (1.9%:3.4%). The commonest leadership position occupied was chairman of a subcommittee (n=30; 18.5%), the leadership setting being mainly in hospitals (n=71; 43.8%) and leadership position obtained mainly by appointment (n=76; 47%). The commonest barrier to obtaining a leadership position was “not interested” (n=30; 18.5%). Sixteen (27%) of 59 female doctors were not interested in occupying leadership positions. Seventy-five (46.3%) doctors had received formal training on leadership which was mainly in classrooms in Nigeria (n=49; 30.2%). Conclusion: More doctors, especially females should be encouraged to occupy positions of leadership that come with authoritative and consultative powers.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114645105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For decades, all social and feminist movements have sought to eliminate categorization, discrimination to create a just and equitable society based on the concept of difference, equal versus difference dichotomy. What analytical tools and frameworks we need or have at present in the absence of these categorization or binary opposition to be able to recognize and address inequalities and how we can regard things as equal if we deconstruct difference entirely? Or maybe as Chandra Mohanty suggests, continue our fight as feminist activists and scholars based on shared differences and common destinies without taking the side.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128024337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although, women in agriculture sector have a greater role to everyplace in the world, which differs from country to country, state to state, work to work, society to society and region to region. Combination of the quantitative and qualitative survey methods was used. The analysis targeted on primary data by using observation and interview. Based on previous culture in Rwanda; most of women were not used to participate in cash crops, thought that was for men; so far, it was identified that women who intervene in cash crops prove their capability in it, and contribute more to gender equality as one way of empowering them economically. This study will help rural women farmers from rural area who were not participating yet in cash crop to change their minds, and be able to participate in cash crops as men do. The context is essential and policies can be founded on sound materials and gender analysis.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121142175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates women‘s singleness by drawing on the work of Shen Zijiu ( 沈兹九,1898–1989), a Chinese feminist who examined the causes and consequences of this gendered social practice through the conceptualization of everyday life. This intellectual history engaged with the social history of the gendered division of labor in the early twentieth century and the cultural history of intellectual debates during the May Fourth Movement. Deriving evidence from surveys of women professionals and workers in the 1920s, this historical inquiry into Chinese feminism in the 1920s explores the alienation of female labor, the visibility of women in China‘s urban industries, and the emergence of women‘s singleness in the wake of capitalist development in the early twentieth century. Meanwhile, the research examined the public debate over women‘s singleness in which Shen Zijiu participated, in connection with the reconceptualization of marriage, family, and love in the context of anti-Confucianism, liberalism, and social evolution in the 1920s. This everyday feminism is indicative of single women and gender politics in China‘s postsocialist situation, which, as the author argues, posits a critique on the epistemological, theoretical, and political outlook in today‘s China.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128636565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These situations push people to be displaced from one place to another and from one country to the other to seek for refuge. Today more than ever before, the number of people leaving one region to the other is increasing, and among these are women and children. According to the UN high commissioner for refugees, in 2017, 65.6 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes worldwide, with nearly 20 people being displaced every minute as a result of conflict or persecution. Reports from UNHCR (2017) Cameroon, shows that Cameroon has more than 600,000 refugees mostly coming from the Central African Republic and Nigeria. The Government of Cameroon works with partners like the UNHCR, the World Food Programme, UNICEF, UN Women and other national institutions like the Ministry of Women‟s Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF) to improve the lives of these refugees. UN Women and MINPROFF work particularly with women and girls. It aims at identifying the potential roles the Quranic discourse assigns for women to play. As the study utilizes corpus linguistics, a concordance of key words in context (KWIC) to list the Quranic discourses reporting the roles is used. The study exclusively applies a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach to the data collected. It inclusively builds on Fairclough's (2010) and van Dijk's 1(998) models of analysis to describe the roles assigned for woman to play, interpret the properties given to the role players and explain the forces lying behind the Quranic selection and use. It has been found that woman in the Quranic discourse plays a considerable number of significant human, social, leading, ethnic, and ethical roles. As a human being, woman is supposed to enable peacefulness of mind. When a mother, she follows her intuition to protect her own family. If a fruitless wife, she tends to fight against racial discrimination and genocide. As a field worker, she avoids direct competition with her counterpart, the male, and struggles for doing her job properly and patiently. As a leader, she is exceptionally a peacemaker. And as a witness, she always tells the truth tactfully. Consequently, it has been concluded that woman in the QD is honored or rather promoted to a good position. Finally, the study implicates for pedagogy and research on Muslim woman.","PeriodicalId":198281,"journal":{"name":"INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GENDER & WOMEN'S STUDIES","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124493913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
