In principle, TES system is a load management technology which shift load from peak to off-peak utility periods thus reduces maximum demand of electrical needs during the day and takes advantage of the low off peak tariff offered by the utility company (TNB). Data of a month's load profile was analysed and it was found that the TES system consumed more energy by 27% compared to the direct supply system of chilled water but its maximum demand reduced by 23%. The estimated cost (RM) per day was less by only 4%, under no energy loss, due to the introduction of thermal energy storage system compared with the direct system. Under the current electricity tariff, TES system in Malaysia is not feasible economically. However, if the maximum demand electrical tariff is revised the TES system can be attractive.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122535434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, recent studies in a variety of neurophysiological researches have been done to link intelligence with individual's brainwave pattern. Hence this paper proposes an intelligent approach to classify IQ via brainwave sub-band power ratio and artificial neural network (ANN). Fifty samples of electroencephalogram (EEG) dataset have been collected during IQ test session. Three IQ levels have been categorized based on the IQ scores from Raven's Progressive Matrices as the control group. Left hemispheric brainwave focusing on theta, alpha and beta sub-bands are the key discussion of this paper. The features are used as input to train the ANN. Formerly, synthetic data have also been generated with white Gaussian noise to increase the performance of the classifier. Subsequently, the network model have been developed using an ANN that is trained with optimized parameters which are learning rate, momentum constant and hidden neurons. The network model trained with back-propagation algorithm has yielded low mean squared error (MSE). Findings also indicate that the distinct intelligence quotient levels can be classified with 97.62% training and 94.44% testing accuracies via brainwave sub-band power ratio.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"139 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127463311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six agarwood oil samples obtained at Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) were extracted and their chemical compounds were examined by GC-MS. The work is followed by the grading system using the proposed k-NN. The study shows that there are 10 significant chemical compounds of agarwood oils. They are β-agarofuran, α-agarofuran, 10-epi-□-eudesmol, □-eudesmol, longifolol, oxo-agarospirol, hexadecanol and eudesmol. These compounds are used as inputs to the k-NN algorithm for grading them. The performance of the k-NN is measured and the highest accuracy obtained by k-NN which is above 83.3% shows that k-NN is a reliable classifier in grading the agarwood oil quality.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130908985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water quality level is used to determine the suitability and safeness for general usage. Hence in this study, fuzzy algorithms are developed to evaluate water quality based on three features namely power of hydrogen (pH), dissolved oxygen (DO) as well as temperature. Firstly, sensors of pH and DO are connected to stamp circuit that acted as universal asynchronous receiver / transmitter (UART) whilst temperature sensor is connected to a microcontroller. Next, fuzzy algorithms are developed based on water quality standards from the Department of Environmental Malaysia for decision making. Thus, both hardware and software are integrated and initial findings showed that the proposed system is apt for monitoring of water quality.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132891726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, the number of dual income households who leave their children in nursery schools have been increasing in Japan. Such parents are not able to grasp their children's behavior in daily life. Considering these issues, the researches related to child behavioral analysis have been proceeded by using image data taken from digital cameras. However, it is difficult to acquire the behavioral information from the digital cameras at anytime, anywhere. Therefore, we are focusing on wearable systems for keeping an eye on a child. Specifically, we adopt the EEG to design the constructing system. In this paper, we acquire single-channel EEG recordings from nursery school children when they watch picture-story shows. Furthermore, we apply a non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to artifactitious rejection and a genetic algorithm-partial least squares (GA-PLS) regression to detect important frequency components and design the interest prediction models for the child using a single-channel EEG. As a result, we showed that over 60% estimation accuracy could be obtained all except one subject and the specific combinations of the frequency components selected by the GA-PLS, and we also could confirm that the NMF could remove the eye blink artifacts.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115209117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In plants, the DNA gel electrophoresis was performed for analytical purposes to identify the banding patterns of DNA base pair, which can reveal the genetic relatedness, identify the plants genomic and many more. Due to the quality and pattern of the images, the lane and band detection in the DNA gel images present a great challenge to computer interpretation. The image enhancement is performed using two different filters that are spatial and frequency filter. The two approaches are compared, which the expectation from the enhanced image is the detection of lanes can be conducted properly and accurately before performing further analysis to detect the bands. Forty-six of poor quality plant DNA gel images in .jpeg format with different size were used in this study. The quality of the enhanced images was accessed and evaluated using objective image quality metric, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). The results that were obtained show that spatial domain filtering is a promising approach in the enhancement process of the poor DNA gel images.","PeriodicalId":198247,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127314235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
