The main goal of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effect of selenium nanoparticles and aqueous extract of the <i>Moringa</i> plant against diabetes mellitus complications and compare their therapeutic effects. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Fifty six Wistar male rats were divided randomly into 8 groups (7 rats each): (i) Control, (ii): Received corn oil, (iii): Treated with Se-NPs, (iv): Injected orally with <i>Moringa</i> aqueous extract (MAE), (v): Treated with a single i.p., dose of streptozotocin (STZ), (vi): Single i.p., dose of STZ followed by Se-NPs, (vii): Treated with a single i.p., dose of STZ then MAE orally and (viii): Injected with STZ and then received Se-NPs. After 4 weeks the blood sera were isolated and stored at -20°C for investigation of values of insulin, GSH, MDA, SOD, GSH-PX, triglycerides, T-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol. <b>Results:</b> The STZ treatment decreased insulin, HDL cholesterol and body weight values while increasing glucose, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and mild degeneration of islets of Langerhans. Environmental changes are in the form of declining water quality and damage to coastal ecosystems, one of which is seagrass. Therefore, it is necessary to observe changes in the area of seagrass beds in the waters of Barugaiya Village so that it is known how much seagrass has actually been in the area in the last 5 years. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Observations were made from March to May, 2023 in the waters of Barugaiya Village, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi. The method used is seagrass classification using Sentinel-2A images corrected by the water column with the Lyzenga algorithm to reduce the effect of depth. <b>Results:</b> The distribution area of seagrass in Barugaiya Village for the 2019-2023 period was 111.03, 107.16, 103.81, 102.54 and 99.70 ha, respectively. Every year there is a decrease in seagrass area, the rate of decline is around 0.02% each year (1.27-3.87 ha). Reduced drought and flooding stress in vulnerable species and ecosystems depends on our ability to comprehend how drought and flooding affect plant physiology and plant-associated microbes. Involvement of both abscisic acid ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways has been noted during drought. Hypoxic conditions impede hydraulic conductance, nutrient uptake and plant growth and development, as well as root aerobic respiration. The root microbiome, which works with the roots during drought and flood, is made up of plant growth-promoting rhizosphere, endophytes and mycorrhizas. A large number of phytohormones, primarily auxins, cytokinin and ethylene, as well as enzymes like 1-Aminocyclopropane-1-Carboxylate deaminase (ACC deaminase) and metabolites like exopolysaccharides are produced by rhizospheric microbes. These phytohormones, enzymes and metabolites have role in the induction of systemic drought tolerance in plants. Under hypoxia, anaerobic microbes with the potential to harm the plant due to their pathogenic behavior or soil denitrification ability are more likely to be present in the rhizosphere and roots. In this study, <i>Paris polyphylla</i> samples were identified and evaluated cytotoxic activity against the liver cancer cells. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> <i>Paris polyphylla</i> species were collected from various areas in Yen Bai, Vietnam, which were identified by comparative morphological method and DNA barcoding for the <i>18S, matK</i> genes and <i>ITS</i> region. <i>Paris polyphylla</i> samples were dried until constant weight, ground into a fine powder and extracted in various solvents. The bioactivity of these extracts were done by the MTT assay. <b>Results:</b> The sequences of <i>18S, matK</i> genes and <i>ITS</i> region were high similarity to sequences of <i>P. polyphylla</i> in the National Center for Biotechnology Information. The N-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions were produced from the methanol extract of <i>P. polyphylla</i>. The TLC results showed that there was a significant difference in the component of n-hexane and ethyl acetate fraction. The N-hexane fraction contains mainly low-polarity and non-polarity substances. While ethyl acetate fraction consists mainly of polar substances. In addition, ethyl acetate fraction was shown the strongest cytotoxic activity on the cancer cell lines HepG2 and Huh7 with the evaluation of IC<sub>50</sub> = 115.11±2.77 μg mL<sup>1</sup> and IC<sub>50</sub> = 148.11±1.78 μg mL<sup>1</sup>. <b>Conclusion:</b> The extract of <i>Paris polyphylla</i> demonstrated strong potential to inhibit the growth of the liver cancer cell line. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus on blood cells' indices and plasma components. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> This is a prospective cross-sectional study. The research was carried out at the King Fahad Medical Center in Riyadh, in duration from February, 2023 to May, 2023, in the interest of healthcare consumers attending the hematology laboratory for routine investigations. Sixty samples were collected and complete blood count, lipid profile, HbA1c and blood glucose for blood samples. <b>Results:</b> In this study, females accounted for 53.3% of the participants, while males accounted for 46.7%. In terms of age distribution, more than 55 years old accounted for 50% of the study's participants. A significant correlation has been found between HbA1c and red blood cell Mean Cell Volume (MCV) and there was a significant association between the high level of HbA1c and the red blood count. Knowledge of the reproductive biology of a species is essential for proper and sustainable fisheries management. Monthly variations in the gonad maturity level of the clams from the coastal waters of Bengkalis Island Indonesia, were examined. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Samples of the clam were collected monthly at the intertidal zone during low tide from May to September, 2020. A total of 239 specimens of which 116 females and 123 males were examined. Reproductive aspects observed in this study included sex ratio, gonadosomatic index, monthly gonadal maturity level and female fecundity. Mature female or near spawning phases were used for fecundity estimation. The sex ratios were analysed using a Chi-quadrat-Test, whereas to determine differences in fecundity between female individuals tested by Analysis of Variance. <b>Results:</b> Based on the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological observation of both sexes's gonads, it can be concluded that early spawning occurred in August and the peak seemed to take place during October-November. The sex ratios were analysed using a Chi-quadrat-Test which was not different from parity. Gonad maturation time between males and females indicates synchrony and no hermaphrodites were observed in the collection. Females shell length range of 75.5 to 89.3 mm produced 4.63×103-7.43×103 eggs ind-1 female (N = 10). Females with a shell length between 75.5 and 89.3 mm had varying fecundities, but analysis of variance showed no significant difference (Sig>0.05). <b>Conclusion:</b> Based on the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological analysis, <i>S. lamarckii</i> in Bengkalis waters spawned in August. Camel milk (CM) and camel whey protein (CWP) are natural antioxidants that work as dietary supplements that enhance immune defenses. The goal of this study was to estimate the therapeutic efficacy of camel whey protein and camel milk, in addition to the toxic effects of the antibiotic levofloxacin. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> As 42 male albino rats were divided as follows: G1: Control, G2: CM orally for 15 days, G3: CWP orally for 15 days, G4: LFX orally for 10 days, G5: LFX for 10 days and followed with CM daily for 15 days and G6: LFX for 10 days followed by CWP orally for 15 days. At the end of the study blood sera from all groups were collected for estimation of serum total protein, albumin, globulins and glucose. Sections of the liver and kidney were separated for estimation of GSH, CAT, GSH-PX. All data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance. <b>Results:</b> The LFX treatment induced a decrease in serum levels of proteinogram, glucose, hepatic and renal values of oxidative stress and raising values of serum kidney and liver functions, hepatic and renal MDA. The treatment of LFX-treated rats with CWP led to a more increase in serum proteinogram, glucose, hepatic and renal (GSH, CAT, GSH-PX) a decline in serum values of (urea, ALAT, ASAT, ALP, BIL, T.P, D. BIL, Ind. This study aimed to determine the significance and relationship between Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) and other infertility hormones in the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> This study involves 200 women who visited Al-Ramadi Maternity and Child Teaching Hospital in Al-Ramadi, Iraq from October, 2022 to May, 2023. Study participants included 50 women as controls and 150 women with PCOS who were diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria. The clinical history included oligomenorrhea and BMI. Laboratory investigations included blood tests for FSH, LH, prolactin and AMH levels done for all women who participated in this study. <b>Results:</b> Age and BMI were comparable for PCOS cases and controls. The AMH levels in women with PCOS increased statistically with severity compared to controls, with the mean AMH level found to be 3.53 ng mL<sup>1</sup> in controls, whereas it ranged from 6.19 for mild cases to 7.49 for moderate cases to 12.83 for severe cases in PCOS cases. The AMH alone had the highest diagnostic sensitivity (78.6%) and specificity (97.6%) for PCOS at a cut-off of 5.82 ng mL<sup>1</sup>. All study participants had a positive correlation between AMH and LH (R<sup>2</sup> = 0.391, p = 0.0031). <b>Conclusion:</b> The AMH levels were noticeably higher in PCOS patients compared to controls. The AMH could not accurately diagnose PCOS when used as an independent marker. Extract in Diabetic Rats on Nitric Oxide and Malondialdehyde Levels.","authors":"Parawansah, Nuralifah, Ruslin, Nurramadhani Armada Sida, Fadhliyah Malik, Atymutmain","doi":"10.3923/pjbs.2023.177.184","DOIUrl":"10.3923/pjbs.2023.177.184","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p><b>Background and Objective:</b> Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia caused by disturbances in pancreatic β cells resulting in the formation of reactive oxygen species which in this study was characterized by increased levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde in male Wistar rats with diabetes mellitus models. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Animal modeling of diabetes mellitus using 40 mg kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt. streptozotocin intraperitoneally. The antioxidant activity is based on the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) method. Determination of nitric oxide and MDA levels using the Griess method and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) Assay, respectively. The animal models were divided into six treatment groups, normal control (KN), positive control (K<sup>+</sup>) (glibenclamide), negative control (K<sup></sup>) (Na-CMC 0.5%), teak leaf ethanol extract group at a dose of D<sub>1</sub> (100 mg kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt.), D<sub>2</sub> (200 mg kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt.) and D<sub>3</sub> (300 mg kg<sup>1</sup> b.wt.). <b>Results:</b> The antioxidant activity showed that the IC<sub>50</sub> values of vitamin C and the ethanol extract of <i>Tectona grandis</i> leaves were 18.208 and 62.236 μg mL<sup>1</sup>, respectively. The NO levels in KN = 83.133 μmol L<sup>1</sup>, K<sup>+</sup> = 118.300 μmol L<sup>1</sup>, K<sup></sup> = 317.467 μmol L<sup>1</sup>, D<sub>1</sub> = 210.133 μmol L<sup>1</sup>, D<sub>2</sub> = 184.467 μmol L<sup>1</sup> and D<sub>3</sub> = 129.300 μmol L<sup>1</sup>. This research aimed to ascertain the glyceride profile of iridescent shark fish oil hydrolyzed by immobilized lipase from <i>Thermomyces lanuginosus</i> at the sn-1,3 position and identify the position of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> To extract the fish oil from the iridescent shark, the soxhletation method was utilized. The analysis of the fatty acid composition that was carried out using gas chromatography (GC) was previously esterified with BF<sub>3</sub> before it was carried out to position the fatty acid hydrolysis that was carried out using lipase enzymes to position the fatty acid composition. <b>Results:</b> The sample had more unsaturated fatty acids than saturated ones. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are more concentrated in the fat molecule's sn-2 position than in the sn-1+sn-3 location. Iridescent shark fish oil meets the recommended ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 (1:1) or better (2:1). <b>Conclusion:</b> It has been discovered that iridescent shark fish oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, especially those in the sn-2 position.
