En se mettant ainsi en scene, l’editeur devient un auteur. Il adopte alors une nouvelle posture, une posture auctoriale, tout en conservant sa posture d’editeur. De quelle maniere se forge cette double posture, unique en son genre? A cote du dialogue qu’elle y noue avec ses correspondants de France et de Nouvelle‑France, l’Ursuline poursuit, inlassablement, une conversation interieure, faite d’oraisons et de prieres a Dieu. Cet echange est un lieu de secrets, un espace qui se dit mal, s’ecrit encore moins, mais dont son fils et d’autres sollicitent pourtant le recit. Ses lecteurs assistent alors a une autre conversation, toujours recommencee, avec le « Verbe eternel ». Cet Autre habite toutes les lettres et fait, insensiblement, de tout lecteur un tiers, spectateur et temoin du mystere. In offering its members the opportunity to circulate their work and receive informal feedback from other artists and writers, the club emerges as one of the forces in what Robert Darnton calls the “communications circuit,” one that creates a smaller, iterative circuit joining the author and the reader, the author as reader and the reader as author, before any work reaches the publisher. This article thus examines the workings of the Pen and Pencil Club and its mediating role between production and circulation of written texts.
