{"title":"EXPLORING INFORMATION SOURCES AND AWARENESS LEVELS: EMPOWERING EDUCATION ON ELDER ABUSE IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA","authors":"Oluwaferanmi Adebayo, Olusola Oyero, Kehinde Oyesomi","doi":"10.46529/socioint.202334","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.46529/socioint.202334","url":null,"abstract":"Effective communication, access to accurate information, and raising awareness are crucial components in addressing the issue of elder abuse and empowering education on this issue. However, there is a limited understanding of the information sources that residents in Lagos State, Nigeria rely on when it comes to elder abuse awareness and education. In order to bridge this knowledge gap, this study aimed to investigate the information sources and awareness levels among residents in Lagos State regarding elder abuse. A quantitative study employing a questionnaire was conducted. The sample size consisted of 499 respondents from three Local Government Areas, with 452 valid responses obtained. Descriptive statistics, including percentages and tables, were utilized to present the data. The hypothesis was tested using the Mann-Whitney test, facilitating a comparison between two independent groups. The findings shed light on the information sources through which residents acquire awareness and education about elder abuse. Surprisingly, social media emerged as the primary source of information, surpassing traditional media outlets and interpersonal sources. This shift in information consumption patterns highlights the increasing influence and reach of social media platforms in disseminating information, raising awareness, and educating the public. However, the study also revealed a notable lack of discussions and information regarding elder abuse in traditional media and interpersonal interactions. This suggests a potential gap in the information sources utilized to address elder abuse issues. It is crucial to recognize the importance of diverse information sources, including traditional media and interpersonal communication, in promoting awareness and empowering education about elder abuse. Despite the gaps in information sources, the study found that the majority of respondents demonstrated high levels of awareness regarding elder abuse. This indicates that residents in Lagos State are, to a significant extent, educated on elder abuse and its implications. However, it is important to consider the quality and accuracy of the information received, as well as the need for ongoing education and engagement to ensure a comprehensive understanding of elder abuse. These findings emphasize the need to foster discussions and disseminate information about elder abuse through various information sources. Leveraging mass media, traditional media outlets, and interpersonal interactions can maximize awareness, empower education, and provide a well-rounded approach to preventing and addressing elder abuse. By utilizing these diverse information sources, policymakers, organizations, and advocates can effectively raise awareness, educate the public, and implement strategies to protect and support the elderly population in Lagos State, Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":197496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOCIOINT 2023- 10th International Conference on Education and Education of Social Sciences","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129227897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite Nigeria's strong emphasis on family values, many young people today struggle to provide support and care for the elderly. These senior citizens have made substantial contributions to society during their working years but find themselves dependent on government social assistance due to their inability to work and care for themselves adequately. Unfortunately, the government's legislation and initiatives to address the needs of the aging population remain insufficient. The study focuses on exploring the educational impact of advocacy communication in eradicating elder abuse, specifically in South-West Nigeria. It aims to understand how advocacy efforts can contribute to raising awareness, promoting education, and implementing preventive measures against elder abuse within the region. The study underscores the crucial role of education through advocacy communication in combating elder abuse. It highlights the need for the South-West Nigerian government to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or age, through educational initiatives that address elder abuse. The study recommends identifying the complexities associated with existing approaches, acknowledging the inadequacies of current legal and policy measures, and fostering coordinated interagency efforts to effectively prevent the proliferation of elder abuse issues in Nigeria. By incorporating these educational insights, including awareness campaigns, training programs, and community engagement, South-West Nigeria can establish a comprehensive framework to combat elder abuse and promote a society that values and protects its elderly population.","PeriodicalId":197496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOCIOINT 2023- 10th International Conference on Education and Education of Social Sciences","volume":"79 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114038423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Business intelligence (BI) tools can assist identify problems and hazards, facilitate decision-making, and offer insightful information on how projects are performing. The purpose of this study is to examine how BI systems are used for project management in higher education institutions and to suggest a successful project management strategy that incorporates BI systems. To determine the present state-of-the-art in project management and BI systems in higher education, the research technique includes a rigorous literature review of academic and industry sources. An analysis of a case study from a university that has used a BI system for project management is also included in the Study. The study's conclusions imply that BI systems can enhance project management at higher education institutions by supplying precise real-time data on project performance, risks, and problems. By facilitating better decision-making, early issue detection, and prompt problem resolution, the deployment of a BI system has improved project management, according to the case study analysis. The study suggests a successful project management strategy that incorporates BI systems in higher education institutions based on the findings. The following steps make up the suggested strategy: Project objectives and scope definition, project planning, BI system implementation, BI system performance monitoring, project issue and risk identification and mitigation, and continuous improvement are the steps in a project. The suggested framework can assist institutes of higher learning in managing projects successfully by making use of BI tools. The paper also outlines the critical success criteria for BI system deployment in project management in higher education institutions, such as top management support, transparent communication, user training, and efficient data governance.","PeriodicalId":197496,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOCIOINT 2023- 10th International Conference on Education and Education of Social Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130607711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
