Depression as a Philosophical Conscience in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore 在村上春树的《岸边的卡夫卡》中,抑郁是一种哲学良知
This paper tackles the philosophical effect of depression on Kafka Tamura, the major character in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore. Kafka Tamura has shown quite a clear disparity in his personalities, depending on some circumstances he encounters through his journey. Depression has almost always been present when Kafka is addressing the ominous imaginary persona, “the boy named Crow.” This change is believed to be linked to depression as a philosophical compass that weaves the rationale and the mental capabilities of Murakami’s intriguing character. Therefore, by applying Rene Descartes’ “Dualism” and John Cottingham’s “Trialism”, this paper will examine this issue in depth to provide a philosophical understanding towards naming depression as a conscience, rather than being a hindrance for the character. In effect, dualism goes over the idea that human beings are divided into two sub-personalities: minds and bodies, and the possibility that they can be separated. However, its counterpart –trialism—develops the scope originally devised by dualism. It suggests that human beings do actually have a third component: sensation. Nonetheless, the paper attempts to identify a fourth dimension which lies beyond both theories. This “fourth” component which we intend to coin as “Quadrialism” is what Kafka develops as a form of depression manifested in “the boy named Crow.” It will be apparent that Kafka does not lack characterisation or a personality; rather, his characterisation is depression-bound. \u0000Keywords: Haruki Murakami, Kafka and the boy named Crow; Depression; Dualism; Trialism; Quadrialism.

Mustafawi (2006) analyzed and proposed constraints regarding the lenition of /dʒ/ to /j/ in Qatari Arabic. In this study we attempt to test the universality of these constraints (namely LAZY, LAZYRime, (LAZY/[+low])Rime, and * GG). We conclude that the constraints that regulate lenition in Qatari Arabic apply in Kuwaiti Spoken Arabic. We also propose more language-specific constraints (namely LAZY*cc, and LAZY*DL) that regulate lenition in Kuwaiti Spoken Arabic. Furthermore, we analyze the lexical exceptions that restrict the lenition of /dʒ/ to /j/ and mention three main approaches, in the literature, within OT to account for lexical exceptions. \u0000Keywords: Lenition, Optimality Theory, Germination, Double Lenition, LAZY Constraint.

The cover story in that edition was undeniably motivated by a political issue in Indonesia at the time. The issue was President Jokowi's approval of the new bills for the Corruption Eradication Commission (Indonesian: KPK). In this research, we investigated how the cover story in that edition had portrayed President Jokowi. The Tempo Magazine's cover story was selected as this research data. The cover story consisted of pictorial and linguistic modes. In the analysis, we employed a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) approach to reveal ideological meanings behind those modes. After analyzing them, we found that the cover story had portrayed President Joko Widodo negatively. The negative portrayal came from the silhouette in the pictorial mode and the social actions represented in the linguistic mode. The results of this research can scientifically contribute to answering the question of whether the cover story insulted the Indonesian President or not.\u0000Keywords: Cover Story, Insulting Discourse, Joko Widodo, Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, Visual Grammar.

Given the importance of Arabic as the primary language of communication in most Jordanian universities, this study aims at exploring the difficulties encountered by non-native speakers of Arabic in learning the language. It also seeks to investigating the learners’ needs regarding Arabic as a foreign language (AFL) in Jordanian Universities. The participants in this study include 169 students from four countries (i.e., Malaysia, Thailand, China, and Indonesia). The students were selected from three different disciplines (i.e., Arabic Language, Islamic Finance, and Usuluddin). The study used a questionnaire adapted from previous studies on this topic. The questionnaire contains 49 items: 26 items ask about the difficulties of learning the Arabic language, and 23 items ask about the students’ needs in learning it. The results of this study revealed different difficulties in learning Arabic. The students also reported their needs for improving their proficiency in Arabic. The students mentioned some difficulties and needs related to productive skills such as writing and speaking. They also reported difficulties and needs related to receptive skills but with more focus on the academic context. Based on the results of this study, some recommendations for future research have been provided.\u0000Keywords: Needs Analysis, Arabic Language, Speakers of Other Languages, Yarmouk University.

Due to growing concerns over global environmental crises, these writers have showed significant attention to nature by using trees as symbols to comment on political, social, and cultural issues. Through a close reading of these texts, this study analyses the multifaceted meanings of trees from a postcolonial ecocritical angle. It argues that trees in these novels carry symbolic meanings and provide a valuable understanding of culture, resistance, and violence in the texts. Trees represent an essential part in in both characters’ lives and narratives’ structure and remain powerful icons to decipher thematic significations and understand metaphors. Further, it demonstrates how these writers enlarge their scope of writing, by adding postcolonial and environmental dimensions to the cultural, political, and historical issues they depict. \u0000Keywords: Trees, Postcolonial Ecocriticism, Culture, Resistance, Violence.

In order to compare statistical results with qualitative findings, the study used convergent design and collected data from the University of Jordan’s students. A total number of 160 participants were selected and divided into two language groups, namely: German and Spanish to undertake the semi-structured survey. Results of the study showed that students complained about the theoretical part of the courses in general and had positive opinions related to their practical training trials and future prospects as teachers of Spanish or German. However, the findings suggested some important changes to be made in the course of teaching methodologies of foreign languages. This study aims to investigate the extent to which the main female characters in O’Neill’s two selected plays objectify others. Nina, the heroine of Strange Interlude and Abbie, the heroine of Desire Under the Elms are objectifiers of other people. This study focuses on three elements of Nussbaum’s theory of objectification: instrumentality, fungibility and ownership. The paper suggests that Branch’s room of theories leads to the spatialization of historiographic time in the narrative, considering that this room is the space where history leaves its imprints and where the past intersects with the present. Noting that spatialistion of time means the simultaneous juxtaposition of different times, this room manifests a simultaneous juxtaposition of moments, thus transporting the reader to different plots and times that coexist spatially. It helps the reader to receive the textualized version of history, as it embraces documents, archives, videos, and reports that are associated with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Branch displays to the reader that history is relative and that nobody can reach a historical truth. Thus, considering that such a reading is less trodden, this paper discusses how Branch's room of theories is an outlet to other different times: the conspirators’ time and Oswald’s biographical time, which makes the historigographic time in this novel seem more spatial.\u0000Keywords: Spatialization, historiographic time, Libra, Don DeLillo, present, and the room of theories.
