Compensation for the oscillatory components of the active and reactive powers of an unbalanced load requires the D-STATCOM to inject unbalanced three-phase currents to the power network. For this purpose, the compensator current references would contain an ac component on top of the dc value in the rotating-reference-frame. As a result, the closed-loop current control of the device would become different from that under balanced condition. In this paper, a state-feedback-based current controller is proposed and the engaged pulse width modulation is enhanced by dynamically modification of the switching duty ratios to tackle the dc-side voltage oscillations effects. The whole method, including the control technique and the modulation compensation, is simulated by using PSCAD/EMTDC software to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125704035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of one set of fixed capacitor bank and a voltage source inverter connected in parallel at the stator terminals of the generator. The inverter provides the necessary variable component of lagging reactive power to the induction generator so that nominal output voltage is obtained even at lower speeds and higher loads. The dc bus voltage of inverter is maintained using the combination of a bidirectional dc-dc converter and a battery. The battery is used as a complementary energy source to minimise the impact of the fluctuations in the wind power on the connected load. The scheme has reduced control complexity because the inverter is operated with a fixed PWM and hence the control is restricted mainly to switching the bi-directional dc-dc converter. There is no need for a position or a speed sensor. The complete system is modeled and simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Simulation results validate the proposed power generation scheme as a viable alternative for remote areas.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132302904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the existing generation, transmission and distribution systems are planed based on Centralized Generation with no considering of embedded generators, some adverse consequences and problems are initiated in power system control and protection. One major issue is the protection of generator against loss of main (LOM) or islanding conditions. A proficient diagnosis system should discriminate LOM from normal occurrences such as switching, load variations or other common faults and it should detect LOM very quickly. In this paper, embedded generations and consequent dilemmas in distribution systems are investigated and by categorizing the LOM diagnosis methods, a comparison and discussion are presented. Furthermore, a system comprising an embedded generation unit and a typical distribution network are simulated. Wide range possible occurrences are examined and several LOM detection criteria such as frequency, voltage and power variations of embedded generation unit in the distribution network are studied. A new method based on sequence Impedances of the possibly existing synchronous generator in the distribution network is developed that presents an improved diagnosis system performance. The MATLAB/SIMULINK based system simulation shows the validity of the proposed method.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123878009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the penetration of variable, non-dispatchable generators increases, power systems are becoming more sensitive to extreme weather events on the supply side as well as on the demand side. Sensitivity of supply to weather is mainly due to wind variability while demand sensitivity is driven by space heating or cooling loads. The interplay of these two weather-driven effects is of particular concern if demand spikes driven by low temperatures coincide with periods of low winds. The Republic of Ireland now has over 1.2 GW connected wind capacity, compared to a total dispatchable capacity of 6.3 GW, and a target of over 30% of electricity generation from wind by 2020. A further 0.3 GW of wind capacity is present in the interconnected Northern Ireland system. In December 2009 and January 2010 Ireland experienced a prolonged spell of unusually cold conditions. During much of this time, wind generation output was low due to low wind speeds. Figures for power demand, wind generation and wholesale electricity market prices during this event are presented as part of a case study of the effects of weather extremes on power systems with high penetrations of variable renewable generation. Despite the unusual meteorological conditions, generation capacity was found to be adequate to meet the demand peaks.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125222547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
