What has concerned Vietnamese educators and policymakers is the quality of these online teaching and learning activities. Blayone (2018), Cigdem and Ozturk (2016) as well as Wei and Chou (2020) shared the belief that the acceptance of students decided the success of online teaching and learning. However, only a little research has been done so far on Vietnamese students' acceptance of online learning. Therefore, this quantitative study focuses on determining factors influencing freshmen's acceptance of online learning at Hanoi University of Industry, thus identifying their acceptance level of online learning. Data was collected by a survey with the use of random sampling and the participation of language-majored students from the Hanoi University of Industry. The collected data was quantitatively processed with the employment of SPSS. The results indicate that freshmen’s acceptance of online learning is affected by four main factors, including performance expectancy, effort expectancy, attitude, and technological competencies. With respect to the research findings, several implications are suggested for effective online learning and teaching in Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121259239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, some linguists and educators do not support the use of L1 in teaching L2, whereas others emphasize the importance of L1 in L2 classes. Although studies have been done on both teachers’ and students’ attitudes toward L1 use in the L2 classroom, it still remains the question of when and how L1 can become an effective supporting tool for L2. The goal of this research is to present the results on the functionality of L1 (Vietnamese language) in L2 (EFL) classrooms under students’ perspectives. A survey questionnaire was designed to deliver to participants for the study: 126 students at the intermediate level of the General English program at Vietnam National University Hanoi, International School (VNU-IS). The study's findings indicated that the VNU-IS student participants were satisfied with their teacher’s use of L1. L1 usage was also discovered to be preferred for the following purposes: language functionality, managerial functionality, effective functionality, and social functionality. Among them, language functionality is most favored by VNU-IS students. The results also revealed that Vietnamese should be considered as a backup rather than a barrier for Vietnamese teachers.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116712952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A mixed-method approach was adopted with 120 EFL freshmen at Van Lang University (VLU) participating in an experimental study, followed by an interview for some of them. A mixed method of both quantitative and qualitative was employed to collect data. The result is that learning Speaking via the Google Meet platform and English texting can substantially enhance their English communication abilities. In addition,  texting in English and practicing with friends via the online-based app are effective ways to revise their English communication skills during the COVID pandemic with social distancing requirements.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126706272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the literature review, most studies have pointed out some factors contributing to student retention in online learning environments; however, few have focused on establishing a model that minimizes student dropout rates. Hence, this paper aims to formulate a predictive model to tackle this issue. Through the quantitative survey design and the PSL-SEM approach in data analysis, the research involved 100 students. After analyzing the data, it is suggested that some factors and their relationship with student retention. These were Academic locus of control, Flow experience, Satisfaction, and Learning strategies. Also, this study indicated that to improve the students’ retention in online learning, Student satisfaction should be paid more attention rather than the others.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125054567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Language researchers, educators, and professionals have investigated the preliminary impact of input that has been purposefully maneuvered to implement language instruction. It seems that effective language instruction has been explored from teachers' perspectives. However, learners’ perceptions of language learning seem to be under-researched. For this reason, this study aims at exploring EFL learners’ perceptions of corpus-aided instruction through qualitative research. Thirty-seven Chinese EFL college students at a Midwestern university in the United States participated in this study. Writing conferences and interviews were collected and analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings showed that the Chinese EFL learners felt corpus-aided instruction was helpful in terms of two things: (1) clarifying logic and (2) organizing the structure in academic writing. However, they also reported some challenges in corpus-aided instruction. This study offers new insight into the usefulness of corpus-aided instruction by drawing much-needed attention to EFL learners' L2 writing development and improvement. Based on the preliminary findings, suggestions and implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121734855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some students drop out of school owing to demotivation in class. Others struggle to find excitement or interest in their study. One of the most crucial things in keeping students inspired to learn while they are at school is the teacher. There is a lot of research that has studied the effects of teachers' enthusiasm on students' learning, especially learning motivation, but little has been done on EFL (English as a foreign language) students at university. This study aimed to investigate how EFL students feel in relation to their learning motivation when they learn with an enthusiastic teacher. The participants are 150 EFL students from a university in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. To collect and analyze the data needed for this investigation, the researchers used a quantitative method with a questionnaire employed as a measurement tool. The result has found that student’s positive perceptions exceptionally outweigh negative ones. The study concludes by making some recommendations for better motivating students and for future research.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"56 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114149439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to provide insights into the perceptions of EFL teachers and students toward translanguaging as a pedagogical approach through making a systematic review of the findings of five recent empirical studies. The analysis of those secondary sources shows that the majority of EFL teachers and students hold positive attitudes toward translanguaging activities in EMI classrooms. Additionally, most of the teachers reported a need for training on planning and deploying translanguaging practice in the EMI classroom setting. Future research focusing on strategic uses of translanguaging pedagogy and their explicit instructions for EFL teachers and students is recommended as a result of the findings’ interpretation.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125317594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The Effects of Reading Habits on Writing Performance: A Case Study at Van Lang University","authors":"Thi My Hang Nguyen","doi":"10.54855/ijte.22247","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54855/ijte.22247","url":null,"abstract":"Reading habits and writing performance reportedly share a close correlation; however, there has been less investigation on this aspect in Vietnam. The research aims to bridge the gap in the literature review with a description of Van Lang University English majors’ reading patterns, a report of their writing ability, and a conclusion on the relation between these two elements. Quantitative data were collected through an online questionnaire discovering students’ reading habits and a writing test administered to evaluate their writing performance. The test results were analyzed through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 26 (SPSS 26). Additionally, Pearson correlation and linear regression were applied to confirm the influences of five elements in reading habits on students’ writing performance. Qualitative data were obtained through a structured interview and then quantified with Microsoft Excel 2019. The interview was carried out to generalize the reading patterns of different purposive samples categorized by their writing marks. The result of the study asserts a positive correlation between students’ reading habits and their writing performance (robtained=0.433 to 0.542), and nearly 60% of the segments of the reading patterns were proved to have a great contribution to writing ability. The study indicates that a good reading habit entails improvement in writing achievement. The research suggests further investigation of factors influencing reading habits, the effects of teachers' instructions on students' writing performance, and the genres of essays that are most affected by reading patterns.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125265055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from the questionnaires completed by 120 English language teaching (ELT) students, the in-depth interviews with 10 student informants, 5 experts in English teaching, and 10 students who have taken the IETLS test to meet the ELOs. The findings showed that most student informants chose the IELTS test to meet the ELOs requirements and did some preparation for the test. Regarding the learning strategies, practicing English pronunciation and communication skills were used for speaking, listening to the audio, watching English videos for listening, reading the IELTS writing samples, and learning grammar for writing. To overcome problems faced by informants, some suggested solutions were proposed, such as employing self-study strategies, practicing the IELTS sample test, attending IELTS courses, sitting for the IELTS mocks, and finding support from lecturers.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126889707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This propels the use of a range of online learning and distance learning platforms massively, notably MS Teams, Zoom US, and Google Classroom. However, the fact that the aforementioned require a monetary subscription to unlock their full potential proves detrimental to the accessibility to education during the pandemic, i.e., not all students and/ or educational institutions have the available means. This paper thus seeks to affirm the capability of Discord as an alternative online learning platform that is not only efficient in its own right but also comes at no expense. To this end, a handful of English teachers who had been teaching online via either of the three platforms above were offered to switch to Discord for a fixed amount of time. They received instructions and support from the research team concerning the platform along the way and were asked to participate in a survey afterward. With the use of SPSS for statistical data analysis, the paper pointed out that Discord achieved a high compatibility level for both parties in use, namely the teachers and the students.","PeriodicalId":196814,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of TESOL & Education","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130128465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
