The strong academic theoretical background is perfectly complemented by the applied knowledge of the industry. Yet we see many collaborative projects that fail to deliver the intended results. We believe that long-term collaboration should be based on foundations that ensure its success. In this paper we aim at defining those foundations by reflecting on the successful collaborative research projects we achieved.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126375047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The company organizes a coding competition on which the best students from Macedonia participate. The competition quickly got the attention of university students and proved to be an arena where they show their knowledge. The involvement of the university staff in the competition directly and indirectly and the involvement of the company in the training process proved to be beneficial both for university and for company. The competition initiates skill improvement and this makes the Macedonian companies more competitive on the regional and European markets.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134645203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this common goal, both parties have different viewpoints on the most important research topics as well as the means, methods and necessary efforts to reach the goals. This talk will focus on the benefits of a close academia-industry collaboration. Following the history of TTTech Computertechnik AG, once founded as a spin-off company from Vienna University of Technology and now a research-driven high-tech enterprise, it highlights the commonalities and differences of university- vs. company-based research. Supported by practical examples, the talk also explores the different possibilities of collaborative funded research projects, and categorizes and aligns them with the product development lifecycle in industry. The conclusion features the lessons-learnt from 15 years of academia-industry collaboration and summarizes what practitioners can learn from academia and vice-versa.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114214163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A long-term cooperation between academia and industry is every important factor in obtaining success in industrial-relevant research, research validation in a full-scale industrial context, innovation and technology transfer. There are many examples of a long-term good cooperation that have led to many great research and innovation results. At the same time maintaining a continuous cooperation is very challenging due to organizational changes, or changes in business goral of a company, or inadequate motivations factor from academia site to keep long-term close relations.By long-term we mean a period of at least six months several years or several decades of years. The goal of the WISE workshop is to bring researchers and practitioners together to exchange experiences of cooperation between academia and industry, with emphasis on experiences and new ideas in achieving and maintaining a long-term cooperation. \u0000 \u0000This year WISE includes a session of papers from the International Workshop on TESTing Techniques & Experimentation Benchmarks for Event-Driven Software (TESTBEDS). TESTBEDS aims to increase the cross-fertilization of automated testing methods for the emerging popular event driven systems, which include Graphical User Interfaces, Web and Mobile applications, Network protocols among others. An event driven system is typically implemented as a collection of event handlers that respond to inputs (internal/external events) or other applications. This non-sequential nature of interaction creates a challenge for testing because the outcome of an event handler may depend on the state and on the sequence of preceding events and the potential event sequence space is enormous. TESTBEDS goal is to promote a discussion of how to diminish the effort in testing these systems, either by using automatic methods, or by using abstractions and promoting reusability, for instance, using test applications that work on different platforms or that reuse the same test strategy after a minor configuration process. Another aim of TESTBEDS is to encourage the development and sharing of benchmark applications and tools for evaluating new testing techniques. \u0000 \u0000We also encourage attendees to attend the keynote talk presentations. Academia-Industry Collaboration - Ways to a Strong and Beneficial Partnership, Christian Reinisch, TTTech, Austria \u0000 \u0000We hope that you will find this program interesting and thought-provoking and that the workshop will provide you with a valuable opportunity to share ideas with other researchers and practitioners from institutions around the world.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123445146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is following a post-positivist research philosophy grounded in critical thinking. The methodology is driven by practical problems, emphasis participatory research, and develops practically useful solutions in an iterative manner. Objective: Two objectives are to be achieved: (1) Understanding the state of the art with respect to action research usage in the software engineering literature, and (2) reflecting and providing recommendations of how to foster industry-academia collaboration through action research. Method:} Based on our experience with two action research studies in close collaboration with Ericsson lessons learned and guidelines are presented. Results: In both cases presented action research led to multiple refinements in the interventions implemented. Furthermore, the close collaboration and co-production with the industry was essential to identify and describe the required refinements to provide an in-depth understanding. In comparison with previous studies, we required multiple iterations while previous software engineering studies reported mostly one iteration, or were not explicit regarding the number of iterations studied. Conclusion: We conclude that action research is a powerful tool for industry-academia collaboration. The success of the method highly depends on the researchers and practitioners working in a team. Future studies need to improve the reporting with respect to describing the type of action research used, the iterations, the model of collaboration, and the rationales for changes in each iteration.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128044035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If not adressed upfront, they may hinder collaboration in such projects. We analyze our experiences from a 10 year industry--academia collaboration program, the EASE Industrial Excellence Center in Sweden, and identify issues and feasible practices to overcome the hurdles of different time horizons. Specifically, we identify issues related to contracts, goals, results, organization (in)stability, and work practices. We identify several areas where the time horizon is different, and conclude that mutual awareness of these differences and management commitment to the collaboration are the key means to overcome the differences. The launch of a mediating institute may also be part of the solution.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116332256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing automated model-based testing techniques, based on reverse engineering, generate test cases which can be executed directly on the software's GUI. We propose to augment the code coverage of these techniques, by exploiting information from patterns, defined at different levels (application design, state-based model, interaction with Android services), and generating additional test cases that may increase the coverage capability of GUI-Ripping based testing technique. The generation of the additional test cases is accomplished by defining an automatable procedure which exploits an existing GUI testing approach and a pattern based approach used in a different context.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125397755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to analyze projects and communicate about them, we have defined an \"architectural\" model for industry--academia collaboration, inspired by Kruchten's software architecture model. The model has four views of i) time, ii) space, iii) activity and iv) domain, corresponding to the questions: when, where, how and what. The +1 view is the scenario, binding the other four together. We illustrate the model by applying it to the Industrial Excellence Center EASE and the Sigrun Software Innovation and Engineering Institute. The model helps analyzing industry--academia collaboration projects, to find gaps and reduce redundant work.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121608389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the mostly adopted development technique in this context is the Model-In-the-Loop (MIL): In early stages of development, the MIL testing is used as a validation technique, supporting the execution of repeatable test sequences in a software simulation environment. In this paper we present a testing process aimed at automating the testing process in MIL of the Electronic Vehicle Information Center, an embedded system providing the digital control panel used for human-machine-interaction in cars. The process allows the automatic execution of test cases and the analysis of testing results, exploiting image processing and visual testing techniques. An example of using the process in a real industrial case study shows the suitability and the efficiency of the proposed testing automation approach.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116858681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Petersen, Emelie Engström","doi":"10.1145/2647648.2647650","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/2647648.2647650","url":null,"abstract":"Background: Experience and research indicates that there exist a communication gap between research and industry in software engineering. Objective: We propose the Software Engineering Research and Practice (SERP) taxonomy architecture to support communication between practitioners and researchers. The taxonomy architecture provides a basis for classifying research from a problem perspective which in turn supports the breaking down of complex practical challenges to researchable units. Thus such taxonomy may support the mapping of challenges in industry to research solutions in the software engineering context. Method: In this paper we present SERP and exemplifies its usage based on two literature studies in the field of software engineering. Further, we discuss how a taxonomy based on this architecture could have helped us in two past research projects that were conducted in close collaboration with industry. Finally we validate SERP by applying it to the area of software testing, developing SERP-test, and interviewing two industry practitioners and two researchers. Results: The taxonomy architecture has been applied to two problems in software testing, and has been assessed through interviews with practitioners and researchers. The interviews provided suggestions of how to improve the taxonomy architecture, which have been incorporated. With two examples, we demonstrated how the taxonomy architecture could be used to find solutions for industrial problems, and to find the problems addressed by a particular solution. Conclusion: SERP may be useful in multiple ways: (1) Given that SERP taxonomies are populated with industrial problems and scientific solutions, we could rapidly identify candidate research solutions for industrial practice. (2) Researchers could benefit from the taxonomy in the reporting of their research to ease the mapping to industrial challenges.","PeriodicalId":196566,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 international workshop on Long-term industrial collaboration on software engineering","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125861723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
