In this paper, we compare the performance of narrowband communications to ultra-wideband communications in a simplistic wireless sensor network model with a view to conserve energy. The comparison has been done under various channel conditions and we present some simulation results of these comparative studies in this paper.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117159285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Robot assisted surgery, bomb diffusion, space exploration and nuclear waste management are a few such applications where robots are used interactively and not merely as a dumb preprogrammed device doing repeated movements. In these applications, the robot does not replace the human operator but it complements the operatorpsilas skill and ensures his/ her safety. The users, in such cases, are specialists in their own fields like surgeons, chemists or mechanics but certainly not expert programmers or robotics engineers. Such users need a GUI that can accept input using scroll-bar and spin buttons and maneuver the end-effector as required. We describe here a GUI console we have developed for a pair of robots working with online instructions to position the end-effectors.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115806147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this paper is to design a control scheme for the electrical drive of a conventional auto rickshaw model to be driven by an electric actuator system, which is powered by an electric source. The source is a set of lead-acid batteries which are charged by solar photo voltaic panels. The control of the vehicle is obtained by the motor control system which comprises an armature voltage pulse width modulation (PWM) control. The PWM is in turn controlled by an ATmega8 micro-controller. Rheostatic braking is employed apart from the hydraulic brake system available. The parameters are continuously monitored and displayed using the instrumentation and display system. Critical parameters are monitored, and autonomous corrective actions are taken to ensure the safe operation of the vehicle.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131519604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Route discovery and route maintenance are also the most concern areas in MANET. Many efficient routing protocols have been developed for MANETs over the past few years. They have been analyzed under the CBR traffic. This paper evaluates the energy consumption of two on-demand routing protocols: dynamic source routing (DSR) and ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) under the stochastic traffic (Pareto traffic) in comparison to constant bit rate (CBR) traffic. Energy consumption mainly due to mobility pattern, traffic pattern, area shape, sending rate and number of nodes are evaluated with the help of ns-2 simulator. The simulation results demonstrate the energy consumption behavior of DSR and AODV under different traffic models.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131663577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As any other burning process, the control scenario is to expect the controller to regulate the temperature and the period of baking a fixed quantity of raw material as desired, as well as to have the concentration of the combustion gases under control. To achieve these goals, this work presents a strategy which includes multivariable online identification of the kiln process and a constrained generalized predictive controller. An MLP neural network model derived from real plant data of Saveh cement factory in Iran is used as the kiln process simulator. The control efforts are made taken into account the operating constraints. At last the proposed control strategy is modified so as to gain good disturbance rejection ability.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"199 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127624424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the major reason behind this is the provision for differential detection which allows production of low complexity mobile units. In this paper, we present analytical expressions for bit error rate (BER) of pi/4-DQPSK modulation with L-branch selection combining (SC) diversity in Nakagami-m fading channels perturbed by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). The derived end expressions are in closed form and contain finite series of Gaussian hypergeometric function. This makes evaluation of error rates much straightforward compared to earlier approaches that required single or, even double numerical integration. Some special instances such as the non-diversity case and Rayleigh fading case are also investigated and plotted alongwith the main findings. The results are however limited to integer values of fading severity parameter m.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127953392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The variation in soft handoff coverage area can be taken as the parameter influencing the performance parameters of the CDMA cellular system. In this paper, an analytical model is developed and analyzed for the concerned target cell in CDMA cellular network. The model proposed in this paper is for Bi-class services mainly integrated data and voice. It is based on priority reservation for handoff voice and data calls along with call queuing scheme for handoff data calls. Upper channel limits are set for new voice as well as data calls to give priority to handoff calls. Two dimensional Markov birth-death process is used for modeling the problem. The data handoff queue capacity is considered as function of soft handoff coverage area which depends on the two soft handoff threshold parameters T_ADD and T_DROP. Variation in these threshold parameters is stated in term of variation in handoff data call queue capacity. The performance parameters of the model mainly new voice and data call blocking probabilities and handoff voice and data dropping probabilities are analyzed for variation in upper channel limit for new voice call and handoff data call queue capacity.","PeriodicalId":196254,"journal":{"name":"2008 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127730117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
