While graphic user interfaces can make music creation more understandable and approachable, they pose access barriers to blind and visually impaired people who operate computers with keyboards and use assistive technologies like screen readers. I believe that vision ability should not be a prerequisite to expressive music creation with technology. In my dissertation, I intend to address the accessibility barriers prevalent in music technology design across three phases of research: First, an interview study conducted in 2020 with experienced blind and visually impaired music makers depicts the the current state of accessibility and workflows within commercially available tools [18]. Second, findings from that study led to the ongoing development of a browser-based music notation tool SoundCells. A technical paper describing its design along with the results and recommendations gathered from co-design and testing with 7 blind musicians will be presented at Web4All, 2022. Finally, I propose forming an electronic music ensemble with blind and visually impaired music makers who will collectively write and perform original music using SoundCells and other technologies. Much of this research is carried out in partnership with students and teachers at the Filomen M. D'Agostino Greenberg (FMDG) School [9], a community music school that teaches blind and visually impaired musicians of all ages and skill levels.","PeriodicalId":195975,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th International Web for All Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129555511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reports qualitative research with 30 expert educators in academia and the workplace to consider the relationship between these sectors in building accessibility capacity. Their insights highlight important disconnects and contextual challenges that educators must manage and navigate. Digital accessibility is increasingly recognised as a shared endeavour in the workplace. However, in academia, faculty cultures and disciplinary silos can result in responsibility for accessibility defaulting to individuals. To prepare accessibility-skilled professionals, cross-role education and training is necessary across disciplines. With a focus on teaching and training practices, we highlight the need for academia and the workplace to learn from each other and adapt together to generate pedagogies that will better prepare learners for accessibility practice.","PeriodicalId":195975,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th International Web for All Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123785110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we describe the experiences of a group of runners whose practices are rarely profiled: individuals who identify as legally-blind, some of whom run competitively, while others run for purposes of leisure. We specifically focus on planning strategies undertaken, experiences running both with and without sighted guides, the impact of situational and environmental factors, and the ways in which technology is utilized. The study has revealed a set of insights which if capitalized upon could offer considerable promise to support independent running. These include examining ways to reduce levels of uncertainty faced by runners, supporting autonomy, providing greater levels of environmental awareness, and aiding socialization when running. Findings from the work offer promise to interface designers to improve inclusiveness when developing technologies to support runners.","PeriodicalId":195975,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th International Web for All Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131286614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tasks which were once conducted in-person, are now being performed online. While this may result in efficiencies for those with strong technical know-how, challenges can be faced by different groups of users, including older adults, particularly those with limited or no experience with online conferencing tools. This can lead to difficulties performing tasks which others take for granted (e.g., communicating with others and attending medical appointments remotely). Concerns still remain regarding the usability of these tools, and the security and privacy of data when performing tasks. We conducted a set of interviews to understand older adults' (aged 60 and above) experiences transitioning to online conferencing tools during the pandemic, and identify their perspectives for future usage of these tools. We found that the process of adapting to these tools varied among participants. Older adults interviewed described coming together to form a community of practice to troubleshoot usability issues. They also described valuing trust within a solution highly when adopting newer technologies. Finally, effective communication and social interaction through these tools was found to be prioritized over higher-level privacy concerns, especially during the earlier stages of adoption. Implications arising from findings can inform the designers of online communication solutions who may overlook the needs of this community who now rely on these tools to support daily living tasks.","PeriodicalId":195975,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 19th International Web for All Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125581096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
