Despite the fact that the use of interalar distance, interpupillary distance, as well as distance between the medialis angles of the eyes are considered, to some extent, a reliable guide for determining the size of the maxillary anterior teeth, the literature on dentistry does not recommend one crucial method. This study is the second part of a series of research papers focusing mainly on the determination of maxillary anterior teeth width for a completely edentulous patient. The aim of the series is to suggest a new methodology for determining the maxillary anterior teeth mesiodistal width, based on certain stable guides that were derived from dentate casts with angle class I arch relationship and normal teeth alignment. These guides include basically the AB (the distance measured from the mesio-incisal angles of the maxillary central incisors along the midline and perpendicular to the intercanine (IC) line) mean distance obtained from the first study, the midline of the palate, and the arch form. (2050) Safa’a A. Asal E.D.J. Vol. 63, No. 2 IC line is 9.88±0.90, 10.55±0.93, and 7.73±0.63 mm for ovoid, tapering and square arch forms respectively with significant differences between the distances and its corresponding arch forms13. Based on the fact that the loss of jaw bone after extraction reduces the size of the middle and lower thirds of the face, which is already reduced by aging as documented in the literature14-19, the Grave et al study reported that the mean distance from the labial surface of maxillary incisors to the posterior border of incisive papilla for the group with artificial teeth is significantly smaller than that for the group with natural teeth20. Hence, the author prefers to define the AB distance at 10 mm, 9 mm, 7 mm for tapering, ovoid and square arch forms respectively.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"55 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86788164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study included CBCT images of patients at a Korean dental college hospital. All endodontically-treated mandibular first molars having a separate DL root, were investigated. The presence of periapical lesions in the distobuccal (DB) and DL root, as well as the presence and quality of canal filling, were assessed. The differences in the quality of the root canal filling between the DL root and the DB root were analyzed using a Fisher’s exact test. Multivariate logistic regression analysis separately identified the factors affecting untreated canal and adequately-filled canal of the DL root. A total of 215 mandibular first molars having a separate DL root, were found to be treated endodontically. The incidence of an untreated canal in the DL root was 28.8%, whereas only 39.5% of the DL canals had an adequate canal filling. The incidence of untreated canals was significantly higher in the DL root than in the DB root (p <0.001). The right side was significantly associated with the presence of untreated DL canal. Adequately-filled DL canal was also associated with tooth position, and was not associated with gender, age, or the presence of a periapical lesion. The canal of DL root of the mandibular first molar was more untreated and not adequately filled, as compared to the DB canal, especially in the right side tooth.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"2020 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87833212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plastic surgeons and orthodontists perform repetitive surgical interventions for restoring speech, feeding, facial esthetics, development of the skeleton from infancy to adulthood. Unfortunately, the wound contraction and scar tissue formation have resulted in development disturbances involving tissue components such as tissue cells, blood vessels and bone. These scars lead to regional ischemia and hypoxia. Difficult airway may develop during recurrent surgical interventions. In spite of the fact that there are some monitoring tools for tissue reorganization such as laser Doppler flowmetry, tissue reflectance spectrophotometry and near-infrared spectroscopy, the golden standart is the clinical examination of the surgeon. Preoperative evaulation includes detailed anamnese for earliar operations, nutritional status, coexisting anomalies/sydromes requiring specialized aneshetic technic and collaboration with surgical team. Sedating children before transfering to operating theatre is essential. Gentle endotracheal intubation and fixating the tube should be performed in guidence of the surgical team taking care of the vulnerable tissue. Anesthesia related airway emergencies are more common in syndromic patients especially after palatoplasty. Preparation for difficult airway is needed. Anesthesia team should pay attention for monitoring of awareness and pain perception. BIS monitoring would help for preventing overuse of anesthetic drugs. Planning an effective postoperative analgesia and extubation without giving harm to the surgical site help for success. It would be better if anesthetic considerations are made patient-based because each time we have to manage a growing child undergoing different type of surgical procedure.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"70 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87288288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prevalence of MSD among dental practitioners in UAE is not well documented. The present study aimed on studying the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among different dental specialists in the UAE, and correlating the region of pain with the type of clinical work done by the specialists. Materials and Methods: A sample of more than 100 dentists was chosen randomly from different emirates in UAE. An interview questionnaire was administered regarding the number of years of experience and the presence, region, duration, and type of musculoskeletal pain they experienced. Results: Musculoskeletal pain is experienced by 67% of participants, 83.3% of them were periodontists, 80% were conservative dentists, 77.8% were endodontists, 72.7% were orthodontists, 70% were oral surgeons, 63.6% were prosthodontists, 63% were general dental practitioners, and 50% of pedodontists. The results have also indicated that the region of experienced musculoskeletal pain does vary according to the specialty. From those dentists who experienced work-related musculoskeletal pain, 80% of conservative dentists experience pain in neck and shoulders, 66.7% of periodontists and 54.5% of orthodontists experienced pain in the lower back region. More than 50% of endodontists experienced pain in the neck and shoulders regions, and 39% of general dental practitioners who experience pain in the neck region. Conclusion: Preventive measures need to be taken to decrease the risk of dentists and dental specialists developing work-related musculoskeletal pain.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87976023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The questionnaire was structured to collect information regarding demographic and clinical characteristics, risk habits (tobacco and alcohol consumption) and oral health habits, and to allow an assessment of knowledge about oral cancer, related risk factors and early signs. Results: The study cohort included people with different ethnicities, and there were significant differences in clinical characteristics between Italians and other Europeans. The subjects showed a good knowledge about oral cancer and related risk factors (with correct answers provided to >50% of the questions) but insufficient knowledge about the early signs of oral carcinoma (correct-answer rates of 16–42%). There were high rates of habits that are potentially harmful to oral health, such as smoking (43.8%) and alcohol consumption (57%). The daily habit of brushing teeth was present in 92.6% of the subjects, but they had a low propensity to undergo regular dental examinations. The percentage of subjects with pathologies of the oral cavity was 18.6%. Conclusions: Despite the smallness of the sample, this pilot project could facilitate the acquisition of valid and cost-effective data for the primary prevention of oral cancer through information and educational campaigns on the related risk factors.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"111 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73109219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to determine whether denture treatment improved oral discomfort accompanying dry and sticky sensations. Methods: Forty-eight partial and/or complete denture wearers complaining of oral discomfort were recruited from non-xerogenic patients with normal salivary flow after obtaining informed consent. Measurement outcomes were: 1) subjective symptoms evaluated by self-administered questionnaire, including five questions on oral discomfort; 2) objective symptoms such as congestion and erosion of the tongue, erosion and congestion of the palate, and angular stomatitis evaluated by one dentist; and 3) unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates. Outcomes were evaluated before and after denture treatment. Mean differences in outcomes between before and after denture treatment were analyzed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test, then multiple regression analysis was applied to determine predictive variables associated with each score. Results: All outcomes were improved by denture treatment. Both unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates were significantly increased (p=0.042, p=0.014). Multiple regression analysis revealed that new denture fabrication improved stimulated salivary flow much more than only adjustment of the existing denture, and stimulated salivary flow significantly reduced objective symptoms (p=0.020), and sensations of dryness (p=0.010), pain or burning in the mouth (p=0.029). Conclusions: The results suggest that denture treatment improves salivary flow and reduces oral discomfort.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"41 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85413880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: 50 teeth were collected, 25 teeth from patients have progressive periodontitis, and 25 teeth from healthy patients. Measurements of probing depth and clinical attachment loss were taken prior to extractions. After the horizontal fracturing process of root specimens, healthy and diseased cementum layers of roots were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X ray analysis (DXA). SEM and DXA. The collected data were statistically evaluated using t-test. The level of significance was set at p<0.001. Results: The results of this study showed a significant decrease in the calcium and phosphate contents along the entire cementum of root teeth of the progressive periodontitis and a significant increase in the magnesium and sulphur of the same root teeth in comparison to the control group. In addition, there were remarkable destructions of root cementum, crack lines and deep cavities reaching to the underlying dentin. Conclusion: In conclusion, the alteration in cementum structures and composition due to progressive periodontitis might have an important implication on periodontal therapy. The influence of alteration of cementum composition and structure on periodontal regeneration warrants further exploration.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"81 1","pages":"337-346"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78228482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: 78 students of preclinical course divided into two groups of control and intervention. The control group (n=42) was educated at first and by traditional method. Following the control group, intervention group (n=36) received instruction via the Facebook as an adjunct. Students in the intervention group were acquainted with a page in Facebook posting educational topics for instruction of tooth preparation. After finishing of tooth preparation period, students of two groups participated in tooth preparation test. The quality of tooth preparation was scored according to a checklist with maximum total score of 20; and compared between the two groups of intervention and control. Statistical analysis done by three strategies included Intention to Treat (ITT), Per Protocol and Per Treatment. Regression analysis was performed to assess the presence of statistical association between the intervention received and the student scores (p<0.05). Results: Base on ITT analysis, the mean score of tooth preparation acquired by students was 17.81 ± 1.60 in the intervention and 16.76 ± 1.79 in the control group. The mean score of students in the intervention group was significantly higher than that of control subjects (p=0.009). Conclusions: It can be concluded that education by Facebook as an adjunct to traditional instruction can significantly improve the student scores. Sex had no significant effect on the effectiveness of this intervention. 44% students became the members of Facebook.","PeriodicalId":19556,"journal":{"name":"Oral health and dental management","volume":"9 1","pages":"304-308"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87896458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
