The factors driving criminal activity have received much attention, and voluminous literature has related the incidence of changing weather changes to criminal activity. However, weather variables can affect the environment and human behaviour differently. For example, past scholars found that homicidal crime has a connection with the weather change. However, although studies look at the relationship between crime and weather change, the source of the data is debatable. In addition, empirical studies showing the relationship between property crime and weather change are challenging to obtain because none can be found. Therefore, this paper aims to identify the pattern of criminal activity based on weather changes to address this situation. In this paper, the research methodology uses quantitative data. The crime data were gathered from the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), and the weather data was gathered from Meteorological Department for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Johor from 2011 to 2020. The data were analysed using SPSS statistical and illustrated in the bar graph method to identify the pattern and relationship between crime and weather. This study found that non-aggressive and property crime is less influenced by the high temperature but influenced by the ambient temperature and humidity. Future research on the relationship between crime and weather towards the quality of life of people must be theoretically grounded and use measures of crime and weather that are justified by the quality-of-life index theory.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115502801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transparent concrete is concrete that has light-transmitting properties which transmit light through the optical fibre. Optical fibres are reinforced in the conventional concrete mixture from one face to another face, which allows direct light to transmit through it. Daylighting factor is one of the fundamental qualities of the energy efficiency of a building. The thermal performance is also crucial to providing comfort to the building occupants. The literature studies cover the light transmittance and thermal performance of transparent concrete. Selected literature studies are reviewed based on the related topic, Asian countries, and countries with a similar climate to Malaysia. This research applies quantitative method where it was focus on experimental study to transparent concrete. The overall result indicates improvement on light transmission and thermal performance as the plastic optical fibre increased compared to conventional concrete. The total average outdoor surface temperature of transparent concrete shows a difference of 0.989°C lower than conventional concrete. The total average temperature different between conventional concrete and transparent concrete (560 optical fibre) are 0.9°C. This experiment's significant contribution is that using more plastic fibre optic reduces thermal conductivity and heat gain while allowing for greater daylighting. Finally, transparent concrete shows effectiveness on light transmission and thermal resistance where it can contribute to building industry on green building and sustainable design. However, the further studies on thermal performance with longer duration is required to analyses the thermal heat loss.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114537472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has contributed to a number of mangrove rehabilitation programs. However, ensuring the long-term efficiency of the conservation programs needs the involvement of the local community. Therefore, this paper aims to understand the local community mangrove conservation behaviour guided by the psychological factor that influences people’s behaviour. This research is carried out by adopting qualitative techniques through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) which involved local communities from Kg. Tg. Keramat, Kuala Selangor. Results showed that the local community nearby the mangrove forest has a positive intention and attitude towards mangrove conservation based on the five themes assigned through the FGD. The five main themes are perception, intention, attitude, perceived behavioural control, and personal norm. Among the local community, perceived behavioural control has the most positive effects on mangrove conservation. However, because of the lack of conservation activities involving the local community, there were no community empowerment and enforcement from the top management upon receiving activity reports which significantly changed their intention towards mangrove conservation. From the result, it can be concluded that people that live nearby the mangrove forest will have a positive attitude and intention towards conservation as it will affect their living and surrounding. However, these positive intentions need full support from the higher authority to ensure a long-term resilient program and sustainable management of mangrove conservation.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126233453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to understand the mental health effects of the pandemic, explore the role of urban parks on human health, and propose future research directions. We conducted a literature review on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the effects of urban parks on human health and well-being. Using five screening criteria, we selected 32 articles published in the Scopus, Mendeley, and Google Scholar databases for analysis. We chose a systematic literature review as the methodology because it allowed the identification of literature relevant to the research questions. We conducted a systematic study based on the characteristics of the selected articles and the operationalization of variables, reported the results, and made recommendations. The results indicated that people went to parks to relieve stress caused by the pandemic, although some were deterred because they perceived risk in visiting public parks and green spaces. Others focused more on the Internet while in green spaces than on taking advantage of park activities Demands for safety, accessibility for all, and interesting environments will force urban parks to change. There were insufficient practical studies offering novel design ideas and examining the health impacts of small, regional urban parks during the pandemic.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129591506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to the modern building design that is seen as contextually isolated from the place identity of the urban historic district, the architectural identity of heritage shophouses is seen as successful in fitting into the place identity due to its significantly responsive architectural identity to contextual factors. This paper aims to systematically review the influential factors on the Malaysian heritage shophouse design which constitutes its architectural identity through content analysis. This paper extracts scholars’ studies on heritage shophouse architectural design features, heritage shophouse morpho-typologies, and the factors that influence its architectural identity development. Heritage shophouses in Malaysia are morphologically categorized into Early Heritage Shophouse styles, Eclectic Heritage Shophouses, and Non-Cultural Heritage Shophouse styles. Regardless of their architectural styles, all heritage shophouses are characterized by the façade articulation, the interior design including the spatial organization system, and the building construction materials. Every element is primarily influenced by the tropical topographical climates and material sources as a basic architectural adaptation, the building development standards set by the colonial regimes, cultural assimilation, and the advancement of building construction and materials. The findings of this study can help architects how to prioritize design considerations in developing their new architectural intervention design ideas in the urban historic district to preserve its valuable historical characteristics.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125167162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Studies on lightweight concrete as a suitable building material for structures on the water have been conducted. Therefore, this article focuses on the addition of untreated timber husk to lightweight concrete (foamed concrete) to diversify and sustainably produce construction materials. This study was designed to examine the durability and buoyancy of untreated timber husk as an addition to foamed concrete as a building material for floating architecture through an experimental approach fixed with numerical analyses on the specification and qualities of lightweight. The results of the quantitative method demonstrated that it was possible to build floating timber-foamed concrete using samples that range in density from 437.5 to 993.3 kg/m³. Each model's compressive strength was measured over a range of curing times, with TH05 producing the highest readings of 2.27 MPa and 0.89 MPa after submerging in seawater. The impact rate from saltwater towards the strength was highest at TH10 with only a 0.25 MPa difference, and the surface of each concrete showed the most reaction on TH15, which was also used to analyse the buoyancy of samples over time. To determine the effects of seawater overtime on the density and strength of timber-foamed concrete, further analysis of seawater’s influence shall be conducted to enhance the materiality of floating architecture.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129876152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A higher rate of NRW reflects higher revenue loss to the state. The NRW cannot be totally avoided, thus understanding, and managing its components is very vital. Of late, research on NRW particularly on University Campuses is still an emerging field. Hence, this paper delineates the overview of NRW, a sustainable University Campus, and the benefits of NRW in the University Campus’ sustainability. To do so, an extensive literature review via three main databases (ie., Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus) was conducted. From the review, six (6) aspects of NRW (ie., NRW prediction or estimation, the water distribution network, digital tools, NRW management, driver of water losses, and costeffectiveness of NRW) were discussed in the previous study. While, four (4) categories (i.e., water quality, customer complaints, water resources, and impact on service efficiency and financial management) are listed as benefits of NRW through the NRW reduction program in the sustainability of the University Campus. As a result, this paper is able to provide insight to University Stakeholders for the consideration of NRW in managing water management for sustainable campus development.","PeriodicalId":194704,"journal":{"name":"Malaysian Journal of Sustainable Environment","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132799281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
