Key features are a shape analysis algorithm that efficiently determines shapes in the handwritten word, a linear segmentation algorithm that optimally matches characters identified in the handwritten word to characters of candidate words, and a learning algorithm that adds, adjusts, or replaces character templates to adapt to the user writing style. In tests, the system was trained on four samples of each character of the alphabet. One writer wrote these samples in isolation. Using a lexicon with 10,000 words, the system achieved for four additional writers an average recognition rate of 81.3% for top choice and 91.7% for the top three choices. The average response time of the system was 1.2 seconds per handwritten word on a Sun SPARC 10 (42 mips).","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131921600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the traditional color histogram is modified to capture the spatial layout information of each color, and three types of spatial color histograms are introduced: annular, angular and hybrid color histograms. Experiments show that, with a proper trade-off between the granularity in the color and spatial dimensions, these histograms outperform both the traditional color histogram and some existing histogram refinements such as the color coherent vector.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131742241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is achieved by introducing a type of hybrid rules, called neurules, which integrate neurocomputing into the symbolic framework of production rules. Neurules are produced by converting existing symbolic rules. Each neurule is considered as an adaline unit, where weights are considered as significance factors. Each significance factor represents the significance of the associated condition in drawing the conclusion. A rule is fired when the corresponding adaline output becomes active. This significantly reduces the size of the rule base and, due to a number of heuristics used in the inference process, increases inference efficiency.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133005484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is based on the concept of active fusion for image recognition and is composed of two major types of intelligent agents: radiologist agents and patient representative agents. A patient representative agent takes images from the patient through a Web-based interface, asks for multiple opinions from radiologist agents in interpreting them, and then integrates the opinions for the user. A radiologist agent decomposes the image interpretation task into smaller subtasks, uses multiple agents to solve the subtasks, and combines the solutions to the subtasks intelligently to solve the image interpretation problem.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129288171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents new results on a methodology of using the structures and hyperlinks of HTML documents to improve the effectiveness of retrieving HTML documents. This methodology partitions the occurrences of terms in a document collection into classes according to the tags in which a particular term appears (such as Title, H1-H6, and Anchor). The rationale is that terms appearing in different structures of a document may have different significance in identifying the document. The weighting schemes of traditional information retrieval were extended to include class importance values. We implemented a genetic algorithm to determine a \"best so far\" class importance factor combination. Our experiments indicate that using this technique the retrieval effectiveness can be improved by 39.6% or higher.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"203 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127322663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, planning formalisms can be enriched by taking resource constraints and probabilistic information into account. The mixed integer programming (MIP) paradigm from operations research provides a natural tool for solving optimization problems that combine such numeric and non-numeric information. The MIP approach relies heavily on linear program relaxations and branch-and-bound search. This is in contrast with depth-first or iterative deepening strategies generally used in AI. We provide a detailed characterization of the structure of the underlying search spaces as explored by these search strategies. Our analysis indicates that the traditional approach of identifying dominating search strategies for a given problem domain is inadequate. We show that much can be gained from combining search strategies for solving hard MIP problems, thereby leveraging the strength of different search strategies regarding both the combinatorial and numeric components of the problem.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121970505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional trial and error methods are inefficient. This paper presents a neurofuzzy approach for fitting hearing aid parameters. A neural network is designed to generate the initial target and fuzzy logic is used in fine-tuning the initial target. The introduction of the neurofuzzy approach is expected to accelerate the fitting process. It may also enable audiologists to incorporate their knowledge into the system and make it fit specific needs.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130678981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selected objects of interest in a video sequence are described and stored in a database. This database forms the object layer. On top of this layer, we define the schema layer that is used to capture the structured abstractions of the objects stored in the object layer. We propose two abstract languages on the basis of description logics: one for describing the contents of these layers and the other, which is more expressive, for making queries. The query language provides possibilities for navigation of the schema through forward and backward traversal of links, sub-setting of attributes and constraints on links.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129147904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, for a long time, it has been considered that to efficiently reduce the search space, the best choice is the limited local consistency achieved by forward checking. However, more recently, it has been shown that maintaining arc consistency (which is a more pruningful local consistency) during searching outperforms forward checking on hard and large constraint networks. In this paper, we show that maintaining a local consistency which is stronger than arc consistency during searching can be advantageous. According to a comparison of local consistencies that are more pruningful than the arc consistency which can be used on large CNs, max-restricted path consistency (Max-RPC) is one of the most promising local consistencies. We propose a new local consistency, called Max-RPCEn (Max-RPC Enhanced), that is stronger than Max-RPC and that has almost the same CPU time requirements.","PeriodicalId":194023,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 11th International Conference on Tools with Artificial Intelligence","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129589337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
