Clinical examinations were conducted using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination index, which assesses the severity of ETW in six sextants of the oral cavity. The risk factors for ETW included: (1) socio-demographic characteristics, (2) general health conditions, (3) vitamin C consumption, (4) beverage consumption, (5) acidic foods and drinks, (6) dairy products, (7) use of fluoridated mouthwashes and toothpastes, and (8) type of toothbrush. A one-way ANOVA test and an independent sample t-test were used; a p-value of 0.05 was considered the threshold for statistical significance. A total of 312 participants were included; 174 (55.8%) were females. In terms of age distribution, the majority of participants were between 23 and 59 years old (n = 261). Regarding education, predominantly (154, 49.4%) held a bachelor's degree. Regarding socioeconomic factors, 214 participants (68.6%) were framed into the lowest socioeconomic status (SES). The highest prevalence of ETW was observed in the maxillary anterior teeth (90.2%), followed by the mandibular anterior teeth (79.8%). Participants who used hard-bristled toothbrushes (teeth abrasion), consumed acidic products, and belonged to high SES groups had significantly higher erosive tooth wear scores. The overall prevalence of ETW among participants was 69%, with the highest prevalence observed in males, older age groups, and those with higher SES. The findings highlight the significant role of dietary habits, oral hygiene practices, and socioeconomic factors in the development of ETW.</p>","PeriodicalId":19390,"journal":{"name":"Odontology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147841006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients (17 males and 43 females) with anterior disc displacement with reduction confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The patients were split into two equal groups at random based on the type of treatment that was used. Group 1: arthrocentesis plus PL, Group 2 arthrocentesis plus HA. The pain intensity, clicking sound, maximum inter-incisal opening (MIO) and range of lateral mandibular excursions were measured. All the measured parameters were statistically analyzed. After 6 months, both groups demonstrated a significant improvement in all the parameters that were measured. The PL Group showed a statistically better resolution of clicking compared to HA Group with an Absolute Risk Difference of 33.3% (P < 0.05). The MIO between-group difference was 4.867 mm (P < 0.001), so exceeding the Minimum Clinically Important Difference (MCID). On the other hand, although the PL Group demonstrated statistical superiority in pain scores and range of lateral mandibular excursions (P < 0.05), the clinical magnitude of the between-group difference was modest. PL appears to be a safe and effective adjunctive intra-articular therapy after arthrocentesis for the management of patients with anterior disc displacement with reduction. It provides a clinical advantage over HA in resolving joint clicking and improving MIO. For pain reduction and range of lateral mandibular excursions, the therapeutic benefits of PL and HA are clinically comparable. Seventy-two discs were prepared from a flowable and a conventional resin composite (n = 36 each). Specimens were immersed in 5.25% NaOCl, 17% EDTA, or sequential NaOCl + EDTA. Surface roughness (R<sub>a</sub>) was measured before and after irrigation with a contact profilometer; nano-topography was quantified on 45 µm × 45 µm areas using AFM. Data were analyzed with mixed-model repeated measures ANOVA and paired t-tests (α = 0.05). Profilometry revealed a significant R<sub>a</sub> increase only in the flowable resin composite after NaOCl + EDTA (p = 0.009); no significant changes were detected in the conventional resin composite for any irrigant. AFM showed consistently higher nano-roughness in the conventional resin composite than in the flowable resin composite for all solutions (p < 0.001). NaOCl and NaOCl + EDTA significantly reduced AFM R<sub>a</sub> in the flowable resin composite, whereas EDTA significantly decreased R<sub>a</sub> in the conventional resin composite. Irrigation-induced surface changes are material- and method-dependent. Eighty-eight bovine incisors were randomly assigned to four groups: NC - negative control; PE - 10% propolis extract; SF - 2% sodium fluoride; PE + SF - 10% propolis extract + 2% NaF. Bleaching was performed in three sessions at 7-day intervals, followed by the experimental treatments. Surface roughness was assessed by optical profilometry, microhardness by Knoop testing, ultrastructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical composition by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and color change by CIE Lab* spectrophotometry. Statistical analyses included intragroup comparisons (baseline vs. post-treatment), which were performed using the paired t-test for dependent samples, and intergroup comparisons, which were conducted using one-way ANOVA for independent samples (p ≤ 0.05)\". Surface roughness showed no significant intra- or intergroup differences. KHN decreased only in the PE group, with no differences among the other groups. SEM revealed smooth and homogeneous surfaces in all groups, while EDS showed variations of less than 2% in Ca, O, and P in all groups. All groups exhibited color change, with no statistically significant differences between them. The 10% propolis extract, alone or in combination with NaF, did not affect surface roughness, enamel ultrastructure, or chemical composition of HP35-bleached dental enamel and did not compromise bleaching efficacy. However, visual identification of plaque can be difficult, especially around brackets, ligatures and wires. The purpose of the present randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a plaque disclosing agent (PDA) as a visual guide for biofilm removal. Thirty-two systematically and periodontally healthy adults with fixed orthodontic appliances and Plaque Index (PI) >  = 25% were enrolled from October 2020 to May 2022, the subjects were equally randomized into test and control group. Primary outcome was the change in the difference in percentage of residual plaque area (RPA) between the two study groups. In the test group, a PDA was applied before professional oral hygiene, whilst the control group received a hygiene session without disclosing. The PDA was then re-applied at the end of the treatment in both groups, and the RPA was assessed via Image-J software analysis of standardized frontal photos and compared between groups. The average RPA in the test group was 3.9% (CI 95% 2.6%; 5.1%), which resulted significantly lower than in the control group, where it reached 12.0% (CI 95% 8.0%-16.0%) (p-value < 0.001). The percentage of area with residual plaque was modelled using a beta-regression model. In vitro, human dentin samples were exposed at 5 mm or 20 mm to a miniaturized mono channel Helium-jet plasma device for times varying from 15 to 180 s. Contact angle measurements were performed on dentin surfaces, before observations under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Shear bond strength (SBS) tests were carried out on composite resins until the restoration was separated from the tooth. The results showed that CAP exposure reduced the contact angle as early as 30 s of plasma exposure at 20 mm (21.44 ± 3.99°, p < 0.001) or 15 s at 5 mm (21.04 ± 4.36°, p < 0.001). SEM observations revealed widely opened tubules on CAP-exposed surface. SBS tests revealed a significant influence of CAP application on the adhesion of composite resin to the dentin. The control group showed one of the lowest SBS values (14.48 ± 4.7 MPa) whereas the CAP-treated groups at 5 mm exhibited a progressive increase in bond strength, particularly for the 15 s (20.88 ± 5.10 MPa, p < 0.05) and 30 s conditions (24.49 ± 7.26 MPa, p < 0.001), before a new reduction above 60 s of exposition (19.96 ± 4.97 MPa). Finally, this study highlights the benefits of applying plasma jet at atmospheric pressure on human dentin to enhance the adhesion of restorative composite resins. The application of cold atmospheric plasma may act as a secondary etching procedure to provide an optimal cleaning of dentin and then enhance the interconnection between resin, collagen fibers and dentin tubules.</p>","PeriodicalId":19390,"journal":{"name":"Odontology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2026-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147717501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Restoring enamel and dentin represents a major challenge in restorative dentistry due to their complex hierarchical architecture and limited intrinsic repair capacity. Conventional restorative materials can restore function but often fail to reproduce the mechanical, aesthetic, and biological properties of natural tissues and are prone to long-term degradation and secondary caries. Recent advances, including cell-free mineralization systems, self-assembling peptides, and nanostructured scaffolds, aim to mimic the structural and chemical environment of developing dental tissues, offering potential for non-invasive, biologically integrated, and durable restorations. This review highlights current progress in elucidating mineralization mechanisms, recent innovations in biomimetic strategies, and evidence from experimental and translational studies on enamel and dentin regeneration. Particular attention is given to emerging materials such as self-assembling peptides, calcium-phosphate based systems, and natural biomolecules including keratin and polyphenols. Two different single-shade flowable bulk-fill composite resins (Charisma Bulk Flow One-CH and Omnichroma Flow Bulk-OM), and a high-strength restorative composite (G-aenial Universal Injectable-INJ) were used in this study. Cylinder-shaped samples were prepared at three different thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 mm) from each test material (n = 3). Samples were scanned utilising a micro-CT device, and internal voids of the materials were evaluated. Data were analyzed with Jamovi v2.7.6 and Mi nitab v14. Robust ANOVA was applied when normality was not met for the interaction between material and thickness. Multiple comparisons were analyzed with Holm-corrected robust t-test. Generalized linear models were used when normal distribution was met. Multiple comparisons were employed with Tukey test. Significance level was set as p < 0.05. Material*thickness interaction did not significantly affect total porosity percentages of the tested groups (p > 0.05), whereas it influenced total number of voids significantly (p < 0.001). Regardless of different thicknesses, the composite resin's median total porosity and the number of total void values from the lowest to the highest total porosity percentages were as follows: INJ < OM < CH. The total number of voids increased as the thickness increased for the bulk-fill composite resins.
