The approach is based in a multi-port equivalent of the system which makes possible to assess the effect of each wind farm limit on the stability boundary, the approach indicates the distance to the limit activation and the effect of each load in such a limit. The wind farm control schemes includes voltage control and it is represented as a constant current at its limit. A criteria to select the critical bus bar, based on the generator transformation coefficients, is presented. This methodology is tested in a platform that produces synthesized PMU measurements from time-domain simulations and critical boundary for the wind-farm limits are shown. The methodology is also tested for synchronous machines and its parallel structure is exploited when implemented in a High Performance Computing environment. A computational time under 2ms shows that the method is suitable for real-time applications.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117191578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is difficult for the control to mitigate the voltage variation on a long distribution line because of the loss on the distribution line. This paper proposes an advanced reactive power control, in which the power factor of the PV system is adjusted both by output power of the PV system and by apparent power of loads not to minimize the voltage variation at the interconnection point but to minimize the voltage variation over the whole distribution line, and reports the result examined by numerical analysis about mitigating the voltage variation by applying the control. This paper shows that the proposed control can mitigate the voltage variation more than constant power factor control and there is a probability that it will be applied as a measure of suppressing the voltage variation on the long distribution line.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"16 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123580912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper aims to investigate how different levels of Demand Response (DR) participation can facilitate the integration of PV. In order to get robust conclusion, fractal-based generic distribution network model is used to generate many statistically similar networks. Subsequently, a Particle Swarm Optimization approach to model the optimal demand pattern for various levels of DR participation is investigated in the study. The results suggest that DR can significantly improve self (local) consumption of PV output. As a result, network losses decrease and the voltage rise effect at high PV penetration can be alleviated.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"326 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124300611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this, they have set ambitious emissions reduction goals. Thus, in this paper, a novel strategic planning methodology is used in order to determine the most appropriate power system for Europe by the year 2050. The planning methodology jointly optimizes generation and transmission expansion alternatives considering renewable energy, energy storage and demand-side management, in order to minimize total costs. Technical and environmental aspects are considered by optimization model constraints. In this work, demand-side management is seen as an option to test the power system design under the assumption that a certain percentage of the load can be shifted. Moreover, sensitivity analyses are performed in order to evaluate the impact of different investment costs of storage technologies. Results show how different flexible demand levels, as well as different investment costs of storage technologies, technically and economically affects the future European power system.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125213319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The procedure is based on the accuracy of the disturbance start-time detection and the frequency's rate of change. An algorithm for estimating the disturbance start time (DST) is proposed and validated using measured frequency transients. The rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) calculation is carried out using a linear-regression-based method. The procedure is applied in the analysis of an equivalent of the Mexican power system, assuming three wind energy penetration scenarios affected by different disturbances.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125411844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the peculiarities of the DSSE is the lack of adequate real-time measurements. Thus, in this paper a three-phase DSSE algorithm enhanced with an advanced approach for modeling pseudomeasurements is proposed. The major innovation of the proposed methodology is the development of a DSSE algorithm based on limited real-time measurements. The proposed DSSE algorithm takes into account the unbalanced nature of the distribution systems and the presence of virtual measurements. The pseudomeasurements are obtained from historical data, through a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) methodology, improved by the Calinski & Harabasz (CH) criterion and the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. The performance of the proposed methodology is illustrated on the IEEE 13 node test feeder and compared with the case where the pseudomeasurements are modeled through a normal distribution.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125442962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power from weather-dependent renewable sources like wind and solar are particularly subject to variability and forecasting error. In this study we propose an innovative framework for analyzing the renewable generators at a given location and constructing energy portfolios that minimize the variability and forecasting error of the overall power output. The framework's key innovations are (1) its ease of automated implementation and (2) its ability to work even without any geographical diversity. We have implemented this framework for wind turbines and solar photovoltaics, and successfully executed it for a location in eastern USA. The results from this experiment have been quite promising and they demonstrate that both renewable power forecasting error and variability can be reduced by 40% with our framework.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126267109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC) systems based on wide-area measurements can be exploited to address the inter-area oscillation problem. This work develops a modular software architecture for a prototype WAMPAC control system. A Compact Reconfigurable Input Output (cRIO) controller from National Instruments is used to implement the real-time prototype. This paper presents the design process followed for the development of the software architecture. The design method followed a three step process of design proposal, refinement and attempted implementation. Results from each iteration are used to improve the next. The goals of the design, the challenges faced and the refinements necessary are presented. The details of the final implementation in LabVIEW are also documented.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126268756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The operation strategy for non-utility facility is determined by solving a daily generation scheduling problem under a price-taking scheme. Numerical simulations are performed under various scenarios. It is shown that the optimal strategy is complex when either fuel supply is limited or electric utility allows buy-back option for non-utility facility. The impacts of price and load variations on the complexity of solutions are investigated. The sizing of battery storage device is also examined.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125752104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional synchronous plant, the traditional provider of services which ensure frequency stability - synchronising torque, synchronous inertia and governor response - are being displaced by marginally zero cost non-synchronous renewables. Such a trend has operational security implications, as systems - particularly synchronously isolated systems - may be subject to higher rates of change of frequency and more extreme frequency nadirs/zeniths following a system disturbance. This paper proposes UCED-based strategies to address potential shortfalls in synchronous inertia associated with high non-synchronous penetrations. The effectiveness of the day-ahead strategies is assessed by weighing the cost of the schedules against the risk level incurred (the initial rate of change of frequency following a generation-load imbalance), and the level of wind curtailment engendered.","PeriodicalId":193448,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130237243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
