The process is reliant on contextual features that support perceptions of shared information, and usually occurs within a complex structure of medical practice shaped by a wide range of factors, including local work patterns, organizational contexts, and patients' circumstances that vary across settings. Consequently, designing computational systems to support contextual knowledge sharing among clinicians working across boundaries remains a challenge. In particular, very few mechanisms exist for representing the notion of practice for computational design. This paper presents an approach for formalising and representing medical practice for cross-boundary knowledge sharing in healthcare. The approach is based on the practice theoretic paradigm, and draws upon a view of context as an interaction problem, representing practice as a context parameter for the design of cross-boundary collaborative healthcare systems.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. In this way, a large amount of data from patients can be hosted on a large-scale distributed system. Unfortunately, the security of such systems is usually inadequate, which results in the hindrance of the EHR systems adoption in practice. Attribute-based systems have been a popular choice that could provide a flexible and reliable access control to EHR databases, which are usually managed by a single authority, who is responsible for setting up the system's policy. In a large-scale distributed system, it might be necessary to have multiple authorities, who can handle users located in different areas. Nevertheless, one of the challenges is how to enable multiple authorities with a single access policy. In this paper, we provide a sound solution to this issue. Our EHR system provides a secure environment for EHR users to use the system conveniently and provide the flexibility and scalability.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in the field of health-related public services. Among the technological devices and media enabling users' access to such services, the emerging smart TV platform represents a promising and valid means of interaction. In many countries, where population ageing is becoming the leading welfare concern, information and communication technologies are expected to play a basic role in alleviating the pressure on public healthcare services. In this scenario, the paper discusses the feasibility of an e-health service delivered through the smart TV, by the design and implementation of a prototype application that enables the remote consultation of personal medical reports. Users can access their personal health records, and visualise the outcomes of medical examinations performed at a specific laboratory by interacting with the smart TV through its remote controller.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. In this paper, an improved ECG data compression method using ASCII character encoding is proposed. A QRS detection algorithm firstly applied to separate QRS and non-QRS region. Then, the QRS regions of ECG signal are compressed using lossless method and non-QRS regions are compressed using lossy method, which improves the compression ratio and minimise the reconstruction error between original and reconstructed ECG signal. All tested ECG records are selected from the PTB database. Statistical results show that the compression performance of the proposed method is better than both lossless and lossy ECG data compression technique. The average compression ratio (CR) and percent root mean square difference (PRD) obtained using proposed ECG data compression method are 27.40 and 4.753 respectively, which is better than other existing ECG data compression method.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. It is well known that surface electromyogram signals easily acquired from surface of skin of the body using non-invasive electrodes are composed with variety of noises. Hence methods to remove noise become most significant for surface electromyogram (sEMG) signal before performing processing and analysis. In this study, wavelet analysis has been used to analyse quality of effectiveness of surface electromyogram signal. The surface electromyogram signals were estimated with the following steps: first, the obtained signal was decomposed using wavelet transform; then, decomposed coefficients were analysed by threshold methods. Daubechies wavelets (db2-db14) family for efficiently removing noise from the recorded surface electromyogram signals has been used. However, the most essential wavelet for surface electromyogram denoising is chosen by calculating the root mean square value and signal power values from different voluntary contraction motions. The combined results of root mean square value and signal power shows that wavelet db4 performs denoising best among the wavelets. Furthermore, the statistical technique of analysis of variance (ANOVA) for experimental and best wavelet coefficient was analysed to investigate the effect of muscle-force relationship for ensuring class separability.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. Although the subject has been widely researched and published in dental literature, the topic of best way to restore endodontically treated teeth still remains an area prone to anecdotal decision-making. Inappropriate management of such teeth can cause adverse clinical consequences and significant inconvenience to the patient as well as financial implications both for the patient and provider. To address this problem, we have developed a clinical decision support and training system based on expert knowledge and evidence-based guidelines that provides case-specific recommendations, alerts and treatment prognosis. This method presentation article provides design and implementation details of the system that can be leveraged by students and less-experienced clinicians at point-of-care to enhance decision-making and improve treatment outcomes for endodontically treated teeth.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. Early breast cancer detection, is important as it can increase the rate of diagnosis, cure and survival of the affected women. Medical imaging techniques can detect early signs of breast cancer. They are also used to diagnose, stage breast cancer and guide treatments. This article explains the imaging procedure, analysis of images, benefits and limitations of standard medical imaging techniques such as mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and thermography. Also some of modern imaging techniques are discussed here. Comparative study of mammography, ultrasound, thermography and magnetic resonance imaging describes the benefits of thermography in early detection of breast cancer. CAD provides a fast, reliable, and cost-effective second opinion to support doctors with the diagnostic management of breast cancer. This article reviews various CAD algorithms developed and studied for mammography, ultrasound and thermography. From the literature review, it is observed that accuracy of detection of breast abnormalities using CAD are decided by many factors, such as size of database, image quality, segmentation of region of interest, extracted features and classifiers used, etc.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. The symbolic analysis calculations were performed on pre-meditation and meditation RR interval series. This analysis decomposes the series into patterns lasting three-consecutive time points (length-3 symbol sequences) and classifies them into four pattern families based on variability. Differences in these pattern families showed that sympathetic activation is increased during meditation state, while parasympathetic activation predominantly decreased, irrespective of the type of meditation. The entropies derived from the histograms of length-3 symbol sequences show that in both the meditation methods the complex dynamics of the RR interval series is lowered during meditation.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. High levels of control activities may excite unmodelled dynamics of a system. The objective is to reach a trade-off between tracking performance and parametric uncertainty. Two methods are proposed to synchronise general forms of van der Pol (VDP) model and their performance. These methods use the radial basis function (RBF)-based neural controllers for this purpose. The first method uses a standard RBF neural controller. Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm is used to derive and optimise RBF controller parameters. In the second method, an error integral term is added to the equations of RBF neural network. The coefficients of error integral component and parameters of RBF neural network are also derived and optimised via PSO algorithm. Simulation results show the effectiveness and superiority of proposed methods in both performances in comparison with the adaptive controller.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J.
